Gase checks a lot of boxes for me 1. Offensive minded- his approach will be great for Darnold. Also I feel Offensive minded coaches with great DCs thrive better than Defensive minded coaches and great OCs because offensive coaches tend to get poached faster. 2. HC experience- He’s gone through his growing pains as a HC and likely won’t make similar mistakes. 3. Still young- He can grow with Darnold going forward. I honestly believe him and Darnold can be our Belichick and Brady. Obviously not as successful or dominate but I think we can consistently compete on the field with them. Also -Worked with Manning -Built relationships with quality coaches so I think he’ll build a good staff which is crucial. -Phins have played New England well recently from what I remember.
I want a sociopath as a head coach. seriously. someone who eats, breathes, and sleeps football. Someone who is so petty and meticulous that they'll yell at a player for running 1 yard off his designed route despite the team winning 42-0. Someone that looks ready to fight to the death with the Refs after a bad call. That describes Jim Harbaugh. I wonder if there are any other candidates like that (not named Josh McDaniels).
I think Tannehill was forced on Gase in Miami (ownership). JMO That's why I wouldn't put too much stock in what happened there. It made no sense for Tannenbaum-Gase to show Tannehill that kind of loyalty they didn't draft him. And more than likely he'll get another HC job soon. Gase would be a fit here, offensive coach, good with QBs, a modern coach, experienced took some lumps in Miami could be a much better coach in his second job with a different QB.
It's Tuesday two days after Bowles was fired. I haven't heard a whisper of Harbaugh-Jets or Gase-Jets.
I think it’s the fact that his most success as a head coach came with one of the top 3 QBs to ever play the game running the show for him. Then when he got the Lions job, they were disappointing. Megatron and Tate were both 1,000 yard receivers and Stafford was having very good to borderline great years but they peaked at the wildcard. I mean that’s basically Bowles in 2015 and we all know how we feel about that. He also had no RB or defense but it’s not exactly like he’s walking into a great situation here. Unless he came with the heir apparent to his job at OC and a star DC, it would be a heavy heavy pass for me.
I stand corrected then, i was under the impression that the GM should have a blueprint and others would help carry out that blueprint, including the VP of PP. Having different philosophies can hamper this brainstorming session. Where did you see the Chris preference?
The question with Caldwell is his age, the guy is 64 years old and the demand of the job is grueling. However his experience should offset the demands of the job as he is not OTJT like Bowles did. He’s not my first choice but I’m not against him being Jets HC versus some unknown.
It was reported that he felt coaching was the problem not personnel. The fact the jets gave up leads in the fourth quarter in games they were playing well for three quarters and ended up losing them were the nails in Bowles coffin.
In every big game Caldwell coached here in Detroit, the team failed. He had four years to fix/scheme in an average running game. Never happened and in fact, got worse under his tenure. Players do love them and most see him as a father figure. He comes across as a good man in every way. But Caldwell's in-game decision making and attention to detail leaves a lot to be desired. Detroit was a much better situational football team this year and it's not close.
I'd be more than happy to have Gase come on as the OC, but not as the HC. Wasn't at all impressed with what he put on the field in Miami, but he does know offense and has gotten some decent performances out of JAGs like Tannehill and Cutler, plus Manning apparently swears by the guy. The only certainty heading into this process, however, is that Christopher Johnson is going to screw it up. They keep talking about wanting consistency in the franchise. Well, that's the one constant they have. Terrible ownership.
Johnson is dead wrong if he feels it was only the coaching and not the personnel. It's clearly both. He's totally blind or Mac has him brainwashed. Either way, that's not good for any of us fans as this means he thinks we're going in the right direction under Mac. I have very little faith in this front office to make the right coaching hire and to build this roster correctly.
It's clear that neither Johnson knows what he's doing. The Jets aren't going anywhere other than the cellar of the AFC East under their "leadership". Pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the only way I'll see a Super Bowl appearance in my life is if the Johnsons sell the team.
Honest question, how is this clear? You're basing your opinion on rumors from sports writers with anonymous sources about potential coaches the Jets want to interview. I have an idea, how about you let Chris Johnson hire someone before you mark him as someone debilitating this franchise.
He's already screwed up the process by essentially repeating the Rex/Idzik debacle by not cleaning house and keeping a GM with a very spotty record over the past 4 years. A clean sweep was needed, as well as a new reporting structure for the coach and GM. Neither is happening (they've already stated the same reporting structure will remain). The new coach may end up succeeding in spite all of this, but he's not being put in a position to succeed by ownership.
I'm not a Caldwell fan. But having seen plenty of delusional Jets fans on this board, you're delusional.
