Most people aren't fragile either. The human body can take an amazing amount of damage and well conditioned athletes more so. Im not saying it doesn't matter, but when you sign up to play professional football, you know what the risks are. It's the same as working in a nuclear facility. I'm not without sympathy but come on, when does common sense apply and we stop scapegoating everything? Study it and let the information just be. There's no destroying the NFL or football with this information. Someone will always want to play. This is just a case of stirring the pot with the highest profile. Boxers were mentioned in the Frontline special. I think the NFL is a target because it is the largest out of the 3 mentioned with roughly 1,700 players in its league. Its also very popular and most importantly it has a decent amount of reports of players going postal after retirement. Boxers and MMA not so much. IF it comes to that im sure a lot of attention for CTE will be directed at, for example, the UFC. And beside I dont remember the estimate but NFL players take a shit load of punishment a season. Boxers fight like what, 3-4x a year? Every play for a lineman is causing trauma IF the reports are correct.
Yeah but I think the difference is the intentional direct contact in any fighting sport. Not that it doesn't happen in the NFL, but certain positions can avoid it more. I think we both can agree when somebody is punching your face repeatedly runs a higher risk. That's a lot in a short amout of time. And there's no injury stoppages. That's the thing, they need to do more research and do it thoroughly not cover up the information like they supposedly did. The league needs to be on the cutting edge of preventative methods. It has the money to do so.

yea, you're right. I've been around that game I've known a lot of them. I never played football tho, don't know too many personally. to me football players don't have the same attitude about it.

I wrote a research paper on repetitive Traumatic brain injury (loose term but basically mild concussion and up) leading to long term neurodegenerative diseases in football players. Some of the things I read while doing research on CTE was pretty scary. Physical changes found in brains with CTE share many of the same characteristics as well known diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Dementia Pugilistica (punch drunk syndrome/boxers dementia). Behavior associated with these diseases are prevalent in football players current and retired. Depression, violence, thoughts of suicide to name a few.
In a prior lifetime I reviewed disability decisions for the Feds. I saw a dozen cases every year where people had suffered concussions that resulted in permanent mental changes i.e. cognitive loss or permanent mood change. If their demeanor was so drastically affected by just that one incident I wonder what percent of the general public is affected by "a bang here or there" in their lifetimes. Could be a scary number.

The NFL has more to fear from "Fan Duel" and "DraftKings" than anything else. Too much money always brings in the dark side of human nature. Wasn't that long ago that replacement Refs had guys on their fantasy teams. With Big money pots becoming the norm, the integrity of the game is indeed at stake.
