I love how he's too busy to watch or discuss the NBA all season but an expert on each team's tendencies once the playoffs start.
Today at 4:39, Francesser talked about how Ike Davis had jungle fever. It went something like this, "Ike had jungle feva. We don't really know how it manifests itself. We don't know how he got it . . . I mean he had valley feva..."
I had jungle feva in '91 before dating my wife. Don't tell her... Ike will snap out of it but will be glad for the experience ; )
Mike Francesa made this week's edition of "Say what?" in the Daily News. On page 72 of today's Daily News is a picture of Francesser and this quote written in proper English- "Someone brought up the jungle fever. We don't even know how that manifests itself."
I'm only workin' one week outta da whole summa. It's like I'm a teacha. Dat's kinda what I am anyway. I teach da unwashed masses about spawts.
Mike is a mess . . . . He thinks he is a LOT bigger then he is. . . . much like the NJ gov. just saying
someone called up today and suggested the yankees bunt more that really set tank off. He said you shouldn't bunt with 1st and 2nd and no out because then they'll just walk the next guy and get out of the inning with one pitch. So he thinks 1st and 2nd with no outs is better than bases loaded and one out. Got it. Now I'm not suggesting the Yankees should be bunting (except maybe with Ichiro), but his logic is terrible.
Funny thing is, it's not that different. You're talking about an increased run expectancy of .08 runs for 1st and 2nd, no one out. So while Francessa is incorrect, I'd say having such a hard-line position is the craziest part about it. I am not a fan of bunting, in general, but I think it depends on the situation.
This is actually a case of two wrongs canceling out - all things being equal the team at bat shouldn't bunt (since the expected runs drop .11 if it's successful, and [what is often ignored] drop much more if an out is obtained at third or second), but then the team in the field shouldn't intentionally walk the next batter (since that increases the expected runs by .18). Of course, things are never equal - decisions to bunt or intentionally walk someone depend crucially on the quality of the batter and the quality of the next hitters in the lineup, so these run expectancy charts are actually pretty useless - but it's funny that he's hating on one often-misused strategy (the sacrifice bunt) by arguing for another often-misused strategy (the intentional walk).
