Fatcessa said today he believes Bay will be a Met within 48 hours... I don't know how I feel about this honestly.
It may pay dividends in the short term, but by the end of his contract the Mets will definitely regret this contract. The difference between Bay and Holliday is 100% worth the extra money it will take to sign the latter.
I know who I'd rather have and it's not the guy who hit .267 last year. We have enough guys who fail in big spots we don't need another. I'd take the lower power numbers and the better avg and walks over the guy with 36 dingers.
rumor: mets and bay in serious talks; 6 year deal possible, mets also in serious talks with reds about bronson arroyo and an unknown player............. please god be brandon phillips.................. old news i see lol
Bay's walk numbers have been better than Holliday's his entire career. The idea that Bay's numbers benefited so much from Fenway also doesn't add up, as his OPS+ in Pittsburgh was at least as good as his OPS+ in Fenway in 5 different seasons.
I don't know about a 6 year deal, but we defenitly need to bring him in. Also if the Mets get Phillips that would be fucking sick.
The Mets did sign this guy...sounds like K Rod has a new set up man. He is from Japan however I doubt he is a God like Shinjo. I much have prefered to see Yu Darvish as that name but word is Darvish has no intentions of coming to the majors. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/mets-sign-ryota-igarashi.html
from the outside looking in (since I can't honestly say I follow the Mets too closely, and I haven't kept fully up on Bay since I don't believe the Yankees to have any interest), it seems as though the Mets may be bidding against themselves with Bay. Last I heard, there were no other teams willing to offer 4 and the Mets had 5 on the table. Why bump it up to 6 for a 31 year old LFer?
First off you should thank your stars everyday your not a Mets fan and to answer your question. It's the Mets, the absolute ineptitude stems from the very top of the organization. It's almost like to be part of the organization you have to be a failure. I never thought I'd say this but I have more faith in the Jets to win a championship before the Mets. At least the Jets try, with the Mets you get failure that's covered up with even more failure.
4 years $65 million is all i want him to get. angels giants and mariners all are backing off. no need for us to up the ante. no need for a 5th.
this is reyes last year of his contract. so next year we have to pay up for him. next years class has Mauer Crawford and Beckett
The Mets are in a no win situation. The fans and media are basically forcing them to come away with either Bay or Holliday. Now they are basically in a bidding war with themselves over Bay because if they don't get him they are going to get slammed by everyone. They probably will get him but they will have to overpay drastically, Bay is a nice player but he is not an 18 mil a year player considering his age and definsive liabilities. I really can't believe how poorly the Mets are being run and how bad it has gotten for them. WHo has taught Minaya how to negotiate?
who cares what fans say. if we get arroyo and phillips while moving castillo, pagan can play left. http://www.baseballdigest.com/2009/12/17/metsreds-talk-bay-may-cost-six-years-more/ As I Tweeted last night, Sources indicate that the New York Mets may have to guarantee as many as six years in order to land free agent Jason Bay. Though the Daily News reported today that Mets are “don’t want to bid against themselves, it appears they are not, as one AL executive told Baseball Digest Wednesday night that “one, maybe two teams have contacted Bay in the last 24 hours to gauge his interest”. During those conversations, “preliminary offers may have been discussed”. Another source indicated that the deal is close to being finalized and could be announced by Friday, albeit for five years and a mutual option for the sixth year. According to the New York Post, The Mets upped their offer to five years on Wednesday. “Even five years is too much for any player in this market,” said one Mets insider. “I’m not sure we’ll be doing (six years) without some protection.” Mets / Reds Talk Arroyo-Plus The other target the Mets are said to be “intently focused” on is Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, who is the subject of “serious talks” with the Mets concerning the right-hander and possibly two other players. “If Mets just wanted (Bronson), the deal might have been done already,” said one baseball official familiar with the talks. “Mets are also discussing one, maybe two other players with Cincinnati.” He refused to disclose the names, but the early speculation in these parts is that the Mets may have a player under contract hat needs to be moved in order for the deal to be expanded. “This one could take awhile,” said the official. “Maybe even until pitchers and catchers report … there are a lot of moving parts in this thing.” I was also told that Ike Davis, Jenry Mejia and Wilmer Flores are “untouchable” in any deal, and that the Mets may have actually benefited from Fernando Martinez’s injuries the last few month. “Teams aren’t asking about him as much”, said the insider. “Omar really doesn’t want to trade him … so many people in this organization remain very high on Fernando, and maybe now he can just be left alone to develop into the hitter we all believe he can be.” To Molina, Mets Really Can Say Goodbye In what could be considered a shrewd move, the Mets have apparently told Bengie Molina that the only offer the Mets will present to the veteran catcher s a two-year deal. They’re also prepared to move forward if that offer is rejected. “We’re not going three years, that’s it,” said a member of the Mets front office. “That’s what I have been told.” The Mets believe that they can upgrade another position, and move forward with some combination of Omir Santos, Henry Blanco and Joosh Thole.
Let's say all these moves come to fruition and everything works out where they sign Bay to a reasonable length deal, trade for Arroyo and Phillips while moving Castillo somewhere, and maybe sign another starter. Is that a team that's going to challenge the Phillies for the division? I'm not so sure.
Reyes has a very affordable option which will be picked up next year. I don't care that people don't like his attitude and think he lacks grission. He is an obvious top 3-5 SS in the game and is young. You don't that give that up, even if it is for an aging Roy Halladay. Also, everyone relax a little. There is not one move that has been made this offseason that I would have wanted the Mets to make. Give 5 years @ 17M to an aging, injury prone pitcher who wasn't even that great the last 2 years? No thanks. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2009/12/17/1204299/the-mets-are-doomed-and-other
