If Leon doesn't get a starting job with the Jets, he's going to get a starting job with some other team. Probably the Patriots.
Nobody suggested that Leon should be pounded down the middle all day. Further, the Jets also have their bruiser running backs. I don't see what point you're making other than what's already obvious.
But a featured back has to be able to pound it down the middle, TJ does. If not, whats the point of them being the starter. I doubt we would give it to green on 1-10.
Why does a featured back have to be able to pound it down the middle? "Feature" means focus, highlight, or special attraction... in football, a "feature" back would be the "star" running back... what exactly does any of that have to do with running style? If you've got two guys with two different talent sets, wouldn't you agree that the logical thing to do is to use each back to their talent set? Why does it matter who the "feature" back is when determining whose going to be north/south running? And why would Greene (if that's even who you're referring to) not get a carry on 1 and 10? This whole post makes absolutely zero sense.
they'd win 4 more SBs with him and that offense. and they could have the 24th best offense, like when Mangini was running the show in 05 and they lost to Jake Plummer.
Tiki Barber was a workhorse for the giants after they spit up with Ron Dayne. If Leon can become as good of player as Tiki Barber he got ourselves a great everydown back
if you compared their 1st 3 years in the league, and then projected the rest of their careers using the explosion that Barber had with his carries and numbers as the mathematical guide (yes its an odd formula but use it) you'd think that Leon is about to become a HOFer while Barber was going to become some sort of JAG RB.
If you're talking about complete product, then Leon may have a way to go to catch up to Tiki. If you're talking about explosiveness, ability to change the game - Leon is already head and shoulders above Tiki's best day.
Tiki Barber's best day was 276 yards. 203 rushing and 73 receiving. Most rushing yards in a game was 234.
friends of mine had tickets, i was there. The atmosphere was incredible. i wish I could say the same for our team.
Great response, it made me smile! I guess you right. Anyway, you guys are naming running backs who were able to take the abuse. The list of running back who couldn't would be in the 1000's. I just don"t see why we would chance it, when we have the #1 runner in the afc on our team. and we are only paying him 900k. Leon is so much more effective being a change of pace back than as the starter. If he was meant to be a starter, then why hasn't it happened already? I would rather use him sparingly and get a few more years out of him. The last thing I want is another R Bush.
When was this? They stack up the line because we have no deep threat. I think TJ looks just fine in the games I watched.
this is a very good thread...the numbers dont lie when leon touches the ball, good things happen...hes proving he can even run between the tackles...if shonn greene lives up to rex's expectations having leon as the starter and shonn greene as the backup makes thomas jones expendable and able to shop around the league for a trade or draft picks to maybe get another established receiver...but in my opinion i feel were ok at receiver..i feel stuckey has alot to prove and cotchery we know is solid...we should really look into another OLB cuz the ghost isnt worth starting on a 3rd string defense...not having calvin pace for 4 games is gonna kill us..
not IMO. what happens if leon or greene gets injured. TJ becomes expendable when the team doesnt want to pay his gigantic roster bonus for next season and greene has proven he can be a good change of pace/red zone back. if anything this year is Greene's audition to be Leons rotation back for next year. THIS YEAR, in the 2nd half of games. we still need jones for this year no matter how many madden trades people want to propose. that being said ive been one of washingtons biggest supporters since the day he was drafted. anyone can see leon deserves at least 12+ carries depending on how the games going. other plays i would have him split out wide too. the guy is in the mold of brian westbrook, were just not using him enough. but jones needs to stay 1 more year so we can see exactly what we have in Greene.
I did start a thread about trading TJ, mostly to illustrate what little draft value that Jones has, also to illustrate how little of a future he has with the Jets. I think he's definitely going to be with the Jets for 2009, probably not past then. RBs his age don't garner a whole lot of interest in the trading market because runningbacks with his skillset that are 10 years younger just aren't that hard to find. He will probably be a Seahawk in 2010.
Bush has seasons of 155, 157, and 106 carries. That is not running him too much. He is just brittle. Leon has not missed time yet so using Bush as an example to go off is not a good one.
Brian Westbrook - Height: 5-10 Weight: 203 Tiki Barber - Height: 5-10 Weight: 205 Barry Sanders - Height: 5-8 Weight: 203 Maurice Jones Drew - Height: 5-7 Weight: 208 Leon Washington - Height: 5-8 Weight: 202 big enough, never injured, durable. Pay him and start him.
