It seems only a few people dont want to accept this. Its just baffling to me. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Ive been on record as i think the nfl state of qb is a disater. Not many good anywhere Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
There are a lot of good QBs in the NFL today. Brady, Roethlisberger, Dalton, Luck, Rivers, Carr, Eli, Romo, Rodgers, Newton, Brees, Ryan, Winston, Palmer, Wilson, etc. It's just that we don't have any of them.
The sample size is about as small as you can get. I am glad Petty has improved leaps and bounds, but to say he's already better then Geno Smith or that he can easily beat him out is premature. I see 0 upside in cutting Geno Smith. Cheap 1 yr deal, knows the offense for 2 yrs. You could argue, Geno Smith is one of the better backups in the league, how many backups realistically would you take over him? If Geno is cut today, he will be a Cowboy tomorrow. If Fitz gets hurt and we throw Petty out there, he might pull the best Brooks Bollinger impression. That season alone is why I don't want to cut Geno.
Thats like a handful of a few. The overwhelming majority are underwhelming. Hence you have teams reaching every season. You and i had this discussion before. I dont think there are many good qbs. The stats are higher because of the new rules, but that doesn't mean theyre better. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
I think people are prematurely crowing Petty as the backup QB, 1 preseason game in. He needs to close the gap a lot more, he's closing it but he's got a long way to go. Your scenario states 3 QBs, no problem with your original post, I do see some overreaction here. I know it's against your answer, but we need to keep all 4. Who cares about Tommy Bohananon? Do we truly think he will make or break the Jets season?
I listed 15 quarterbacks, almost half the league. Unless you're counting backups in your overwhelming majority, but they've always been terrible.
Holding 4 QB's fucks a roster up. The upside to cutting a QB is that you can use that roster spot for someone who actually contributes on special teams and in sub-packages. The upside to cutting Smith in particular is that he is gone next year. Geno Smith isn't good. All Petty needs to be is close to as good as him. This isn't some kind of wild, unprecedented accomplishment we're talking about. I mean the guy has been playing Madden in the offseason for Christs sakes! I couldn't care less if the Cowboys picked up Geno Smith, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if the Jets weren't putting up a front about how they value Geno Smith in order to get some kind of draft pick out of a team like Dallas.
We have no idea what he is because this franchise doesn't know how to evaluate or develop a qb. That being said there arent any solid options for qbs on this roster. Its gonna be worse next season. I dont see Fitz or Geno back. Which means we'll sign another journeyman or make someone like glennon a starter. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
It does mess a roster up, but I don't think the Jets have much of a choice. They need those options at the QB position and they don't want to play Hack. Fitz could get hurt, Geno could get hurt, and / or Petty could get hurt. Jets want QBs that know the system, I don't want to see them pick up a guy off the street and learn a new system. At least with 4, you have 3 that you can absolutely play. I don't know how the Jets can stash Hack on the IR, but they should try and do it once the season starts. The problem is he wouldn't be able to practice, not like he's getting reps anyway. Jets have to find a way to keep these 4 around, the 3 guys have experience within the system and have chemistry with the teammates. The 4th guy has more upside then the other guys. Getting a guy off the street will only push the Jets quest for a franchise QB farther away because you are giving up reps. Get Bohanon off the roster and teach Kellen Davis to play some full back. 2 useless players IMO, but you can salvage one. Right now, this is about winning this season with the idea of protecting the project QBs. Geno is below average, I cannot deny that, but do I think he gives us a better chance to win in comparison to Petty right now? Absolutely, the guy is in a contract year and if he were to string a few decent games together, we can still contend for a playoff spot.
Every team has players on the back end of the roster who are never active for the game. So one of these guys for us will be a potential franchise QB instead of a 10th lineman. So what?
As much as people hate him here, we keep geno. If fitz goes down, he gives us the best chance to win now. The jets obviously don't see petty as the future either which is why we drafted hackenberg. The real question is next year, do we let hack start early or try and keep fitz. Hack will be the only QB on our roster to start the offseason
because if petty gave us a better chance, he would be practicing with the 1s when fitz wasn't here. It's not whether I think he gives us the best chance, it's clear the jets coaching staff thinks he does
The same coaching staff that is giving him more reps after PS week 1? I think the situation is a lot more fluid than many on here believe.
