Dude, once you start hitting on the SPJ, it becomes addicting. I'm going Blackfishing tomorrow and I'm bring both a blackfish rod and a SPJ rod just in case I either limit out OR the blackfishing shuts down. You just don't know what will hit that jig when its dancing all over the place. I already have spent a few dollars on jigs and most likely over the winter may spend a few more for next year. Our season is about over up here I would say with the 1st Noreaster of the year. I'll be looking at a Cod trip in January if the water remains warm. +50F. Ocean Cat, JYG are some of the better jigs available at a decent price. Pink seems to be big up here although I did hit several Cod on the blue glow 220g up in Gloucester, MA.
Yeah, definitely more fun than soaking bait..... I always been partial to artificials / jigs but was using on a spinning rod. Inshore I only toss lures as well. (may go try and find some skinny water redfish once the sun warms us up) Pink striped, definitely the best here too (look like little beeliners (vermillion snapper) but I lost those with a quickness, gold seemed to be #2.... only had 2 left of the original 5 (and one of those had the assist hooks torn up by a cuda or king)... ordered 2 200G gram jigs as well, after dealing with that current. I'll check out the JYG jigs... they sell direct or anywhere else? Our season is about to be more selective due to weather.... and with the price of marine fuel, I'm about to be more selective too (got laid off from my main jig 3 weeks ago)... My buddy's dad used to refuse fuel $ from me, as he appreciated the help on the boat... well, I guess his retirement fund may be getting skinnier
Yes I have... Very effective pattern and the glow lasts perhaps the longest. I use the stryker style. I think you'll like those..
Went skinny water searching on the Gheenoe this afternoon...... fun day with my buddy, but not because we caught fish
Headed out in the AM. Already in jersey. 0630 boat. Hoping for some striper action along with the Tog.
Long cold hard day fishing today. Wish I had cancelled. Learned a few new items about Blackfishing I didn't know before so that's a plus. Also got more bites this trip than all my other trips. Only got one keeper but its not like I couldn't have had more. Opportunity was there, but experience wasn't. Live and learn. Hard running current all day long made jigging impossible. Cold today as well. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. I'm taking what I learned today forward and in '22, I'll be a much better Togger.
@Cman65 Next time you're in tackle direct, check this rod out for me..... price and specs seem too good to be true: https://www.tackledirect.com/ocean-...ti-pb66350a-pitch-black-conventional-rod.html
Just took a look at it. Looks like a rod that on paper can handle a wide range of weights. As you know, its all about recoil with SPJ rods. Looking at the specs, It might be a case where you get what you paid for. I do know there is next to no buzz over this brand on the netz... I can offer you a better option. I have 2 TR Elevate E-1's. Neither has been used and are rated 100-300g which should be right in your wheelhouse. I can let one of them go for $200 including shipping. The rods are acid wrapped and will have the case covers included. Let me know what you think as you usually fish in <200ft. yes?
You saw it in person? that was fast! I'd take you up on that, but I think the E-1 may be too light..... what line rating can they handle? This is the rod I'm using now (#3 yellow).... it's held up better than the Fin Nor Primal reel has https://johnnyjigs.com/products/con...-rod-by-anglers-choice?variant=39534647509091
I just emailed TR for the line information. At 1 gram per foot, I would think 100-300g should cover 100-300ft of water. Not sure if you fish deeper than that. When TR gets back to me, I'll relay the information to you. I do think the Elevate E1 would work for most of your applications although I wouldn't use it for deep dropping. If you're presently using "yellow", that's actually lighter than the Elevate's load ratings. 100->200 for the yellow vs. 100-300 for the Elevate. You're also gaining 6in of rod length as well as the Elevate is 6'-9" and your yellow is 6'-3". Both are acid wrapped and the Elevate is a 2pc rod.
Yeah, I was just thinking something that complements what I had, not just replace (I've only used it like 4 or 5 times I wont be using heavier jigs than that, but my concern is line weight. Ive been going with 40# as we usually fish structure, and need to yank the grouper from their lairs.... I actually considered that rod initially.... and I'm sure this is mental, but I'm not sure how I feel about a 2 piece rod
I had my issues with a 2pc rod initially until I actually bought up a 15# Cod up in Gloucester and that Gator Blue you saw in the pic. 2pc rods have come a long way. Especially the SPJ's. I use 20# test in 400ft for Goldens and BlueLines. Deeper water = lighter line. You can use 40# or you could go even lighter with 30#. Remember, its not the rod fighting the fish, its the reel.
Dang it.... I wish I got the email for this deal last week BEFORE I bought a bunch of jigs https://www.fsfgear.com/product/slo...jbwIAgeuUpACvwJ22pmihiNPlIeT5dOIKfoew=.QjFpqD
Helluva deal.. I'm tempted myself to get this package. The weight range is perfect for most offshore trips up here. They range between 150-250ft. EDIT: I got this deal. Plan on using it in January for Cod and Ling. Got some deep water trips planned for later in '22.
Items arrived today. Nice variety regarding weight. Cod season starts in January so I'll be using them as long as Mother Nature permits. Climate change actually does have some benefits as the weather hasn't gotten super cold and the water is still above 50F.
