ehhh.... not really. Loaded up on sunday to the point where I gave a good amount of fish amount to family/friends.... Wed was frustrating, but the reality is that we were doing something you really shouldnt do in a boat that size, esp this time of year (we came in with just enough gas....) . It was my buddy's boat and he got tunnel vision on what he wanted to do despite some of my suggestions to "save the day".... He's anti fishing public numbers and we couldve at least trolled up some king mackerel (or cobes) but he wasnt havent it. (truth revealed, he stayed up too late the night before... I was kinda pissed bout that) I do take some blame for losing that cobe.... maybe I couldve backed down on the drag, but I was on the spinning rod so.... he was at least 40lbs+ Kayak fishing in the ocean is ALWAYS a crapshoot.... plus I only gave it a couple of hours. Didnt have alot of gas in my tank, plus wanted to come in before seabreeze / T-storms.really only went because looking at forecast, it would be my last chance for awhile .... I still havent landed a big mackerel from the yak yet, but I'm learning from my mistakes.... but man, felt like crossfit marathon draggin that shit back over the dunes in 90 degree heat after paddling a couple of hrs. a few beers later I was TKO'd and passed on a killer 4th party
Sunday.... rough estimate. 25 beeliners (vermillion snapper)... smaller ones than last time. 1 Amberjack. 1 big almaco jack, maybe 8 Mangrove snapper (mangos) with a few nice ones), several triggers (10?), a 10# mahi (lost another boatside that ate through the leader) a BIG bonita that kicked my ass on the spinning rod, and a bunch of smaller bullshit that went back....not really sure. we started hackin em up as soon as we got to the dock 5 on the boat, but basically 3 of us fishing (we had my buddy's 8 year old son, and his father (boat owner) who wasnt feeling that hot and mostly just wanted to take his boat out (1st time on the water after surgery a few months ago)
Might do some sweetwater fishing tomorrow. Gonna start up the boat today and make sure everything is good.
so how did that go? I havent fished freshwater (sans 20 minutes in a catfish pond) in prob 25 years...... when I was a lil' guy I used to bass fish in the south florida canals...... helped kept me out of trouble... well less trouble
Tell your wife the 2nd boat will end up costing more in the long run.... btw.... had to turn down an offshore invite today for "snapper season" because I couldnt get someone to cover my shift tonight Hopefully heading out with another buddy tomm.... but the "pros" went today
Just saw this on FS..... very cool piece on my town... pretty cool seeing a bunch of peeps I know.... and some of those docks are a few miles south of my house
Yeah a friend of mine is a mate on different fishing boats, has his captain lic. but hasn't found a boat yet. But every other day it's picture from the Keys, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, just from one tourney to the next. I was never a good fisherman but I never turned down a chance to go.
Went out yesterday and headed towards Flagler to hopefully get away from some of the chaos.... It was still a bit of a shit-show. We got a "limit" of one snapper a piece (not very big... maybe 20") and I did get a pretty good size Amberjack (25#?) and one beeliner.... thats about it. (hd a shot a something big, but the circle hook didnt set. Seas were super flat and weather was nice so......
Thanks.... yeah a bit better than the one last weekend. Friday midday I was leaving the beach after giving a surf lesson, and my buddy texted me "we're blowin' it, we should be getting some mules!" HUH? "Grab some ice and beer and head over" (He's a charter captn but wanted nothing to do with snapper weekend chaos (plus a kingfish tourney going on)..... rare that he gets to go "fun fishing" these days Prob left the ramp close to 2.... then spent too much time finding live bait (bunker), Finally got a net full after running around and headed out 15 miles, while he was all skittish about the weather (T-storms)..... "fuck it dude, lets whack 2 fish and haul ass in.... sea breeze will hold the storms back as it has all week... worst case, this boat hauls ass" (he was skeptical and nervous) Pull up to his number and we dropped livies down on big spinners..... we both hook up and get HOUSED! Knife to a gun fight and we both broke off 50# braid..... A few more drops later (and releasing some smaller fish) we put 2 nice snaps in the box... His wife's car was in the shop and he was supposed to pick her up from work.... "Hey, can you Uber home?" then we went to a spot closer inshore and put out a spread of livies with the intent of finding some cobia, and hooked up a smallish king mackerel.... then got another (actually happy they were small 10#? those are the better ones to eat (taste) and not loaded with mercury No cobia, so we ran in to not test fate with the weather...... got back to the house a little after his wife got home from work, cleaned the boat and went to dinner.... "Happy Hour Snappers"
