Nice reel! I thought I had one of those off ebay, but someone snaked me last minute.... Yeah, I just spooled my new reel with 40# J-Braid. Alot of guys use 30# for the reasons you mentioned (esp in deeper water), but considering that you use the reel and NOT the rod to fight the fish with this style (or you'll prob bust the rod) I was afraid to go 30# and rocked up by a grouper or big snapper ;)

The rods are stupid expensive, so I did alot of reading / research, because I didnt want to spend $300++ on a rod for a style I've NEVER tried before (just been jigging with a spin outfit) and it's hard because local tackle shops have such limited selection of these and I'd really like to hold em in my hand. (that's where I did see the tsunami)... I think these Centaur rods will be a good economic compromise...... check ebay for jigs too.... it hurts to lose $15 jigs

Found a rod! Got it on Paypal just in case I don't like it I can return without any hassles... New Rod.GIF

Figured this would be a good starter rod. Gonna pair it with the Daiwa when it gets here. Got it in blue of course.

That's so funny. I ordered a fresh water jig rod from them last night (Amazon). They are highly rated. I got blue as well and even that didn't thrill me. The other colors are god awful.

Those other colors are indeed brutal. Went with the blue since that is my color and it had the highest range of weights it could utilize. Hopefully it will work as good as advertised. Just couldn't justify going bigger in cost for a rod I'm still learning how to use. I will one day master slow pitch jigging though. I think its gonna be huge in the US.

I use that technique in one if the reservoirs I fish. When they made the reservoir they basically just paid people to leave and then they went and flooded the area. Because of this there is a ton of structure at the bottom....rock walls, old roads and even some foundations. I'll pitch this jigs near the structure and usually I'll get a hit before it gets to the bottom. Not my favorite form of jigging for bass but in that one particular reservoir it works well.

Next week I'll be fishing freshwater in Missouri's Truman Reservoir. Probably will get down to Lake of the Ozarks too. I will try to use slow pitch as we do use jigs although much smaller in weight of course.

I just looked and saw Truman Reservoir has Walleye. I've always wanted to catch one and I hear they are fantastic eating. The reservoir I mentioned previously has Walleye butbill be damned if I can find them. Most guys go out at night for them.

Good luck on your trip! Sounds like a blast!

Tanx! Usually on my trips there I get mugged by something big and hungry. Last time it was a Gar hitting my Crappie rig. Using 6lb fluorocarbon line this time and I'll set the drag to about a pound or so. Gonna have to get used to freshwater. More Finesse and less power should be the ticket. Minnows and Jigs man. Rollin!

Can't see the rod... tiny pic.
Which brand is it? be vary of some of the "deals" out there ;)

Saltist is a good reel too. Almost got one of those once.... saltiga is high dollah (hence the ebay search). Have a friend that has that 2sp saltist 40H(?) for bottom fishing and it seems real nice.... high gear for jigging, then low gear if you hook into a stud...

Hoping to get my boat back in the water asap.... been hard getting parts (had to replace all the connections / sending unit coming from fuel tank )
But we're having a week long solid onshore wind.... could blow in some deep water pelagics close in for a little bit. makes for a short window for little boat guys like me to get after them in NE FL.....Would love to nab a sailfish from my sailfish :).... maybe run-over a lost wahoo. (king mackerel are always rt off the beach in summer though)

I actually read some legit positive reviews on those.... and I like the specs (I was tempted to go heavier with mine).... but I won't lie, their goofy marketing and little kid colors had me thinking they were a gimmick

Yeah me too. Took a chance because the price was right. Looks like they can hang though. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I've read a lot of great reviews but I'm going to return mine because I think it won't fit my purpose. I didn't realize that the colors represented different powers/jig weights. The heaviest jig I this is 42 grams and I think the blue rod will be too much. That's what I get for drunk shopping
