Sending an extra guy or 2 is one thing....I'm talking about teams spending a week game planning for a team and QB...Sending exotic blitzes, phantom coverages, d line stunts, delayed blitzes, everything you can think of I don't think you guys realize that 9 times out of 10 these 3rd string heroes of the preaseason don't pan out because the situations are night and day Petty has some things going for him though....Very good physical attributes, a great college career, and he keeps improving I just don't think the last game proves much of anything....but it's definitely nice to see him throwing it around like that He very well might be ready to be the backup it's just unknown
Is Petty being the backup any more of a risk than Geno? We know Geno has played terribly under bad circumstances (any pretty damn bad in the preseason as well). I would much prefer the unknown of Petty compared to the poor play of Geno. I'm sick of this "he's won games in the NFL." It means nothing to me. He won 11 games in 2 seasons, that is nothing worth bragging about.
Agree, Petty would look lost but what young QB wouldn't my take is he would learn from the experiences. Conversely, we have a 4 year pro who still cannot read the D, he still locks on to his primary receiver and throws into triple coverage? BTW - Petty took three sacks and did not turn the ball over despite a leaky line and no running game. He took a big hit as he released a 19-yard strike to Sudfeld for the Jets’ first touchdown. just saying we have greater upside then Geno...IMHO.
I get it. So there were no playoff expectations for Geno but you want him to be the backup? Look, you *might* be able to get Geno to be a winning QB if you are willing to change the offense completely. Here are the number of passing attempts by the leading rushing QB's last year: Newton 495 Taylor 380 (427 if played the full season) Wilson 483 A. Smith 470 These guys make great use of their legs and decision making. Here's Geno's average attempts for his two seasons starting: G Smith 433 Kaepernick was right about 430 attempts his first winning season, where he also rushed for over 500 yards in 2013. Just for comparison, Brady has made over 600 passing attempts in 4 of the last 5 years, Carson Palmer makes about 550 attempts per year, Rivers, Ryan and E. Manning also make over 600 attempts/yr generally. So, say Fitz gets hurt. You need to switch to a SF 2013 style offense, minimize Geno's passing attempts, get him to make smart decisions about when and where to run, and put up with endless bitching from guys like Marshall about not getting enough throws. Could Gailey do it? Or, since you are paying big bucks to Marshall and Decker, go with the guys who *might* be able to throw more reliably? I'm glad I'm not running the team. Ron
Yes, they got worse under his last HC, but his completion percentage wasn't that great under O'Brien, either, so his mechanics may have been bad even then. He had a great WR or two his freshman year to help him. I think it was around 53%, but I may be mistaken.
It may have been a big reach to take him. I was stunned when they did. I can understand why they did, because of his football IQ, prototypical size, and arm strength, and I'm sure they figured they could fix his mechanics in one off season. We'll see if he can fix them, or if his confidence is totally shot after the last two seasons at PSU. It's starting to look to me like his confidence is shot and/or he has a serious case of the "yips."
I totally agree. How long do you give him is a good question. It will be interesting to see what the Jets do. He's not under contract for next season. will they keep him as the backup/insurance because of his physical tools and experience and what they've seen in practice, or will they save a roster spot, and roll the dice on Petty being ready to backup Fitz should he go down with an injury? At this point, I'm not sure if Geno will ever develop or if he's even capable of that. I thought he deserved a shot this season and he's had an opportunity, but hasn't looked very good in preseason. He knows the offense, has the arm to make all the throws, but still locks onto his receivers, makes bad decisions, and worst of all is not a motivator or leader. He has improved, I guess, but not enough, and my patience iwth him is about gone. I was against bringing Fitz back, but am now very thankful that they did. I'll trust and understand whatever decision the CS makes regarding Geno, I just hope it works out for the best for the team, and if they keep Geno, they don't wind up losing Petty, a young WR or another young player who could have helped the team going forward.
He probably does have a higher upside, but I'd rather go with Geno if Fitz is knocked out of a game, or we need him for a couple weeks. If Fitz is knocked out for the season early on then maybe Petty is the answer if you don't think Geno can do it over the course of a season I get that some people hate Geno but his last 5 or 6 games playing against real NFL defenses he held his own for the most part.....He played like shit in the last preseason game but he's had a decent camp (a few bad days here and there) If the Jets coaches/FO stick with Petty as the backup that will say to me that they really like Petty's progress more than anything else...I trust them either way but Geno is the safer option just because Petty is more of an unknown than anything else to the general public
No sorry but just no you can not judge Smith on 5 games you judge him as a whole and his whole body of work is bad coupled with this preseason, if anything if Petty looks better you roll with Petty. We know what Geno can do and most of it is not very pretty. Every argument you make about Petty can be said about Smith First if Fitz is injured neither QB will take us to the playoffs. 2nd Petty looks to have more upside and will be with the team next yr where either way Smith will be gone, and Petty will more then likely be the back up. How about Denver getting ready to start a qb that never took a snap last yr. Most fans here would be having conniptions over that.
