So if Fitzpatrick gets hurt, and Geno goes in and loses 3 games, then Petty comes in and wins, wouldn't it be a terrible situation in that the better player was on the bench? That's not to say I completely believe that would happen, but Petty's upside at this point is higher than Geno because of the somewhat unknown that he is.

I don't think cutting Geno is the best decision in the world, but I do like the idea of the upside that the player might possess, especially if they perform similarly in camp and preseason.

It is quite ironic that the people who were adamant about signing Fitz because he is the best option to win this season, and that this team has pieces in place to win now are the same people who think that Geno should get cut.

If you truly believed that the Jets had to sign Fitz because he was the best option to win for this season then by that logic and line of thinking you have to understand that Geno is the only legitimate option for backup.

But of course the Geno hate is so rampant that logical thought goes out the window.

Like I said throw Petty in with the twos see what he can do before anyone gets cut. Either way Geno will be gone next yr but if it close and Petty looks as good as Geno then you let the guy you did not draft and will not resign go

If you're starting quarterback goes down, the season usually becomes a wash anyway and is essentially down the drain. There hasn't been much good in the two starting seasons that Geno has been on the field, and the locker room displayed how little confidence they have in him by celebrating like little kids when Fitzpatrick walked through that door.

Geno also hasn't showed much improvement in preseason game one on his fundamentals. His footwork is pretty bad, and he ends up cockeyed in the pocket and using his arm to make the throws rather than putting his body in the correct position to make the throw. As a result, you end up with bad ball placement leading to the near interception he almost threw. If his footwork is still that of a rookie quarterback, why does everyone try to use the case that the better talent around him will yield better results? If he's making shitty throws into coverage, it's tough to imagine even Jerry Rice catching those balls.

It's perplexing that people have so much faith in this guy, and we saw just about all one needed to know when he came into Oakland. The defense tightened up and we were in position to try to at least make the game much closer than it had been, and he played terrible situational football. Took a couple of bad sacks that turned a couple of potential 4th and manageables into auto-punt situations.

What inspires you to think he's suddenly going to get it? What have you seen, that I or others haven't seen? Everyone likes to use Fitzpatrick's past against him, but no one wants to use Geno's past against him because of his age. For every Alex Smith that finally figures it out in his 4th, 5th, and 6th year there's about a thousand other players that don't.

The leadership aspect is also massively overlooked by this board. Whether you have the #1 defense in the league or not, the quarterback is still the leader of the team and needs to inspire confidence in the rest of the team. It's not really a skill that's acquired or developed. I don't see him as a leader or a good NFL quarterback and for that I'd rather see someone with more upside given the chance when the season pretty much turns into a throwaway anyways once the starter goes down. If Geno impressed anyone in the league as a backup quarterback they'd take a look at the roster and toss us a conditional 7th for him, as teams have reportedly inquired about AJ McCarron and Mike Glennon.

To each their own I guess. I'd just like someone to break down the positives and truthfully tell me they see him developing into a starter. I highly doubt many of you really think that.

Umm more like geno was still not ready from the injury. Obviously or they would have made him inactive and cut him this season.

I have never seen so much effort put into irrational, speculative and unfounded BS.
But what you are saying is that winning this season doesn't really matter - Gotcha.

Vilma, if Petty were able to showcase this and close the gap, I would have no issues moving on from Geno Smith, but I think its too soon, the Jets need that security right now. I think they are both unknowns to an extent and that's why I believe the Jets should carry 4. Geno has had a lot of bad games, but within that bad are some really good ones too, perhaps they can build off of it. Geno isn't a detriment to the team, he's not a locker room cancer. Do I think Geno is better then last season? Absolutely not, he is still holding onto the football far too long.

Did it ever occur to you that people don't think Geno helps win?

Well thought out response, with absolutely no analysis attached. Do you come here to talk about football or yank Geno off in your posts? Feel free to discuss football if you'd like, but if not go to the bullshit forum. It's there for a reason.

That's not at all what I said. I think Petty offers a better chance at possibly winning than Geno if Fitzpatrick were to go down. Your reading comprehension skills are near that of Geno007.

If he's not improving at this point, where's the hope that he's ever going to improve? He got somewhat better from year one to year two, if you merely look at statistics. Watching the games, he was still terrible in critical moments and got benched for Michael friggain Vick. That's all I really need to know about the guy.

Geno fits Gailey's offense far better in comparison to Marty's. Gailey seems to think Geno can bring something to the table, I think this is Geno's last season with the Jets no doubt about it, but the fact that he knows the offense, gives us some extra security at QB if Fitz were to go down. If Petty can't surpass Geno, then Geno is staying here.

One advantage Petty has over Geno is Petty plays for almost free for the next 3 yrs. Geno is looking at his 2nd contract, which for QBs normally means big $'s.

