The real problem is that most teams - especially the Jets - seem to think that a highly drafted QB is "plug and play" in whatever system they use. QB is the most complex position in team sports, and much of that complexity comes from the particular system a team uses. In rare cases you find a close match between a college QB and a team's system, or that team decides to build their system around the QB. If neither of those things happen, it's difficult, if not impossible for a young QB to make the leap and succeed. The Jets are finally doing now what they should've done 3 years ago. We'll see if it works out, or if it's "too little too late".
what are the Jets doing now with the QB position that is different than 3 years ago? They traded for Rodgers, I guess that is different
You can’t really just erase several years and deprogram/reprogram a QB which is what makes it such a long shot. I agree though for the most part. But I will say - it is very hard for coaches and coordinators to try to match to a players skills and mindset at the position. The owners have no problem continually lightening training camp and restricted organizations from having mandatory workouts when they negotiate the CBA because they don’t give up any money. It’s also hard for the coaches and coordinators, because they have to have a playbook. It’s not like they build it throughout training camp. A lot of coaches are the gestapo about their system though and that’s irritating.
Yes, those are very difficult things to overcome. That said, given the critical importance of having a FQB you would think teams would figure out a way to overcome them. I think one of the consistent obstacles is the last point you made: coaches are control freaks. It's why they've gone from allowing QBs to call the plays as was common in the Sixties, to having headsets in helmets. IMO it's one of the worst aspects of "progress" in the game. In any case, what the Jets have done to their QBs over the years, most recently and most egregiously with Darnold and Wilson, is actually try to change the way they play the game entirely from what they did in college and from what they were good at. And having so obviously failed doing that with Darnold, and having promised on Draft Night that "We're not asking you to carry the team. The team will carry you", only to have LaFleur do the opposite is professional malpractice. And I agree with you that after 2 years of that it's hard to expect Zach to overcome it. But given their hiring of Hackett and trading for Rodgers, and adding some more weapons, this is the best chance Zach will have of overcoming those odds.
Wasn't he a part of Bengals line when they had the worst line in the League? I know we want a solid Tackle and our depth sucks, but there does have to be some sort of standard.
100% JD cares more about his draft success than the success of the team which is why Moore and Mims are still on the team. Edit: I’ve been informed the 1st 2 WRs JD drafted are in fact, no longer on the team.
Wilson is going to overcome those odds on the bench? And I gotta say, if you are clinging to Hackett to rescue Wilson you are gonna be disappointed lol. Which young QB has Nathaniel Hackett ever developed successfully?
Yup…and since we’ve hired nothing but defensive coaches for so long (and yeah, I get Gase was an offensive coach but was he really??? He just rode Peyton’s coattails)…so it’s no surprise that we haven’t been able to develop a QB since I guess Pennington… It’s a huge reason why I really wanted Daboll when we hired Saleh…that’s a guy who had proven to be able to develop QB’s, and he proved it again by improving Daniel Jones But here we are…it should be no surprise that if you hire bad coaches, or even good defensive coaches, it’ll be hard to develop a rookie QB…it is what it is…
Back to OL…just saw that the Cardinals traded OT Jones for like peanuts (late round pick)…it’s good to see Brown back and if Brown can hold down the LT spot with Becton at RT we should be ok IF they can both stay healthy…
Josh Jones had a decent season last year starting at LT. Significantly better than any tackle we had. They gave up a 5th for 7th round pick swap. Looks like played well in preseason too, according to PFF. There was definitely an opportunity here, I think this guy is better than Turner and Max. There appear to have been multiple opportunities to add good College talent in the draft and guys who actually played well last year, but he stuck with folks who either didn't play or stunk last year and injury prone lesser talent Warren in the draft, who is now ... injured. JD better know what he is doing with these tackles.
I never got the Becton love from JD and some fans. Even looking at the 10 minutes he actually has played, he never looked that great. It almost seemed JD didn’t make moves to shore up the line because Becton was supposed to come back this year as if that was the solution to everything. Saleh himself said it during Hard Knocks - this team will go as far as the O line takes it. Right now, that’s not looking like very far
Nope...fans are like "Saleh is crazy to trust Becton after the last 2 years". But I don't think Saleh really has a choice, considering Becton was his boss' first ever draft pick.
This has turned out to be true! Fans don't always realize the pressure a HC is under to make his boss look good. Even if Saleh didn't want to put ANY eggs into the Mechi Becton basket, I'm certain he felt a little more than compelled to. Can you imagine if Saleh strolled into Joe's office and says "hey Boss Man, just a heads up, but I'm not playing your first ever draft pick, so you might wanna get another tackle in here. PRONTO!"
