The Mets plan to be serious bidders for the services of John Lackey, writes David Lennon of Newsday. GM Omar Minaya reportedly "received a favorable first impression" from a meeting earlier this week with Lackey's agent, Steve Hilliard. Lennon points out that the Mets successfully zeroed in on free agent closer Francisco Rodriguez last offseason and secured his services for $37MM over three years, short of what some expected.

Here's a look at some of the other tidbits from David Lennon of Newsday brings us in this piece:

•If the Mets sign the versatile Chone Figgins, he would be placed in left field. Under that plan, Lennon says the Mets could be stuck with Luis Castillo. As one might expect, the expensive addition of Figgins would rule out outfielders Jason Bay and Matt Holliday.
•The Mets could be keeping tabs on Carlos Delgado as part of their plan to ink Figgins. The 37-year-old, if deemed healthy, would be a reasonably priced solution at first base.
•Although Minaya wouldn't rule out an extension for Jeff Francoeur, Lennon says it is not likely to happen.

While not a huge fan of going after Lackey he would be an good #2 and gives us arguabley the best 1, 2 in the NL. I just think his age and signs of breaking down make me want to shy aay from giving him big bucks.

I love Figgins but I would prefer to see them go after Crawford if they're planning on going after an OF...Crawford is younger much better non IF playing version of Figgins. I don't get the fascination with going after aging FA's from the Angels.... note to Omar, the reason why the Angels let these guys go is because they have shown that even though they spend the dough they always have guys in the minors that can play. How many playoff appearnces by them in this decade alone? It seems like more than the Mets have had in thier existence.

Crawfords $10 mil option was picked up by the Rays. He is pissed about it, but I doubt the Rays care enough to do anything about it. The new regime seems kinda awful.

That was my plan all along... throw him in right and then you move him to 1st this year. He would have played alot of 1st this year anyway but then you can allow a much older Delgado to walk. Our options at 1st minimal. That's another issue with Omar (as if he needs anymore) he never planned for down the road or injuries. It was always right now...nobody else is the Yankees and most teams can't go win now in baseball. It takes at least a year for most teams to come together and no team in baseball is ever really just one player away. Omar will have you believe the Mets are still just one player away.

True, when in fact we all know that they are one manager, one general manager, and one owner away.

He had a "handshake" deal with management to not exercise the option after his commitment to the team thru all the years of mediocrity. The ownership and FO group was OK with this because they would be getting the Type A picks, or could trade him before the deal expired.

Well, the new regime renegged on that promise, and Crawford is pissed, understandably.

They could have traded him in July, they had slim-to-nil chance of making the playoffs at that point. Now they are just going to be paying for a $10 million dollar half year rental. It hurts them in the end, as the trade market next season looks to be just as bad, save for 1 or 2 studs.

Its not 2009-2010 offseason. This isn't football/Hockey/basketball. It is 2010, 2009 is DEAD. Long DEAD.

I may be in the minority but i actually enjoyed the 99 season more than i enjoyed the 00 season. I think the team in 99 was better too. In 2000 we were just lucky we didn't have to go through the Braves to get to the Series, because back in those days, we just couldn't beat them.