Actually, his completion percentage during his freshman year under Coach O'Brien was somewhere close to 59-60%. Nothing to really write home about at the collegiate level but still impressive nonetheless when you consider he was only an 18 year old kid, a true freshman right out of high school who was learning and applying O'Brien's highly complex and sophisticated playbook from a Head Coach notorious for being a screaming, high-pressure hot head. I think Hackenberg's completion percentages declined somewhere between 52-54% by the end of his final season as a Junior long after he was abandoned by the coaches and surrounding talent on the field. From the beginning of his collegiate career and throughout the debacle of the Penn State scandals, Hackenberg was a model figure of loyalty, bravery, intelligence and leadership. Seeing how the kid has superior intelligence, work ethic, mental toughness, a super powerful arm and plenty of natural talent, I have little doubt that he'll be able to adjust/correct the flaws in his mechanics to mitigate the ongoing concerns regarding his accuracy.
My only concern with him is his mental state. If he hasn't lost confidence and/or isn't shell-shocked like Kenny O'Brien got to be after getting sacked so much, I definitely believe that Gailey and Patullo can fix his mechanics. He's all the things you said, and I believe that he wants to be great, and will work his butt off until his mechanics are fixed. We just all have to be patient not only with Hack, but how the Jets are handling Hack.
Why would you judge a QB based on his rookie play?? You judge a young QB on what they have done in their last few games playing as they are continuing to improve and learn the position Geno did OK in the first preseason game and bad last game....he's been pretty solid in training camp with a couple bad days just like everyone has It's just one man's opinion on the subject....All that matters is what Bowles and Macc decide to do and I will trust them either way We're talking about the backup QB anyway.....not the starter the backup!! I feel like Allen Iverson talking about practice
You at least give him fair chance and what I mean by that let him play with this talented offense. To judge a QB who shouldn't had started day 1 plus had 2 garabe teams when he started. Take a look at Fitz it took him 11 years to put up his best numbers. Does anyone on here think Fitz would have put up close to the numbers he did last season what's the two teams Gino's played with? I Understand this is all pointless because the Geno haters already have their minds made up and no matter what he would do it would never change it. I'm not and never said Geno will be a good slash great quarterback. But how do you know what he's going to be unless you have talent around them.
He had that chance last year @Oakland. Whilst his headline stats were good and pretty much what we all hoped he could do 60-65% completion rate, 2-1 Td/Turnover rate - He failed the eyeball test and we can go to the game thread and its aftermath if we want to relive some of the boneheaded plays he did make. Surprisingly, the HC decided that he'd go with the QB who couldn't grip the ball properly and needing surgery over his former starter in the next game. We know what he is, he is the Genocoaster where you'll get some highlights like the Peake TD throw mixed in with a lot of staring down his receiver, throwing into coverage, poor footwork, poor field and clock management and a general feeling of foreboding everytime the ball is snapped.
People are worrying about Petty's lack of NFL playing time when looking at the prospect of Fitzpatrick missing some time due to injury as though having a more experienced QB at the #2 spot would make all the difference. Last year we lost Fitz early in the Raider game and had our NFL experienced QB come off the bench, The result of that NFL experience was a loss. If Petty has more upside and the only reason we are holding on to Geno is experience, let the kid have a chance to get that experience. Geno is a stopgap at best.
The Defense stayed home for that Oakland game so it pretty much didn't matter who the quarterback was. Although Geno actually played well enough to have won the game. That one interception was not a killer. I am hopeful that the Jets CS and FO don't come anywhere near this board to read all of the nonsense spewed from biased individuals that speak about topics as if they have the inside scoop. This is what I believe; Everybody is focused on Bryce and Geno while Fitz is looking exactly like the fitz of old. Why does Fitz get a pass? The guy sucks! Those of you who think that Bryce is ready to play, I would suggest you watch Saturday's game with sincere scrutiny. That's if he gets into the game. I expect to see a lot of Fitz and expect him to not score until probably the 2nd quarter. Enter Geno - watch what could have been but unfortunately, next year he will be learning a new offense. Bryce and Hack shoot it out next year...............
