It blows my mind that some people can be such strong supporters of an assistant coach who has not once in his career proved that he has what it takes to produce a top tier offence.

Nice post.

Add in Sanchez only looks at 1/3 of the field and has no idea what is going on the rest of the field. He telegraphs all his passes.

He can only complete passes when he is not rushed and his WR's are wide open. Hence his success in play action and 2 minute drills. Sanchez is particularly effective inside the 5 yard line where play action and his ability to call run plays has set him up for a ton of easy play action TDs. Some nice calls this year inside the 5 yard line this year. The Jets have used Sanchez's athleticism very effectively.

I hate to call someone stupid. But he does not appear very bright. He has little to no clue whats going on during a ply. He gets confused way to easily. For 4 years we have constantly heard from him and the CS that now he gets it. He suddenly now understands defense and the playbook. Now we can expand the offense. Now he can call protection, now he can call audibles. But notice every time he said these things they have to take away that responsibility because its to much for him. They immediately took away his ability to audible and call pass protection. They constantly have to simplify the playbook for him. He is just not very bright. Which explains why he has such a problem making prepsnap reads. Why he panics and folds into a ball when confused or rushed. The game simply is to fast for him. If it slows down in a 2 min drill or play action where everything is simplified then he is ok.

In regards to the empty backfields they are actually good playcalls and Sanchez's QB rating in 5 receiver sets proves it. The purpose of the empty backfield is it simplifies the read for Sanchez so he should know exactly where to go pre-snap Shotty uses 1-3 step drops out of the empty backfield lowering risk of a sack. Generally the only time Sanchez is in trouble with a 5 man backfield is if he guesses wrong pre-snap and gets confused and panics, But that happens every play when he is confused. The empty backfield just simplifies the situation for him.

Remember Sanchez is a turnover waiting to happen. Leave him confused orrushed and he panics and is a turnover waiting to happen. The Jets offense is built around one philosophy protect against Sanchez beating the team. That is the first and foremost concern on every play. Reduce the risk of him panicing and breaking down and giving another game away. It is why we run so many max protects and 1-3 step drops.

Shotty has actually done an amazing job with a horrible QB. Sanchez is terible, the NFL has not seen a QB this soft or scared in the pocket in many many years. That Shotty has been able to hide his limitations and still have some offensive success speaks wonders about Shotty.

Valid criticism of Shotty is his failure to teach and develop Sanchez. While Sanchez is a better QB this year than last year defenses are doing a much better job of confusing him and taking away his slants and TE middle passes.

Did you follow the Jets that year and watch the games, or are you only going by a stat line?

There were big differences in the two years. First of all Chad was relatively healthy in 06, but had an ankle sprain for most of the year in 07. His general fragility was more of an issue in 07 due to the ruinous and one has to assume on the FO decision to attempt to replace Kendall with Clarke and Bender. Vilma, arguably the best player on D, also went down mid season.

And "perhaps". Really?

Ftr Chad had seasons before Schotty's arriva when his int percentage was higher.

Finally, you do recall who the Jets' #2 receiver was back then, right? Justin McCariens. Heh.

That is not how I see my position here. which is a relative one, relative to many who scapegoat Schotty for ALL the problems on O. I do not strongly support him. I just don't let lies about him pass here unchallenged.

It is NOT TRUE that Schotty held Chad back.

It is NOT TRUE that the Jet O had no success with Favre.

It is NOT TRUE that Sanchez's painfully obvious poor execution should be laid primarily on Schotty.

And it is NOT TRUE that all that needs to happen to improve the O is to change Schotty out for any swinging dick as the next Jet OC.

we won't agree on greene so i will drop it

keller finished 6th in yardage,9th in receptions and 12th in td among all te's
i'd say that is well above middle of the pack.for the end of the first round i will take that kind of production from any draft pick

conner plays specials and does well lead blocking.we dump off enough without having to utilize the fb in the passing game

there was absolutely no chance powell was going to get any pt over tomlinson.hell schotty would have kept lt out there every play if it was up to him

again slauson is fine.he improved over last year and is a productive 6th round pick.you can't have probowlers on evey position on the line.if he would have been the weak link in the line this year we would be playing houston this weekend

Sure I watched the games. In fact, the main reason I'm convinced Schotty needs to go is that during the games I attended in those years, I was so down on Pennington that I was specifically looking for how he was being defended. Sure enough, you had corners squatting on the short routes and safeties playing up in the box and not being challenged deep resulting in a high-risk short passing game. Strikingly similar to what we're seeing now.

At the time, I chalked it up to Penny's limitations, but "perhaps" (am I supposed to apologize for using that word?) I was wrong.

I acknowledge the differences, but my point is that despite the differences the results were nearly identical. That's pretty much the Schotty critique. Doesn't seem to matter who's playing QB, he will turn the ball over.

And ftr, Chad has had exactly ONE season before and after Schotty with a comparable INT ratio.

so we were in complete rebuilding mode but the 1-15 team that pennington went to two years later wasnt?

at that time, balitmore stopped everyones run game. that doesnt change the fact that greg camarillo was chads #1 reciever and he still put up far better number than he did here

What the fuck does my handle have to do with anything?

