No, I would not have been happy. Fitz did great in 2015 and I don't have faith in the other 3 to lead the team at the moment. The hope is Petty or Hack will eventually do it. How fast? We don't know. Geno I am hoping can improve, but I have not seen it yet.
Geno will get a 1st team start during this preseason. I just hope Petty gets 2nd string time even when Geno doesn't start. There is only one way to find out who can play, and that is get on the field with the most talented players on 1st string and go. Petty may flourish at the speed of the game with the 1's. We know Geno hasn't up till now. Waiting years for future development won't tell the coaches anything. Brandon Marshall, Decker, and company may help Petty, and prove to the coaches he can go. Working with the 2nd/3rd string won't.
I love coming on here listening to all the scouts on here. How come you great scouts are on here and not having scouting jobs?
He makes a valid point. We're not even worthy of discussing our favorite team and the upcoming season. How dare we come to a Jets message board to analyze the play on the field as we see fit? Smh Jets fans.
I absolutely love having two quarterbacks (under contract) to develop over the years in Petty (about the same age as Geno) and Hackenberg (who's much younger than both). But I believe this thread has ran it's course regarding this specific topic of discussion. There is no competition between Geno and Petty for the #2 spot. At least this offseason there's not. Coach Todd Bowles resolved this rumor after Saturday's practice. Stating how Geno owns and holds the #2 backup position. Bowles made it clear while mentioning how "Fitzpatrick's the starter, Geno's the backup, Petty is #3 & Hackenberg's 4th". It's as simple as that. Geno has as good a chance of passing Fitzpatrick (without injury) as Petty does replacing Geno (without an injury to Smith). Geno will be on this roster during his contract year come opening day and if anything happens to Fitzpatrick it'll be Geno as the first QB up that'll be given the opportunity to start with this offense. Nobody else gets that crack before Geno. I feel we'll keep all 4. Who knows what'll happen this year between Fitz & Geno. Who knows if any one of Fitzpatrick or Geno even returns next offseason. But it won't be until next offseason where Petty will have a chance to lock up the backup spot or possibly start as a 3rd year prospect with two years of developing from the outside looking in. He's definitely a keeper.
All Bowles said was the truth. At the moment it's 1. Fitz 2. Geno 3. Petty 4. Hack. Like I said before in the thread, there is nothing else for him to say publicly right now. All of a sudden Petty was getting more reps today at practice. Not a coincidence. Don't kid yourself. They are definitely evaluating all of the scenarios that we are in this thread.
As long as TB is here I believe he'll never say anything other than that, whether there's any QB competitions, for any spot, or not. I believe that is meant strictly for the media so to avoid any talk or distractions of a QB controversy in the media. I don't think this has run it's course. I think it's just starting. Also, I don't think there is any chance whatsoever that Geno will wrest the job from Fitz. And one more thing: I may not be a scout, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night
My thoughts are Petty is the odd man out if they don't keep 4 QB's. But if I'm wrong I'm wrong. I just don't see the point in keep talking and saying the same things over and over. I keep hearing how the Jets FO don't have any confidence in Geno. If that true why didn't they just sign RG3 or whoever and cut Geno?
Personally I don't think Geno's issue is intelligence, but confidence. Watch his feet when he's standing in the pocket. He's competing with himself as well as the opposing defense. I think his mental clock is still too fast, he's thinking too much and not letting it just come to him. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
So it's okay to use that excuse for Petty but as soon as I use that for Geno it's no longer an acceptable excuse. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
Because of the younger QB we drafted and the plan to dreft another this year swayed us away from picking up a injury ridden QB that noone is sure if he can play at a high level again
They should just keep Hack inactive TBH... i don't see the point in him suiting up on sundays if we know for sure he won't play. Practice Squad him and keep the other 3 active.
You can't just "practice squad" a player. You have to cut them and wait for them to clear waivers before offering them a spot on your practice squad. Any team could sign them once you cut them.
Maybe someone has posted it but this morning Charley Casserly was on NFL Network and he said its not even a competition at all. Most TV guys I dismiss but Casserly hired McCagnan and Bowles so if anyone knows the thinking in Florham Park, its him. I'll summarize: Casserly said its not a competition whatsoever, the Jets will keep 4 QBs. They need to play Petty a lot in the preseason though because they need to find out what kind of player he is now before the offseason when Smith and Fitzpatrick are FAs. [Makes sense to me.] He was also pretty high on Geno Smith saying that Jets fans need to get off his back. Too much hate in his mind for a backup QB now with the team who Casserly believes he was in the wrong system before and now that he knows this system well with a year under his belt he's "one of the best backup QBs in the league." He said that Jets fans need to realize this and get off his back a little.
