Harvey played DE for the Gators, but will play OLB in the 3-4 in the NFL. His 40 time wasn't that good, but he has great on field speed, is a playmaker, and did real well in the LB drills. He doesn't have the raw talent Gholtson has, but he has a major motor, and just seems to be one of those guys who finds a way to make a play. Don't forget everyone complained about Harris speed, and that is why he fell to the 2nd round. Think they will be a force together.
So then why would he run LB drills at the combine and at his Pro Day? Oh and on your original post in this thread...DeMarcus Ware wasn't worth the 11th pick in '05 and was considered by many fans to be both a reach and a workout warrior...you're pigeonholing the crap out of these prospects. Mario Williams wasn't worth the #1 pick...I remember Kevin Williams at 9 was knocked by some...Seymour at 6 was somewhat of a reach, many had pigeonholed the Pats into picking a WR...I could keep going if you want. QFT...fans tend to get stuck on a few select guys and focus on them because they are told THESE are the guys who are top 10 talents and thats set in stone and anyone else would be crazy and all the other crap. I like the Igor comparison alot actually. He's one of the best 3-4 DEs in the league, but he plays on a D with Castillo, Merriman, Jamal Williams, and Cromartie so he flies completely under the radar. Both he and Balmer rely more on power, leverage, and more power. Neither can be described as explosive or extremely athletic, but those guys are highly valuable to a 3-4 team. Disagree completely. Out of the 3, Mendenhall has the best blend of power, speed, size, and intelligence. It's not like there are a ton of 225 RBs with 4.4 speed and quick feet lying around. What he lacks is a track record, but I actually kind of like this in RB prospects. Less wear and tear at a position that takes an absolute pounding in the NFL. I wouldn't touch any of the WRs in this draft at 6...I like Devin Thomas but he'll get overdrafted...the best value at the WR position will be guys like Nelson, Marcus Monk, Cameron Colvin, Leggett, Purify, and so on. I agree on Merling, though I think that if he would have worked things would change significantly.
Great post DWare and I agree completely. It seems like at least half of the guys on here are saying Gholston, McFadden, Long, or bust, but we really can't think that way. There is a VERY real possibility that all of those guys are gone and that we can't trade out. Honestly, I'd still be happy with any of the guys you mentioned as well as possibly one of the corners (although less so with them). Albert too, as he would offer much needed depth and great versatility to our O-line as well as some pre-existing chemistry with Brick on the line. We can't as fans pigeonhole ourselves based on who so-called "draftnicks" say are the players worth our choice. In this draft there's a very level playing field after the top few guys and we can't be dissatisfied with who our FO chooses. They haven't steered us wrong yet with their top picks and I don't expect them to this year either.
It's weird too cause JUST LAST YEAR we saw just how crazy the draft can be... Revis went to us in alot of mocks, just it was at 25 and not 14. Like two days before the draft it basically became...if you want Darrell Revis you better pick him before the Steelers do at 15. David Harris rose so much after he ran a 4.5 at his workouts last offseason... If you hone your target on a few guys and say "if we don't get him we're done" you end up with a DRob situation...trade up...give up a ton of picks and dough...
Exactly. It's one thing to hone in on a specific position of need (say, if we were going for OLB at #6 and were going for Long, Gholston, Groves, or Harvey there), but as fans honing in on one player and saying if we don't get them the draft's a failure is ridiculous at best. Some people just need to understand that it's not like the Jets have the power to do whatever they want on draft day. The draft will play out as it does and although yes, we may prefer certain players, we need to let our FO do the dirty work and trust them to do what's best. They have a better feel of how things are falling into place than anyone and again they haven't led us wrong yet in the draft, so just sit back and enjoy.
I posted this already in the Draft-section, but there?s one sentence in it, that just needs to be in this threadl. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20.../2008/04/14/lombardi.mocks/index.html?eref=T1
Sorry German Jets Fan, just seen your reply, my bad. My feeling is that anytime anyone has surgery to the heart its never quite the same, let alone in a super fit footballer. Good luck to him though.
Ware, you really know your stuff. Just wanted to let you know that I'm enjoying reading your detailed posts as we approach the draft.