I have real concerns with Fitz looking at our early schedule....Both health wise and ability wise I think you're right that people are so focused on the backups that they are not aware that this thing could get ugly fast with Fitz at the helm Just gotta hope the running game and defense play great to keep us in these games ....if we can come out with Fitz uninjured and a .500 or better record we'll be OK as the schedule eases up A big IF though
Yes we are talking about the back up and that back up may need to play. geno does not pas the eyeball test and looked bad in the 1st preseason game. Threw the ball into triple coverage there and got away with it. Poor decisions and stared down receivers, still has sloppy foot work and cant read a defense. The point that we are even talking about it means it is on the coaches minds. they have no ties to Smith but drafted Petty so I am betting if it is close they go with their guy.
sere watching the same game he did not play well enough to win the game he made poor choices when the game was close, running out of bounds taking a sack throwing an interception.. The best most papers said at the time was he was not the only reason we lost which is true from NJonline There was good and bad in Smith's performance, which factored out to 27 of 42 passing for 265 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and a Total QBR of 66.2; Smith also rushed twice for 34 yards and was sacked three times. Let's take a closer look. What Smith did well. He didn't make any devastating turnovers, which is always a plus when talking about Smith. Even his lone interception—a brutal throw into double coverage that was picked off by ageless safety Charles Woodson—wasn't damaging, as the Raiders followed it by missing a 52-yard field goal. But Smith led the Jets to 20 points against a Raiders team with an outstanding pass rush—and Smith did this even though the Jets made no effort to run the ball for much of the game. If he relied too much on throwing to wideout Brandon Marshall (18 targets), so be it; Fitzpatrick has looked in Marshall's direction a lot, too. But Decker and wideouts Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Kerley combined for 16 catches, and Smith even threw a touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis, for which there should have been an immediate on-field ceremony, considering how little the Jets use their tight ends as pass catchers. Per Pro Football Focus, Smith was pressured in 18 of his 47 dropbacks but had a 104.0 passer rating on those plays. That's a step in the right direction for a guy who had turned it over 41 times in his first two seasons. PLUS: David Harris says Jets were 'disgusting' against Raiders What Smith did not do well. There was the bad pick mentioned above, though there proved to be no consequences from it. But when the Jets needed Smith to rally them with a fourth-quarter drive after he got them within two touchdowns, the offense stalled and sputtered. There were at least two times when Smith was flushed from the pocket and held the ball too long and took a sack when it would have been much better to throw it away. He showed a lack of touch a handful of times, especially downfield. Smith was successful when checking underneath—19 of 23 on throws of fewer than nine yards, per Pro Football Focus—but noticeably less so when he really had to chuck it. Fans might not have liked Smith's performance, and they'd be (mostly) right about that. But the Jets lost this game because of their defense, first and foremost. And if Fitzpatrick's injury is serious enough to keep him out this week (and perhaps beyond), Smith would still be the Jets' next-best option, no matter who they might trade for or pluck off the street. That's assuming Smith's own bruised (non-throwing) shoulder won't keep him from playing Sunday against the Jaguars. Grade: C
So it looks like in the 3rd preseason game it will be Fitz, then Geno, and MAYBE some Petty or Hack. So the Geno experiment continues. ugh... If the Jets decide to keep Geno as backup AND keep Petty, then fine. When the Jets missed out on Winston and Mariotta I was hoping they would pick Petty and was happy they did. He has a great attitude and demeanor, he acts and looks like a big-time QB, throws like a big-time QB, moves around well in the pocket and he has an energy and some fire. You seen it in his play at Baylor and you're seeing it now in 2016 Jets pre-season. Petty just needed seasoning and to learn a pro-style system and to be developed slowly. Year 2 of his career he has shown he can learn and play in this system and I think year 3 will be the year he will compete for the #1 slot. If keeping Geno means LOSING Petty, then I will be seriously disenfranchised as a long-time Jets fan. Geno is inconsistent, an emotional rollercoaster, at times acts like a jackass, and it is just infuriating to watch him or root on the Jets when he plays. Its harder to watch Geno than it was watching Sanchez at his worst. He has shown NO progress in his first few preseason games of the season and I dont expect him to improve at all. The Jets will be considered a laughingstock by the league by keeping on the roster. And for the record I liked him and was rooting for him when he was a rookie. But I am done with the Geno Smith Jets.