I remember russell wilson coming in and winning SB on his rookie deal......once he got paid the team blew up.

Would love to get a few good years of free QB play....if Petty can come in next season (yr 3) and start and play well, that's a HUGE bonus. Geno's gonna want $14-$18/yr to sign a 2nd contract. If he fills in this season and does OK, he'll get it.

The only thing the coaches want to see if Petty has is whether he deserves a roster spot, not if he should be the #2. With so many good receivers on the roster, it'd be a shame to get rid of one for a career backup.

That's pretty silly. Not to mention, what do you mean the Seahawks blew up? Who'd they lose? Some good not great offensive lineman and completely replaceable defensive players such as Mebane, Browner, Bruce Irvin? I guess Golden Tate was the biggest lost. Outside that they have retained Bennett, Chancellor, Sherman, Wagner and Earl Thomas. I hope Geno plays anywhere near the level of Russell Wilson and we find our franchise quarterback for $18 million a year.

Once again, fans being concerned about the money like its their own.

I didn't want Fitzpatrick returning during the offseason I personally wanted to go with a youth movement starting Geno but now that we've resigned Fitz on a 1 year deal (make or break season) I'm one who's in favor of and likes the idea of keeping/monitoring all 4 QB's on an individual basis.

    Below I'll explain why.

First and foremost as of right now I'm over going back and fourth regarding QB contrivircy amongst our fan base and simply ready to let it all play out. See what we have.

    Why not see what happens.

See how everyone from top to bottom performs.

See who shows or doesn't show signs of progression moving forward.

Why not let it all play out.

Speaking objectively that's when as a fan I'll be in stronger position to actually sit down and evaluate the coaching staffs decision making from there. Right now it's currently too premature to assume. This is the route I've decided to take in order to fully enjoy the up coming season that awaits us ahead. I wanna see them all play good while hopefully improving their stock.

Only time will tell but I'm optimisticly hopeful about our 2016 Quarterback situation. When i thoroughly think about it, it's just different than in years past. There's real depth here.

From a veteran professional in Fitzpatrick all the way down to a younger raw rookie prospect in an only 21 years of age Hackenberg. And then within the middle you have two QB's about the same age in Geno & Petty. One being a 4th year player with three years of NFL experience consisting of two seasons of starting experience and one year of learning from the outside looking in as a #2 backup and the other being a promising 2nd year QB out of Baylor without any real NFL playing time experience. One on an expiring contract the other locked up. Imo they both have a place here and both can serve a purpose.

This is creating for mixture. I'll willingly & anxiously pull for all 4 while allowing it to play out before passing too much judgement.

With Fitzpatrick having more overall continuity as a starter within the same system due to last year as well continued player chemistry from last season (looked very good utilizing Enunwa) then who knows, a 1998 Broadway Vinny type of season isn't out of the realm of possibility for Fitzpatrick and this offense. If he can improve his efficiency regarding Completion Percentage (accuracy) I then believe he can impact big time with this much talent now surrounding our QB position.

Chan Galley has a chance of being our X-Factor with Ryan returning in terms of having more familiarity of his offense regarding play calling as an offensive coordinator. Should have better chemistry and feel for different situations as an OC and now has lots to work with come this up coming season. Chan has a veteran QB who's had an understanding of his offensives philosophy dating back to Buffalo to run his offense through in Fitzpatrick. A proven top notch receiving duo of Marshall and Decker to threaten opposing defenses as well as a (looks to be) young, promising and an emerging Enunwa at receiver along with now featuring two pass catching HB's out of the backfield in Forte & Powell. Clady returns to form & imo it's the makings of a top 5 offense. A bunch of unknown pass catching prospects such as Amaro, Smith, Peake, Jalin and Thompkins/Ross to mix and match for added complexity.

Why not let it (all) play out, because as a fan base we haven't had a true franchise QB to build our team around since I'd say Chad Pennington. And long before Penny arrived. Unfortunately Pennington's multiple shoulder surgues to his throwing arm ruined our chances of a top 5 quarterback. With #10's I.Q, mechanics, understanding of the position along with precision like accuracy Chad would've been an absolute animal along with arm strength in which was taken away from him at an early age. Was electric on the deep ball with Randy Moss while at Marshall. Injuries stole our franchise hopeful but nonetheless still to this day my favorite Jets QB.

With that said and I'm closing it's just been too long. So if keeping all 4 gives us an increased chance of finding a legit franchise caliber QB to build around moving forward, then I'm all for being patient while allowing things to play out.

So the jets FO is going to cut a guy they drafted last year in the 4th round who has several years remaining on his contract over a guy on the last year of his contract who they clearly don't view as a starter? Why would they be so sour on there own guy already? Haven't they made it perfectly clear by there actions that they aren't interested in Geno starting? Why are you so quick to call a second year guy a career backup but not a fourth year guy who still has shit footwork?
