I agree that the Jets are evaluating all of the scenarios. If there's one thing that we've seen from Bowles and Mac is that they're thorough. The increased snaps for Petty could be just to see if they want to keep him on the active roster and thus keep 4 QBs, or it could be that they want to see what he can do with increased reps/opportunities. Then if he does well with those opportunities, they may decide to open up the competition between Geno and he for the #2 spot. They may have already decided that and that's why Petty's getting more reps. They know they're going to have some tough roster decisions to make, and I expect them to do a lot of experimenting over the next 2 weeks to help them decide who they're gonna keep.
If the Jets are hoping to trade Smith and get some value for him on the last year of his contract, it would make sense for them to have their contacts who are talking heads put out messages like this. I doubt they get anything for him, but if you want to try you have to sell the impression that he's a valuable player.
Thanks for posting this. I wrote the previous response to The Dark Knight before I saw your post. I hope that he's right and the Jets will keep 4 QBs. I look at that as a positive and not a negative. I think that both Petty and Hack have a lot of potential. I think that Geno is a LOT better than most posters here. If nothing else, I think he will be a very good backup this season, and if Fitz is injured, Geno could help save the season. Whether Fitz and Geno will be good enough to be re-signed following the season remains to be seen. I think that all those who think this team can make the playoffs or at least can compete for them should be very glad we will have both.
don't laugh....all Geno has to do is fill in for Fitz 3-4 games, play well, and that's exactly what he'll get.
Dak Prescott looked very good. He was available in round four but we just had to pick Hackenberg in round two. Hope the front office knows something we don't.
When fans write: "Petty was up against scrubs so he should have killed them" should keep in mind Petty was paying with his own scrubs. He didn't have starters blocking for him or running routs. This is what got Sanchez killed...playing with scrubs who 1) couldn't block, and 2) didn't mind hitting a QB late. It's probably harder playing with scrubs then with 1's.
I'd LOVE Geno to finally click, same with Petty and Hack. Having multiple high level QBs is a good problem to have.
Geno should be the best back-up QB in the NFL. He has 2 years starting experience. Still young, and at least should be entering the prime of his career. Is he? I am not sure. Nice of Casserly to say though.
I liked Prescott as a prospect coming into the draft. I saw him a lot at MSU. But lets not crown the guy just yet. It's one silly preseason game, whoopdie do
Just based off your comment above, I'm not quite sure you realize the potential in that of Hackenberg. Thankfully, our coaching staff and front office does. First and foremost Prescott is 23 years old when compared to Hackenberg who's only 21 years of age (give Hackenberg a good two years of NFL developing and let's see how good he looks during a preseason game at 23 years of age). Also, you just can't teach Hackenberg's combo of a cannon arm to go along with ideal size for the position at 6'4/230. You can coach up, develop & mold but you can not "teach" this kids overall makings. Let's not forget when talking up Prescott as a prospect over Hackenberg, that coming out of H.S Hackenberg was ranked as the Nation's #1 Pro-Style quarterback by ESPN & the #2 rated quarterback heading into college by Rivals.com. Ended up selecting Penn State because of their coaching staff (at the time) and turned down offers from Alabama, Florida Gators, Virginia, Tennessee & South Carolina (a 5 star recruit across the board). Had a QB Rating of 134.0 after his true Freshman season with Penn State and was projected as the Nation's #1 college QB prospect heading into only his sophomore season with PSU. Some fans are lacking an understanding of what type of high-end prospect we have in a pro-style, strong armed type of kid in Hackenberg with great/ideal NFL size for the position. Just because a 23 year old Prescott had a nice showing during a preseason game doesn't mean this fan base should question the drafting of a 21 year old Hackenberg of the 2nd round...
I'd like to see Petty get a shot with the second string in this upcoming preseason game. We already know what Geno is, there's nothing to lose here. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
I have nightmares that some jet fans will still be talking about Hackenberg being the no.1 high school prospect when he's a 3 year NFL vet. In the year 2020, Hack throws 5 interceptions against the Detroit Lions on sunday and monday morning we have to hear how he was as a high school prospect. Yikes. For God's sake that doesn't matter anymore