You can feel free to click on my username and read my history. When I bother to post more than two or three lines I'm usually citing statistics, as I often have when it comes to shotty.

So, just for fun, lets break down Sanchez's interceptions from last week and see who needs a reality check:

fast forward to 20 sec in

int 1. Pause at 24 sec. Notice how two guys are blocking one Dolphins lineman right near the RB (while Slauson wanders around back toward sanchez aimlessly)? Somehow the both of them couldn't manage to not let the dolphin lineman jump. On top of that Dbrick's man is on top of Sanchez when Sanchez makes the throw.

Was it a bad decision? Sure. Was it all on Sanchez? No. If that was meant to be a screen, it was horribly executed by the line. If it was meant to be anything else, then it was a cluserfuck.

1:30: Sanchez int number 2. D'Brick gets beat, Sanchez tries to throw the ball away. He's hit as he throws, the ball comes out wrong, hits the back of an offensive lineman and the dolphins lineman intercepts it.

Is it all Sanchez's fault? He could eat the sack, but then people would complain that he's taking too many bad sacks. Plus given the game situation he doesn't want to get backed up since they're driving for a tying field goal.

2:10 Sanchez int #3. Shonn Greene stumbles on his route, recovers, and Mark made a bad throw behind him. Maybe Mark didn't think Greene would recover so well, or maybe he was expecting Greene to sit down in one of shotty's "Zones". Of all the picks, this one was probably the one that most of the blame can be put on Sanchez.

So in reality, most fans watching that game come away saying "OMG SANCHEZ IS TRASH, ITS ALL HIS FAULT!" but two of the three ints weren't just Sanchez mistakes.

Overall, I think Sanchez is a middle of the road QB, who has a high ceiling and a low floor. His problems are fixable (bad decision making based on game situations, being fumble prone, and accuracy on short throws) but it's troubling that he's still got them in year 3. I don't think he is 'elite' but I don't think he's the biggest problem with the offense either.

Oh and:

In 2006 Chad was 1.5% below his career average in completion percentage, had 17 tds and 16 ints. In fact, it was his worst season in his whole career for interceptions.

Penningtons TD to int Ratio under Shotty was almost an abysmal 1 to 1. 27 tds, 25 ints under Shotty.

The rest of his career he had 73 tds to 39 ints. Nearly a 2 to 1 ratio.

Shotty is total garbage. He ruins QBs. The Bottom line on Pennington and Shotty is this:

Brian Schottenheimer had Chad Pennignton in 2006 and 2007. Chad Pennington is the most accurate Quarterback in NFL history.

Brian Schottenheimer's system turned the most accurate Quarterback in NFL history into a run of the mill Quarterback with a 1 to 1 TD to int Ratio.

I don't get it either. Makes no fucking sense, why people praise this guy who has done absolutely fucking nothing his whole "career". The guy SUCKS, he can't deliver anything. If he worked for Pizza Hut people's pizzas would end up at Papa John's

You probably thought Sanchez 2011 season was good because he had 30 touchdowns.

On paper the numbers looked modest but watching the jets in 06 with worse talent. They didn't look nowhere as bad as we did this year. Pennington and his 17 td's>>>Sanchez in 2011 with his 30 td's

On Keller say what you want the guy was a reach pick.

Gronkowski 2nd round
Gates UDFA
Graham 3rd round
Whitten 3rd round
Finley 3rd round
Lewis 28th pick
Clark 24th pick

One demensional TE who are not overly productive at the position don't belong in the 1st round while moving up to boot.

A few things on here.

I made this post because people keep suggesting that Mark will be a better QB with another OC. That’s not true. The only thing that is going to make mark a better QB is Mark. And he has soooo many issues that calling them “fixable” is a huge stretch. The only thing he has going for him is athleticism. He needs to ride the bench for a year and learn from the sidelines - at the very least. IMO continuing to let him start is “bad for his development”.

Pennington? Suddenly Pennington’s broken down final years are important? We were not a good team in 06. We had an easy schedule and we won the easy games. Chad had just come back from a surgery that should have ended his career. Chad had limitations that could have been a nightmare for an OC. But he did have smarts. And that’s how he survived and that’s what the OC played up too. No OC was going to make our offense great that season. And all Sanchez has to offer is athleticism. That’s not a definable trait to play up too. Especially after 3 years!

Favre – well Favre screwed us for his own ego. He hid his injury and always knew this was just a one year stop over on his way to where he wanted to be. All he cared about was getting starts and making foolish throws at the end of the game in attempts to get on Sports Center. I dare say he was glad when we missed the playoffs – because he was hurt and wanted the season to end and wanted to leave NY. It had nothing to do with the OC. Favre used us like a tampon.

I think it was better than Sanchez 2010. Good will be when he gets to a 60% completion percentage, and at least a 2:1 turnover ratio along with 20-30 tds. I think he needs to get rid of shotty do it. If shotty dragged Pennington down, I see no way for Mark to climb out, as he has no where near Pennington's accuracy.

Chad's "broken down final years?" His Miami '08 year was anything but "broken down."

The reason these two get brought up is that they both had career years after struggling in Schotty's offense, which is kind of becoming a pattern here. Can't just disregard Scotty's first 3 years on the job.
