Douglas did address both Edge and WR. He can't help it that both Zuniga and Mims have been injured. It isn't his fault that we have Covid-19 and there were no OTAs, minicamps, a weird TC, and no preseason games. (It's been said that all the hamstring strains and pulls wouldn't have happened if we had had a normal offseason and preseason.) We won't know if he adequately addressed edge for another 2-3 years, but my guess is that he hasn't. My guess is that he knew he wasn't going to be able to get an elite edge prospect where we were drafting, so he added someone that he thought could help add pressure and be a flexible player that could help, and has plans to draft an edge early next season and maybe sign a 2nd tier pass rusher in FA. In terms of WR, Mims could develop into our #1 WR. If so, then Douglas addressed the WR position long term. Was it as much as I wanted? No, but I believe that he will address WR early in next year's draft, and if there is someone good at a reasonable price in FA, he will try to sign him. Based on comments and roster moves, the Jets are evidently pretty high on Vyncint Smith and J. Smith. If Perriman plays well, Douglas could be planning to re-sign him, and Cager could develop, so it isn't like he didn't address the WR position. He didn't address it as much as you, I, Herndonfan and some others wanted, but I have to believe that he will address it in 2021. If I didn't believe that, I'd walk away from being a Jets fan now. I couldn't keep rooting for the team. I'll tell you now that if he doesn't seriously address the WR and Edge positions in the 2021 off season, then I'm done with this team. I can only root for a team as long as there is some hope that they can get things right and win. If Douglas turns out to be a bust, then there's no hope for this team as long as the Johnsons own it, and we all might as well find something better to do with our time and energy. One of the good things about Douglas is that he's not gonna be like Mac and throw big money at aging or old FAs who are on the downside of their career, or even younger ones who want too much money to come here. I believe that he's going to maintain a team salary structure, and build primarily through the draft. In FA, I think he's more likely to sign 8-10 players who are second tier who will improve depth and competition, than he is to sign 2-3 big name, big contract FAs. The Ravens don't do that (sign big contract FAs), and I don't think the Eagles do it very often either, if at all. You know as well as I do, my friend, that one can never have enough quality QBs and that it is the most important position on a team. That is even more true with the way Sam has been inconsistent and can't stay healthy. If Morgan develops into our long-term backup at QB, or if we can wind up trading him in a year or two for a decent draft pick, then he will be worth way more than probably any WR that was left in the 4th round this year. With Adams gone, it's a good thing he did draft Davis, and Davis looks like he is going to be a very good player. We weren't going to get a WR or Edge in the 6th round who was going to help us, and I can't believe that you're complaining about drafting Mann. Mann is a great punter, and probably the best punting prospect to come out of the draft in years. With a good HC and better talent, he will be huge for the Jets pinning opponents deep, and giving us better field position, which should make things easier for both our offense and defense. With his background and having learned from Ozzie, I will be shocked if Douglas can't recognize how bad the lack of Edge and WR have held us back. He'd have to be pretty stupid, and really not know much about football in 2020 to not be able to recognize that, and I don't think he's stupid. Douglas isn't going to just throw money at a problem position. There are certain types of players he wants on the team, and he plans to build primarily through the draft, something that we've all been screaming for for years. I would think that you'd be happy about this. You know as well as I that the best WRs and Edges need to be drafted, they just don't come available in FA very often, and when they do, there's usually some negative character issue, or they want too much money. I'm sure that he wants to get young, cheap WRs that can grow along with Sam rather than older ones who are on the downside of their careers, who he'll have to pay more than they're worth, and then only have them around for a year or two. As others have said, he couldn't fill all the holes in one offseason. I don't think you'd be happy if he had drafted 3 WRs and traded for or signed Clowney or the kid from the Jags who was traded to Minny, and ignored the OL. It's early, but Becton looks like he definitely is going to be a star LT. Perine looks like he will be a solid contibutor as well as Davis. Mann definitely will be. Did Mac or Idzik ever get 4 solid contributors from a draft? Hall has the potential to be a solid CB, and Mims also has a ton of potential. Douglas could have drafted 4 future starters and our punter. We haven't seen anything from Zuniga yet, but he could be a solid role player and depth if he can get healthy and stay that way. If not, then it would be fair to criticize Douglas for taking Zuniga instead of a WR, but he at least tried to address the Edge position, and he's not going to hit on every pick.
This. Gase would need to take Dowell Loggains with him. The thing is, it's really too late to be changing the offensive system, and I don't know that Cooter could tweak it successfully, but for certain, it would be hard for him to be worse at play calling and making adjustments than Gase.
Even if we had "ruined" them, it's a completely different CS now with different philosophies, methods and approaches, so one cannot claim that a franchise does anything consistently when they have had so many different HCs and OCs over the last 10-15 years.
Not in a 4-3 defense. You see the problem I see the problem why are the Jets drafting DT every year then. They clearly need an edge rusher yet they never draft one. My reading comprehension is ok. The Jets scouts, coaches and GM talent evaluation is the problem
The positive in all this is that Darnold and Gase won't be here next year if they are as bad as they looked Sunday. The positive is that we get a once in a generation qb, who in my opinion is a much better prospect than Darnold ever was.
