https://ftw.usatoday.com/2022/07/watch-fisherman-loses-huge-king-mackerel-to-bulll-shark Couple of things here. 1. That's an awful way to lose a really nice fish 2. If I was in my kayak and had that happen next to me, I'd probably pass out with fright. I am terrified if sharks and that was one big Bull. Fuck that.
Yeah, thats why I troll artificials instead of livebait from the yak when I take it in the ocean...... unfortunately I've still caught a few solid sharks (5-6' ish)
I like when the guy fishing yelled, "Get the shark away from it!" What was his buddy supposed to do. Jump in and wrangle it?
It's Not super fun trying to pull treble hooks out of a sharks mouth while sitting in a kayak a mile off the beach... If it wasnt a brand new Yo-zuri deep diver that I just pulled from the box I wouldve just cut it off
Tried to go flood tide sight fishing last night in a friend's gheenoe...... then some super sketchy FL T-storms made an appearance
This should get you guys fired up: https://www.onthewater.com/fishing-reports/2022/07/long-island-fishing-report-july-14-2022
Well, my summer fishing season resumes this Saturday with a full day bottom trip for Ling (unlimited) and Sea Bass (2). With Blues marauding, Fluke jumping clam baits and Stripers just hanging around, I'm looking forward to this trip as it will be a light tackle only for me. 100-300g SPJ gear and a ML bait rod and I should be good all day. Even talked Wifey into coming which of course means she'll kick my ass like she always does. #FillinDaBox
I generally try to avoid a few days after a fullmoon.... but I think the bite will be better saturday than sunday, and super flat. Go get um tiger
As it turns out, it wasn't a bad day at all. Near perfect weather made a sporadic bite feel better. There has been a change for the worse as the Ling fishery is plummeting and nowhere near 2021 levels. A case of overharvesting as has already been seen in the waters with Weakfish, Blues, Porgys, Blackfish and several others. There's no size or bag limit on Ling and its finally taking its toll as Summer Flounder aka: Fluke now has an 18"min size limit along with a 3 fish bag count. More fisherman are turning to Ling and the population is starting to bend to the pressure.. All in all, We did put together a decent catch.
Ling are a cousin to Cod and mostly a hot summer, muddy bottom fish. I think of them as Saltwater Catfish as they share the body type, live in the mud and have whiskers. They're gonna have to bring some kind of conservation program to the Ling fishery or they will simply be finished as a viable fishery. The commercial netters usually get their share of Fluke, Sea Bass and they also own the right politicians and the bigger their catch is, the smaller the real recreational catch becomes.
This is my typical bait bottomfishing rig.. Shimano Terez 7ft ML conventional rod w/Torium 14 reel and power handle, 20# test Momoi 8 strand braid, 30# Flourocarbon leader, 4/0 circle hooks from mid summer to Nov.
I saw a replayed telecast of the St. Lawrence tourney and this guy's awesome performance. Taku Ito also seems like a cool dude too.
I've caught two in my life and I bass fish, lol. They fight like hell. I don't really target them though. There are some great smallmouth lakes in NY too.
Heading out tomorrow morning in my kayak to do some striper fishing in Narragansett Bay with my father-in-law. Should be a learning experience.
