There is no true elite QB in 2014 draft and they need skill players. You go QB 3rd round late or after. They need weapons -- no matter who you bring in the offense will be without Holmes/Winslow next season, Hill hasn't developed (him and QB play don't help that), and the OL needs work. So you give up multiple picks for a trade of a QB? Those picks are need way too much.
Exactly. The idea of trading draft picks for a QB is idiotic imo. Hopefully, Idzik is much smarter than that.
Like I said, I guess it's possible. Stranger things have definitely happened. But the failures of those 2 (specifically Flynn) whose more recent I think would scare GM's from giving a lot (no matter if it's money or draft picks) for a backup QB with little NFL game experience. But I guess it depends how much the GM likes Cousins
JI was in Seattle when they did the FLynn deal -- no one that closely associated with that flop of a deal is going to repeat it.
Agreed Like I said, I wouldnt mind giving up a 3rd, maybe even a 2nd depending on how well he finishes the season. But i'd go in a different direction if the price was really a 1st and 3rd or 1st and 4th. That's ridiculous IMO.
Trying to find the next Matt Schaub is not the answer to the Jets QB problems. You don't want to trade for a young QB who is going to turn out to be average because that will just set you back for a period of years. The answer is probably to acquire a real stopgap vet QB to compete next year and maybe take a flyer on a QB in the draft if the value is right at the pick. That and surrounding whoever is QB with enough real NFL talent that the offense doesn't sputter out every time somebody drops a pass or makes a bad throw. What's killing the Jets offense right now is that there's no consistency at all. Geno's not making enough good reads and throws, the receivers aren't getting open enough and the occasional drop just becomes a glaring weakness at that point. I could have strangled Holmes when he dropped the 1st down and the Jets drive petered out on the next play but the truth is that a lot more than that drop went wrong today and it was just another straw on the camel's back. I do think that the Jets need to do a serious evaluation of who is wildly overpaid for what the Jets are getting out of them and ditch as many of those guys as possible. It may hurt in the short run but we're dying the death of a thousand cuts with superstar salaries attached to JAG production.
I have no problem with that at all. Thats definitely another path the Jets can go down. Which is why I don't think it would be a terrible idea to see what Garrard has left in the tank this year. I know he hasnt played in 2 years but before the injury he was a pretty damn good QB. Not great or anything, but i'd take him on my team. Geno's not going to figure it out in two games. What he needs is a full off season and it least half a year of sitting and watching a real pro play the position. And I think we all know Simms is not the answer.
Garrard is a bad shit away from blowing his knee out again. Way to fragile...he is a banged up Brunell.
There will likely be jackshit out there in terms of veteran QBs. Cutler is staying in Chicago. Does anyone want to roll with Matt Schaub? Yikes. Mike Vick? No thanks. Josh Freeman? Fuck no. Mark Sanchez? Fuck outta here. It'll be another young guy next year. We need to get some fucking talent to develop someone.
Thats why we should find out this year. If he can't play anymore we'll most likely know it. And then we can move on.
Even if he has a good game who believes he can get through OTAs, camp, pre-season, and a season? he isn't an option.
Garrard can't play. His knee is bad and he's 35 years old and it isn't going to magically get better at this point. The Jets are going to need to go find a healthy vet who isn't highly prized by anybody (Vinny Testaverde circa 1998 is a perfect example) and who can take the football if the Jets need to give it to him. Vinny was brought in as a backup in case Glenn Foley, who was injury-prone, got hurt. Foley got banged up early and Parcells liked what he saw out of Vinny and essentially handed him the job. The problem is that you never know what you're getting out of that kind of signing until the guy hits the field and it's either there or it's not. Most guys put in Vinny's position in '98 just keep doing what got them on the market in the first place. It's tempting to say "gosh, look at Josh McCown, wouldn't he be great here next year?" Then you realize that he's played way over his head this year and the most likely thing that will happen if the Jets sign him is that he comes crashing back to earth, or at the age of 35 begins to show his age.
Like you said, whose that guy though? Why is Garrard here if he can't play? That I will never understand. Why do we sign guys to professional contracts who can't actually play for us on the field?
I really hope in 2014 we see an improved offense. It sickens me when I watch these teams like the Vikings just drop insane amount of points, or even Matt Flynn droping 34 points in a half. Just getting first downs is like a battle itself, and its been like this for years now. I seriously blame the lack of playmakers. I know the QB has been poor but when we had guys like L.T., Edwards, Holmes, Cotchery, we were able to at least get multiple game changing plays in single games.
He was brought in to be a mentor which was stupid. He was the Brunell -- a veteran who will never be a serious challenge but someone the young QB can talk to without feeling threatened. The guy is Sanchez...young, lost job in 2013 due to injury, injury was labrum not rotator cuff, has had a full year to rehab, has fire to start, wants to play in NY, is familiar with the offense, and has had success as a starter, and even injured this season seems more connected to the offensive skill players than Geno does on the sideline.
He's here because the Jets QB situation is very muddled at the moment. That muddle is going to have to be resolved next year by which point John Idzik will have had a year on the job to assess the talent and begin fixing the problem. The Jets QB situation was horrible before the draft and is only slightly improved at this point. There are too many conflicting threads running through the position at this point and resolving them all and moving forward is going to have to be a priority for the team. Next year may just be about chopping wood and getting the QB position prepped as all the other issues on offense are addressed. The temptation to go all out and try to get a blue-chip QB in the draft is there, but without a lot of luck that just leads to the third year in a row of an over-matched QB surrounded by too little talent to tread water let alone succeed.
AJ McCarron WILL be a successful NFL QB. He's comfortable in playing a NFL-style offense. He's very experienced. He's very intelligent. He won't be Peyton Manning elite but he will be consistently above-average year after year.
I know he was brought in to be a mentor, but I don't understand why he was signed to an NFL contract if he can't actually play the game. It's ridiculous. Sanchez is not the guy. You have to bring in somebody who gives you hope. Sanchez (while better then Geno) isn't any good. He doesnt signify any change. Just the same old crap. Shaun Hill wouldnt be a terrible idea, I wouldn't mind taking a shot on Cousins if the price was right either.
With his knee injury he might slide down to a spot you don't mind taking him. I think he can beat out Geno without too much of an issue.
You can't trade picks away with all the holes they have to fill. Sanchez is much better than Geno. In 2014 you are looking for a stop gap - nothing more with any veteran you sign. They aren't going to sign a franchise QB and can't dump picks to trade up to one of the top QBs. Improve skill all over the offense and tell Geno he has to win the job. You need someone in that can challenge him -- i think the best bet is Sanchez. Now the team might say it is time to move on or they might say he deserves a shot after winning the job in 2013.
