As it turns out, the trip was cancelled anyway due to high winds and seas. I got my reservations pushed out and I learned a valuable lesson. April is too early to plan offshore trips as the weather patterns haven't settled in yet and still in transition from winter. From now on, Mid May to November is my season. MAYBE December if I hear stupendous reports of fish throwing themselves in the boat.

According to Accuweather and CBG, it looks like I'll be postponing the trip until later this season. Weather patterns this year trending towards wet weekends. I wonder how much of this is Climate change as I don't remember it raining every single weekend. Good thing the people on The Voyager are understanding and will refund the cash or let me postpone the trip indefinetly. Maybe perhaps even as far into the future as Sept. or Oct.

This year so far has been a washout. I'm hoping the pattern changes fairly soon. Sea Bass opens on May 15th. Most of the boats not fishing for Stripers will switch from Ling/Cod to Sea Bass.

I'd rather catch a big striper than sea-bass any day ;)

From the sporting POV, I agree. However, sitting down to broiled Sea Bass in garlic butter is a feast! I was hoping to get in on the Cod run this spring but looks like I'll have to wait for the Block Island trips this summer.

Ha... Striper is pretty damn good though (maybe just cause we cant catch them).... plus one solid striper = ten + sea bass ;)

If I get one this year, I'll probably smoke it. Get it cut into steaks instead of filets.

Just got back this morning from the trip and what a trip it was. The Lord was nice enough to open a window for us to fish all day Saturday as it rained after nightfall all the way back to Pt. Pleasant beach. We had tough going early on as high gusts big swells and a misty rain made it challenging. Current was so strong that at one point, we had to use 4lb sinkers! Fortunately, that only lasted a few hours!!
We were fishing in 500-800ft for the most part. Capt. moved the boat around as to not fish out one particular set of numbers. Used both electric reels too and I was surprised to see so many electrics on the boat so yeah Stinky, they're gaining in popularity. One guy actually had a Tanacom 1000.. Huge reel powered by a 12V car battery! Thing was a beast.
Anyway, once the current and the waves settled down, the fish got hungry. Nice Golden Tilefish for the most part. The sun came out and so did the fish. I nailed 7 with a bag limit of 8 so it was a good day for me. For those that weren't so lucky, the crew made sure everyone got home with some fish as the fare was $400! By the end of the trip, I was sore! Felt like I was Bluefishing for 2 days straight.
So I can now add Tilefishing and Deep Drop to my fishing resume! Here's some pics... Ocean 1.jpg
