He won't be the playmaker Jamal Adams is, but I think Ashtyn Davis is going to be a good player. If not this season, then certainly next year. The Cal defense was well coached and didn't miss assignments very often last year. It's tough to key in on everyone (Evan Weaver was their best player but a poor NFL talent IMO), but every time I watched them their entire defense was flying around hitting people. It's nice to have impact safeties, but you really just need safeties that don't screw things up and let people behind them. It's why Marcus Maye is such a solid player. I always make the comparison but I think it's true early on. He's a lite version of Devin McCourty. Unfortunately he has much worse ball skills or else he'd be a top 5 player. But we played a lot of single high and don't give up big plays when he's healthy because he doesn't let anyone behind him. That's tough to do as the lone high safety.
Not good. We’ve failed Sam so badly in the WR department that losing a fringe NFL player is a big deal.
https://nypost.com/2020/08/16/jets-love-what-they-are-seeing-in-mekhi-becton/ Jets love what they are seeing in Mekhi Becton By Brian Costello August 16, 2020 | 11:11pm Jets first-round pick Mekhi Becton is already impressing his coaches. Jets coach Adam Gase was asked Sunday if Becton looks confused at all as he starts his NFL career. The learning curve for rookies can be a steep one. “No, not even close. It’s funny, he looks like he’s been doing this for a minute,” Gase said. “It looks very natural for him. I’m like you guys, anytime a rookie gets plugged into that starting offensive line, we all know it’s a lot, and especially going against the defense, our defense every day you’re getting a lot of different looks. He looks comfortable to me. And he’s not making mistakes. I’ve been extremely impressed by how he’s operating as far as his knowledge of football, how he’s retaining things, acquiring the information, recalling it, and then at the same time executing, playing fast. He’s doing a really good job.” The Jets are hoping Becton can be their starting left tackle for the next decade after drafting him No. 11 overall out of Louisville. At 6-foot-7 and 370 pounds, Becton is an imposing figure on the field. He is also showing he is a quick learner, too. WR Breshad Perriman had high praise for QB Sam Darnold after their first few practices together. “I feel like Sam is great,” Perriman said. “His throwing ability is crazy. I love the way he throws the ball. The touch he has on the ball is unreal. It’s so receiver friendly. Just his personality and the way he’s able to take control of the room and the offense and the team is just crazy. Him being reserved and laid back and still having that authority when it’s time to go out there and let the bullets fly, he can take control of the room very easily. Him as a quarterback, man, it’s a receiver’s dream.” The Jets signed Perriman as a free agent this offseason.
Its certainly not great news with Vyncent Smith but it's a month of lost time, not the whole year. And even if it ends up being longer, this ain't Jerry Rice we're losing. Not impossible for someone to step up and replace his whole 17 receptions he caught in 2019. Training camp is always hold your breath time when it comes to injuries. Saw on the FoxSports ticker today multiple players lost for the year around the league already.
This is now the second guy to praise Darnold on his touch and throwing ability. Really hoping we see a huge year for Sam. I feel like that is brewing
He likely will not be ruled out for the whole year just yet. Could be an IR-DFR candidate, depends on if anyone more important goes down.
We have but we also built the line. and have a lot of money/picks next year to get him some good weapons. It's better for him to have time and nobody get open and he can dump it to bell or throw away, then to have him murdered in 1 second on every play but have good WRs. you can only address so many holes a year. With that said, let us not forget mark as a rookie had the amazing WR group of cochery, clowney, and stuckey.
It's still 1. Perriman 2. Mims 3. Crowder 4. Hogan 5. Berrios at the moment. Plus Herndon and Griffin are capable TE's and Bell and Gore in the backfield is pretty good. They solidified the offensive line and Sam does have some targets. They have cap space too if Douglas becomes too concerned about lack of WR depth.
Mims can't even get on the practice field and he's a rookie... bad combo. I don't think we're going to be able to rely on him too much. So in reality, right now we are looking at: 1. Perriman - played all 16 games once and was the definition of pedestrian until the end of last season. I really like the signing, but I also thought we'd go after Lamb or Jeudy. 2. Crowder - love the guy, but he's a slot receiver. 3. Hogan - missed half of last season, he's 31, he's a journeyman at best. 4. Berrios - need I say more? 5. Jeff Smith - I mean.... No matter how you slice it, that's a really bad WR group. Sure the OL might give Sam some more time but who the hell is he going to throw to? Herndon is going to be a huge component and hopefully our offensive genius head coach can figure out a way to get the best pass-catching RB we've seen in the last decade involved running some routes.
Yeah, it is not great, but Douglas could only do so much. People point out losing Robby, but I don't think he was anything special. Perriman will fill in fine. The problem is the WR corp was not great last year either. So, to me, it is better than it was, especially if Herndon stays healthy and Mims is able to do anything, but they still need to make big upgrades in 2021 and I am pretty sure they will.
I blame robby more on mac TBH. he should have extended robby over enunwa. I said it back then as well.
So what's Fant doing if Becton starts on the left side? Moving to the right? And Perriman = Robby. I can understand ppl wanting WR to be addressed more in the draft or FA but ppl acting like Robby fueled this offense is just insane
