He played the first 2 preseason games with an ankle injury, but he looked okay to me - for a rookie. He got a rib cartilage injury against the Ravens and Rex decided to rest him until the regular season. We'll see what he's got in limited action I figure, mostly short yardage and around the goal line. Rex was very high on his all offseason.
It doesn't really matter if Leon technically starts. It's more a question of whether he will get as many carries as he can physically handle over the course of the season. All signs point to that happening this year.
It doesn't matter who starts.......an long as Leon gets enough touches, that's the key. People getting on Jones? seriously, the dude scored what 15 Td's last season and was near the top of the conference in rushing? he's fine.......Leon is not an every down back anyway...if he becomes one, his explosiveness will be nullified. do you really want Leon in the backfield for pass protection, thats part of a runnig back's job too.
Jones will be riding off into the sunset at the end of this year anyway. I am sure he will get no more than half the snaps. Might as well use him up and wear him out before he goes.
He needs to get more touches, so he probably should start, Jones can come in and give them a change of pace...against the Giants when Jones was in the offense stalled, we started moving the ball when Leon came in...
if you look, Sanchez is always looking to throw it to Leon, especially on third down. Even if he is not the #1 back, there is a good chance Leon will lead the team in catches this season.
Is there any way you can support that statement: 'Leon is not an every down back' - I see it posted enough but it's always this flimsy one-line statement with no argument behind it.
Rex said he wanted to get him 300 touches this season. I want him involved more, but that is a lot of touches. Shone better be more durable than we have seen. T-Rich, and T-Jones will see plenty of action.
TJ is a better starting RB. Leon well get plenty of reps, not to mention special teams. I think you guys kid too much on TJ's abilities. TJ will have over 1000 yds rushing this year and will be productive in alll other categories.
I agree with starting Leon, he is the best offensive player, and seems to run even better between the tackles this year.
Starting is overrated for a RB, that just means he's in on first down. I'm all for mixing it up and getting Leon much more involved than Mangini did, which it looks like they're doing, but I don't care who starts.
Leon Washington's preseason stats Att:19 Avg Gain: 6.3 total yards: 119 Thomas Jones' preseason stats Att:29 Avg Gain: 2.1 total yards: 61 It seems Leon is fighting for more yardage...than Jones. I'd be comfortable giving Leon the starting job....he's obviously putting in the work and effort. Jones looks like a tree stump out there.
I don't think it matters who the starter is at RB because I believe for the Jets to truly be effective all three of the running backs need to get touches... Washington and Jones should both get about 20 touches per game with Greene squeezing in 5-10 depending on circumstances... that includes pass plays as well... but Washington should definitely get an equal load to Jones.
