That's BS fostered by ESPN & Co. to accomodate the owners union. And it worked with the TO trade. But it's bull and a double-standard, and the 49ers got raped. If the Falcons want to challenge for a SB trophy, they need to stop cheaping it up like they've been doing for years.
the last time we traded away our 1st round pick for a player we got pearless Price and the bills then used our pick on Willis McGahee and our GM got fired a year later. Players that demand as much money as Abraham rarely ever get traded for middle to high 1st round picks.
Hindsight is 20/20. When the contract was offered, Abraham was coming off an injury riddled season, and Ellis was coming off an All-Pro caliber season. There was no reason to actually offer Abraham MORE than what would be offered to Ellis.
Sure why not. Ask yourself this, why weren't NFL teams all over Edge and Alexander? Because money is a huge factor in the nfl. If "losing" Abraham frees up the money to sign some stud FA, which it does (we'll see if the jets choose to or can use that money to do so this year or next), then what did we really "lose"? Its really no different than other sports. Knicks traded a cup of coffee for Francis and I and most of the known world think it was a huge mistake.
Comparing Price and Abraham is not valid. Price was a one year wonder. JAbe has been doing it for five years. I'd also prefer that the Jets get nothing for JAbe than just a 2 (as crazy as that sounds). In negotiating, you have to be trusted that you mean what you say and you say what you mean. To cave for a 2 after all this would undermine the Jets' FO's credibility going forward.
still not fair?wow you'd really be playing hardball if u were the gm eh??what would you say is fair value?
and great post by the way, i really like what i'm hearing from u, this is giving me an idea on how our jets FO will be for awhile and i'm likin what i'm thinkin
15 and a player or their third would be what was once considered fair, but with the idiot contracts that are given out by owners not unlike Daniel Snyder, a lot of teams are getting royally screwed on trade value. It's at least what we would get if he was a less-developed RFA - and not a Pro Bowl player in his prime.
jets deserve more than a 2nd round pick for abraham. maybe not the 15th pick in the draft but close to it. if the falcons really want abe then they'll have to make a sacrifice cuz its either ATL's 1st or SEA's 1st. if ATL would throw in a player we needed (i.e. duckett or something) then I think 2nd rounder and that is doable.
But it's the same hindsight that makes the Jet treatment of Abraham appear unfair. The hindsight of 5 years makes it clear which DE deserved the contract and which didn't. I would be much happier now if the Jets had Abe locked up and were shopping Ellis around.
For a cap guy that's not an entirely fair analysis. If you get Mangold and have enough money left over to sign a good FA that you wouldn't if you kept Abe it might be a great deal.
