A-Rod had trouble dealing with the pressure of 250 over 10.

Fans are going to want a show on a nightly basis from the guy if he's matching the full payroll of a small market team.

If you didn't know better you would think this is what The Captain should have been saying. However, we all know better.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/10092007/sports/yankees/alex__itsonme.htm

    "It's on me," he said.

"Whatever blame you put on me," he said, "that's fine."

"The most courageous group of guys," he said, "that I've ever played with."

"No explanations," Rodriguez would say later, blinking bloodshot eyes. "No excuses."

Then there was Derek Jeter, the captain, whose reputation for big-game reliability takes an enormous hit now, who grounded into three killing double plays across the final two games and finished at .176.

Jeter's culpability will dissolve, it always does.

I don't know. I can't see it being less that $35/year over 10 years, and I really think Boras will try to drive that up.

The only way I think he'll make less is if he says he actually wants to stay with the Yankees, thereby taking some of his leverage away from himself.

I can't possibly see a contract of more then 7 years at age 32. The $35 a year I think is right. I also think no one but the Yankees will pay that and only because they get that 10 a year from Texas for the next 3 years.

Here's something to think about. If he decides to stay and the Yankees decide to pay him the argument can (and will) be made that this is now Arod's team and no longer Jeter's team whether he is wearing the "C" on his shirt or not.

I don't know how any of you wouldn't want A-Rod back.

For those who don't, please explain who you would want to replace him at 3rd Base? I'd love to hear this.

Meaning? He would never be thought of that way if he was only ever here as part of a trade. However, if the Yankees give him a new contract and pay him that kind of money then they are saying they plan to build the team around him. Believe me, that will be the spin. I already saw something like that in an article this morning where they referred to him as the center of the Yankee universe if they resign him.

LOL..sounds like the price just went up. At least in Boras's eyes.

"Boras, known as one of baseball's shrewdest and most hard-nosed negotiators, tipped his hand Monday as to what negotiations would be like if Rodriguez opts out. He said he will tell prospective bidders that Rodriguez could play until he is 45, which will allow him to not only become baseball's all-time home run king, but also the all-time hits leader. If those accomplishments are within reach, Boras said he will argue that Rodriguez will be worth somewhere between a half-billion and a billion dollars over a decade to a team's regional sports network.

"One of the other things that Alex has that some of the other things that Alex has that few players have is he has network value," Boras said. "That means for a regional sports network he has an impact on in that may allow that regional sports network to increase by a half-a-billion to a billion dollars over a 10-year period because of the ratings increase that he will bring. His fan base will subscribe to that network to watch him play and they will sell more advertising. This has certainly been evidenced in New York."

i guess the way you worded it made it seem to me like he would "replace" or "out" Jeter as the leader/captain. i just dont think that it will be anyones team besides jeter as long as he is playing. i do understand what you mean by the center of the yankees universe concept though.

No, he won't be captain. Funny thing which few people probably remember but Torre fought like hell to not have Jeter made captain. I do think that a lot of people will refer to it as Arod's team though.

I thought that once he opts out or gets a new contract, there is no more Texas money.

If that means what I think it means, Boras is nuts. Correct me if i am wrong, but if Boras is looking for a $500,000,000- $1,000,000,000 dollar contract? Ok that is absolutely ludicris. In theory, is there anyone out there who could give him that kind of money over the course of a 13 year deal? I think it's not possible. But I may be wrong, as well as I could be wrong about Boras trying to get A-rod for a half-billion dollars straight up...

There isn't but they can extend his current contract. Only the Yankees can, that is.

No, he's just saying that the network can make that much off him. Not that Arod would or should get that much. What I found funny was that he thinks he can play until he's 45. Maybe he can but I hope he isn't looking for a 12 year deal.

I still say in the end he won't opt out. If he does the Yankees are not going to be a player which means everybody else can offer less. If you really listen to Boras's comments it's pretty obvious. He keeps saying IF he opts out. That's the first time he has ever been so gun shy in his life.

If he plays untill he is 45 he will be the first to 1,000 career home runs.

That was the point of the article. He would hit 1000 HRS and break Rose's all time hit record too. If he did that, the new stadium would surely be known as the house that Arod built or at least the house that Arod paid off.
