The Mets better not fucking make Ollie fatass Perez the 4th starter. Give him the 5th start and if he doesn't like it, make him earn his way back up.
The thing is who else do they have? They have done nothing to try to improve their pitching this year. The ownership and management have abandond this team. They made only one move (Jason Bay) and basically have been saying that everyone will be healthy. Like their track record gives us any reason to believe that. Hell, Reyes lost almost all last season to a minor leg strain. Where everybody else is back in 3 to 6 weeks he is gone for the year. I figure that by april he will have a hang nail and miss 12 weeks. The Putz trade last year really puts a bad taste in my mouth. They did that move knowing he was injured and told him to keep his mouth shut. So they knew they were not going to get anything out of him and didn't care. It was a move just to built hype about the new stadium, and sell season tickets. It had nothing to do with winning games.
We have the second highest pay roll in baseball behind the yankees. We are building through the organization and for once we are letting players develop instead of just throwing more money at free agents. Whether you like it or not Maine and Pelfrey will be here for a long time. Olli we have for a couple more years too and since hes making so much money he will be starting. John Niese has shown great improvement and I think will be ready to come up for good this year. He played great last year befor he got injured. Nieve too when we got him from the astros pitched great, I think he won his first 5 starts befor he too got injured. As for our 1st base situation we cant sign another expensive free agent when the organization likes Dan Murphy and wants him to stay up. We also have Ike Davis who is considered to be our future first basemen.
looks like someone is buying what the Mets are selling.........not me... they will suck. The only positive I take going into this season, is that this is the first season in a few where we actually expect them to suck, so maybe they'll surprise us.......but if they do well, it won't be because this organization had any reasonable plan in place this offseason, it will be pure luck (which based on last year, they are due some good fortune) by the way, pencil in a few W's for Wang against the Mets this season
I'm not going to cash in my chips simply because the Mets didn't sign Wang. Fangraphs has a great article on the critical nature of his release point to his success. If he struggles with that, he's a guy who throws flat, straight pitches and can't strike anyone out. Beyond that, the Mets are historically bad at signing people. I think we will see that with K-Rod this year. This team wasn't going to contend for a championship no matter who they signed, so I'll call this offseason a success simply because they didn't do anything to damage themselves long term. Besides trading Billy Wagner and two number one picks to the Boston Red Sox. UGGH! -X-
A pitcher who just had the worst year of his career signed with the worst pitching team in all of baseball which is pretty much the only team we had a winning record against last year. Mets fans dont think about anything they just spit out the same woe is me garbage. No wonder so many Jets fans are mets fans. Its all they know
I just do not see a half full glass of water with this team. They had a ton of injuries and did nothing to protect injuries from it killing them again. You do not need to spend alot to get talented backups. Wynn for the yanks is a good example of that and they did not have to trade a solid releiver to get him. Perez sucks, I do not have anything against maine and Palfrey but they should be our #4 and #5 starters not our #2 and #3 they just do not have the track record for it! As for Wong going to the nats. don't you think the 2 mil plus is chump change to take a chance on a guy who has 3 18 win seasons? You bring him in to compete and let the staff be better for competing. But the Mats did nothing! not a damm thing to address pitching.
Outside of John Lackey and Ben Sheets there wasn't really a pitcher who would have upgraded this team. Randy Wolf maybe, but what he signed for is an albatross. Marquis and company really aren't any better than Figueroa, and with Castillo at second base, none would be as good as Pelfrey. Besides that, this team isn't a playoff team, and this is a weak free agent year. They might be a playoff team if they signed lights out, inexplicably unsigned Kiko Calero and lights out infielder Felipe Lopez, but they haven't, so they're not. But no one else has either, so you can't really kill the Mets here, as I said earlier. I will take the kind of low risk medium to high reward signings the Mets have made as they didn't do anything to mortgage their future. I think people's expectations are unrealistic. -X-

Mets over under according to Mad Dog radio today...89 and a half. No offense mets fans but im thinking about betting the house on the under.
I'm a Mets fan who has been one of the more optimistic posters on this board among our fans...Anyone who takes the over is crazy. That's amazing. We don't have a second starter...I'd love to be proven wrong, BUT WE DON'T HAVE A SECOND STARTER. How do you win 90 games that way?
One year does not mean they protected their future. That is a long term strategy, Say 4 to 6 years because some players take longer to develop. and from what I read there is not much in our farm system anyway. The scouts like 4 to 5 players and they are all in single or double a and not ready to come up yet. Ike Davis and the catcher are the closest. But I do not think that is what is happening here. IMO They didn't make any moves because the ownership has reigned in Minaya. There was alot of quality players that signed for nothing that we could have gone after and improved this team but either Minaya or the owners did nothing. By the way I hate castillo defensively he has a no range and hurts our pitching. Ground ball outs are hits with him in there. I think he had a great year last year at the plate but hurt us with his glove.
Santana and Wright both say they are expecting World Series. I hope they're not as emotionally invested I am.
Kelvim Escobar is at the point where he can't even grip a baseball let alone throw one. Yikes. Something tells me he won't be ready even by September. I'd venture a guess that he didn't receive a physical, either.
Still... I can't help but feel a little bit excited for baseball season. It's my nature. I remember last year's Opening Day - pouring rain, but it wasn't canceled. I was sitting in some stupid shitty class with a douchebag professor who was making us watch an episode of friends. 10 minutes before first pitch, I just got up and left and raced to my car so I can listen on the radio.
