Ehhh, not necessarily. Dark colors for low light conditions, lighter ones for midday (that can reflect sunlight).... I usually just get "match the hatch" colors (ones that look real)
Blackfins did like the flying fish and sardine looking ones I have.

Those lures can be stupid expensive, but if you shop around the web you can find deals...

Just heard from the Capt. of the Jamaica II. We'll be fishing in 150-250ft so looks like a trip to the Mudhole. Cod and Ling should be flying over the rails. I changed my mind about bringing an SPJ rod as the Blues have arrived. I changed out my SPJ jigs to a gold color to mimic the bunker they're chasing.

I'd think you'd want speed jigs on a spinner for those yellow eyed piranahs?

bluefins showing up at the mudhole yet? ;)

Haven't heard anything yet. Hit a few Blues using SPJ gear last year. I'll pack a few speed jigs in gold/silver just in case the others don't work.

You fish guys might be interested in taking a look at this Youtube clip. Same guy also has one from the day before taken a bit farther east.

Great White Less than a Mile from Shinnecock Inlet- Southampton, NY - YouTube

The back story: Humpback whale carcass found in Shinnecock Bay off Long Island - CBS New York (cbsnews.com)

Two known trackable great whites are in the area, both in the nine foot range - Jekyll and Anne Bonny; you wonder how many more are around that are not being tracked: OCEARCH Shark Tracker

The Ocearch site / guys are cool.... about ten years ago I had some friends that got to join them when they brought the ship to Jacksonville. The theory is the Whites follow the Right Whale migration in the winter time.... they hooked into one (but didn't land / tag it) that my buddy said would cause total panic given its proximity to the beach if the news was released.

random: 2 weeks ago, I came in from surfing and there were lots of shells, so I looked down, and right at my feet, was a very intact fossilized GW tooth. Not a JAWS size one, but perfect condition with the serrated edgeds still intact

Found another GW tooth this morning.... similar size but looks like it's been tumbling around the ocean for quite some time

Local news says Jekyll is in the area of Quogue now, about five miles west of Shinnecock Inlet making him the prime suspect for the star of the video.

TackleDirect has Stradics 30% off (not sure whats left) so I got a 3000 .... and I did NOT need another inshore reel. lol

They have some 5000s that are tempting but I have a Quantum Boca 50 that I've only used a couple of times.

I've officially banned myself from buying any new gear before I sell some of my unused old gear first. :) Headed out this weekend for a red hot Black Sea Bass bite happening. Oh yeah, I did get my last spinning reel for surf/beach fishing. Penn Slammer IV 6500 DV (stainless steel model)

haha smart man. I need to do the same... but let me know what you're selling. I know a bunch of younger guys getting the offshore bug and I may be able to find them some new homes

I may headed up there next week if stars align.... so seabass season wide open? may try and get on some on my brother's boat if the ocean's flat... and hopefully a bluefin tuna ;)

By the time you get here, it will be Fluke season. Blues are starting to rampage as well so it should be fun both inshore and offshore. I got several trips planned for June and July. Gloucester, MA for Pollock, Haddock, Cusk and other deep water northern critters off Jeffreys ledge and other legendary offshore spots. This weekend is Black Sea Bass and in July? 2 day Golden Tile. :)

They should still be in the sound by the time you get here. I would bring some lighter gear and go for a doormat fluke in the double digit range. Porgys might be around too inshore. You'll hit some BSB's but they'll have to go back since 6/19 is the last day until Fall. I think they'll let you keep one over the summer. Same for Tog I think. Check with the locals as you'll be in NY waters and not Jersey.

    hmm ok.
I know he has plenty of light tackle (and some medium tackle I've given him) so we'll see what happens. Havent done well coordinating work schedules, weather and the most over paid team in baseball....
