He's thrown some bullets on outs this year. Unfortunately he also telegraphs those passes too often, particularly to the left side, and the routes have gotten jumped several times. I think his arm strength is definitely much better than Chad's pre-injury. Chad used to throw with his arm motion independent of the rest of his bodily mechanics. That's why he was freakishly accurate on short to mid-range passes on the run. I think Sanchez mechanics are poor at this point though. He ducks his left shoulder as he spins to throw to his left and I'll bet 75% of the defensive backs he plays are watching that and using it to throttle the quick out. He also has developed a really bad habit of rolling out too quickly on the play action to the left. He barely stabs at the back with the ball and then he's rolling that direction. My guess is nobody is getting fooled at all by now. Most of the problems he is having at this point are on throws across his body to the left or when he has rolled out that way. I have no clue at all why the Jets are doing so much of that because he's really hurting them when the play goes that direction. I'm going to go back to laying most of this at the feet of Schottenheimer. He clearly is not getting the best production out of Sanchez and I do see him regressing in some areas from week to week. I hold my breath every time I see Sanchez roll out left or escape in that direction at this point because he has a huge unforced error rate on mid-range throws to that side.
Am I the only one that thinks Sanchez stared down his reciever on the first pick? I mean sure the play design didnt help, but sanchez keeping his eyes on the reciever the whole way through esspecially on a congested play like that was doomed before he even let go of the ball.
I think that the Jets current offensive system creates zones of activity and dead pockets with regularity. I don't know exactly how it does it but I've noticed with all of the Jets QBs since Schotty arrived that an unusual number of wide open receivers get missed in the progression. I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, that when Sanchez rolls left or right he really is only looking at the receivers on that side. I've noticed that every time he rolls left he throws the ball on that side. If he's outside the left hashmark the ball is going to wind up somewhere from left seam out. I'm also guessing that he's as easy to read as a book when he rolls out that side because he's throwing a ton of picks when he's out there. The Jets really need to change their schemes at this point and do something different. Sanchez has thrown 14 picks in the last 7 games and probably 10 of them have been on the left side. They'd be better off just not throwing to that side at all at this point. It can't be helping him to have that kind of performance when they go that way.
Why no screen plays in this offense? Shottenheimer is on my mind today, as usual. I don't feel he puts Sanchez in the best position at all. Here are the major flaws he brings to the table as I see them: 1) The Jets don't run any screen pass plays. Maybe it's because Leon Washington is gone, but it seem ridiculous that one of the most effective plays for dealing with an effective pass rush is missing from BS' playbook and Sanchez's options. 2) To many first down runs into the line. The Jets O-line is highly suspect to begin with, so on 2nd and 3rd long plays, Sanchez has almost no time to make a play. First down is the one down that the defense will usually respect play action, but BS runs most of the time. 3) Sanchez is frequently under center on 3rd and long. Why? The defense knows it 90% likely that a pass is coming...why make the kid have to backpedal? Why not let him sit back and get a look at the defense? 4) I posted this elsewhere, but BS' pass patterns too often send two receivers and multiple defenders into the same area. Finally, this is the one that bugs me most, the one I scream 5 or 6 times each game: 5) Why don't they send 3 receivers deep; Cotchery and Clowney down the sidelines and Keller down the center? Put Sanchez in shotgun, let him get a read on the field, then take a 3 step drop and throw the ball to the guy with single coverage. You can even send a back on a circle route as a safety valve down the sideline, he'll probably be wide open or you can have Edwards run down the hashes and then break off the pattern into the middle as a safety outlet. WIth 3 or even 4 players run deep patterns, it's very likely that at least one player will be open. It's a fast play, you can run out it out of your end zone if your backed up, provided the QB understands you must make the read and throw the ball somewhere immediately. It's a completion, pass interference, or overthrown. And even if it's overthrown, it loosens the defense up and gives the receivers some room to operate.
I agree. I thought with Braylon now in the mix we would be able to spread the filed and the D much better. How come several times today I saw 2 jets recievers within 5 yards of each other? I swear sometimes I feel I could be calling better offensive play than BS.
Leon being out is probably a pretty big reason but yeah, you make a good point. When we were 8-3 last year we were putting on screen play clinics for the league. That's all but disappeared. Screens are perfect for our rookie quarterback.. low risk and occasional high gains.
Yea, why make Sanchez throw 40 yards down the field when we can get a first down on a 1 yard pass? At least sanchez still gets to throw the ball and we play it safe instead of bombing it down the field
I guarantee you Sanchez hates: Screen plays, shotgun, etc. but schotty is finally learning that. how about he stops calling passes on 1st and 10. before Sanchez's fumble, I scream out "DON'T PASS THE BALL" and next thing you know Sanchez is dropping back. i can't stand schotty, he can't call a game.
I had to work today, and I forgot to set my DVR to record the game (which is looking like it was a good thing...lol) so I can't comment too much on the game. When I got home I was IMing my friend who watched the whole thing and we were talking about this very thing. Here are the receiving stats from the game: REC YDS AVG TD LG TGTS J. Cotchery 3 84 28.0 1 33 8 D. Keller 3 38 12.7 0 21 4 B. Edwards 1 10 10.0 0 10 5 T. Richardson 1 4 4.0 0 4 1 D. Clowney 0 0 0.0 0 0 1 S. Greene 0 0 0.0 0 0 1 T. Jones 0 0 0.0 0 0 1 So between Richardson, Greene, and Thomas Jones, they had all of three passes attempted to them? I know Leon was our best receiver out of the backfield, but damn, how hard is it to actually defend against our offense when you know the only people that are going to be getting thrown to are Edwards, Cotchery, and Keller? Our offensive scheme just seems so horrible most of the time.
Sanchez better learn to love 'em. The way the Jets are built and with a healthy LW the screen play is probably the strongest asset we'd have on offense.
The biggest thing that Sanchez needs to learn is that not every single play has to have a big payoff. If he gets out of trouble, he needs to take a look downfield, and if there is nothing open, toss the ball away. And by away, that does not mean 25 yards downfield into the waiting arms of the safety.
The 4th interception today was just maddening. He was outside the tackle box and under heavy pressure and deep in his own end. He could literally have just rifled the ball out of bounds ANYWHERE on that sideline and we'd have seen some signs of growth from him. The throw was terrible. It was a bad decision and poorly executed. You can't keep doing things like that and expect everybody to look at you the same. His decision making processes are poor at this point. Ryan needs to do something to shake that up and for the life of me I don't know what that is, because putting in Clemens for him is a recipe for disaster even if he plays much better than expected and looks like a decent QB. Look at the Cleveland Browns right now with Quinn, Anderson and company. That could easily be the Jets in a year if they screw up the decision tree on the QB's right now.
Thomas Jones does have a 28 yard reception on a screen play so he can do it. Just another case of Schotty out-thinking himself.
That's the problem with this guy...he is too smart for his own good. Just like dear old dad. The problem is dad could win in the regular season and just fuck up in the playoffs. Brian can't even get it right in the regular season. It's ok...every week this guy keeps writing his ticket out of town come January.
thomas jones can do it but not all the time, defense are smart with LEON even a busted screen play with his elusivness can turn it into a big play. jones cant.
that's the wrong thinking. The Jets need to build around the QB, not the other way around. that's how you kill the growth of this kid.
