Love the idea, love the player. Only problem is I think by the time the draft rolls around Flacco is at worst a second round pick, if not a first round pick. I can't see the Jets taking a QB that early again..
I like this kids arm. I like the fact that he puts the ball where it needs to be. I like his pocket presence and awareness, excellent footwork and he can throw on the run. The thing is, can it all translate to the NFL?
On a side note...It may be a bit different cirumstance but going into the 1979 season Bill Walsh had a young starting QB with Steve DeBerg. But he still drafted Joe Montana in the 3rd round. Sometimes you just have to pull the trigger and bring in another guy. I still don't see why we shouldn't bring in a guy like Flacco if we can.
Please tell us which QB would have looked great behind our OL last year without a true #1 WR and run game. Did you happen to notice how mortal BRADY looked in the face of a great SD passrush? What about P. Maning ? You honestly are critical of CLEMENS and he had NO protection and yet won 3 games that should have been 5 games( if his receivers held onto a few accurate passes). So please tell us which QB you are referring to can play without an OL and #1 receiver. We should IMMEDIATELY go out and get that player! Thanks for your input!
YOU explain to ME why Clemens looked awful against the Chiefs? We had a great running game, and he had time to throw. Yet looked terrible.
Nice post!!! We need to give Clemens an oppurtunity. I am not saying that he is the answer, but can't give any QB a true evaluation given the circumstances. That being said if we can steal a QB like Flacco, or Ainge mid to late round go for it. Depth can never hurt any team.
Why? Mangini was brought in and expected to turn this team around in 3 seasons, we are going into year 3, it's time. Especially considering we went to the playoffs only one year ago. This season sucked, but we had basically the same team as the 06 team. The difference was losing the close games as opposed to winning them. Fix up the lines and we can make a run.
Wait a minute, there were a few games where Chad started and did pretty good back there. So your saying Chad is more moble then Clements. Or the O-line played better because Chad was in there at QB. OH PLEASE. Clements just did not so it for me as much as I wanted him too. BUT I have waited to long and suffered to much to try to make sure the JETS have the right QB.
I caught the QB workouts also, GM. Ryan and Flacco certainly looked impressive, didn't they? Flacco is the size of Rothlisberger... really looks like a very confident kid. Of course, Ryan has all the "intangibles," so it looks like he'll go higher. But I'll tell you, Flacco is tempting if he falls to us... very confident, good leadership, the best arm of all of them and did a lot more while surrounded by a lot less. I wouldn't be horribly disappointed if we picked him up later on and made Clemens compete against him.
Flacco in the 4th, or maybe even 3rd, would be a good pickup in the draft. There's nothing wrong with having two good prospects in camp to compete for the job. Now that said, all of the older fans here probably remember what having Todd and Robinson on the roster together did in terms of dividing the Jet's clubhouse. It took Walt Michaels a year after Robinson left to get everything straightened out and it probably killed any chance that Todd would ever be the fully accepted leader of the Jets.
This sounds like the walls at the Jets complex are exercising management discretion. I don't think MT or EM were around 38 years ago. I think it's more like 2. Fan expectations or laments on the past should be focused on who we have to work with (team and CS) not the distant past. Hope springs eternal...even for Jets' fans.
Another problem with Flacco is he is going to need 2 years on the bench to catch up to NFL speed and offense. No one's knows what he will be under pressure which was one of the reasons Brady was a 6th rounder. He is a true athlete though, reminds me a little of Roethlesburger.
Yeah, I agree about Flacco. If we're to have an eye for the future, Chad (and I love him as much as the next guy) is finished as our starter. We just cannot go back to the dink and dunk every again. That being the case, all we've got to look forward to is Clemens and he's still, at best, an unknown. Bringing Flacco in here now is a great move, IMO, if we don't have to reach like hell for him. As far as creating a QB controversy, I don't think Tangini will or should worry about that. Richard Todd was his own worst enemy in many ways... tentative, never comfortable with any kind of pressure. He'd fold like a lawn chair and every DEF knew that. Flacco reminds me of... (Oh Boy... dare I say it?).. a young Vinnie Testaverde. Great physical specimen... looks durable... great confidence in himself... seems to have good leadership qualities. If he doesn't also display the propensity for INTs that Vinnie had, he'd give Clemens a real, honest-to-goodness run for the money for many years to come. Right now, Clemens pretty much knows that Chad is done. Right now, it's Clemens or basically return to the dink and dunk and I'm quite sure he knows we're not going there ever again, especially if we can find a decent long-range WR in the draft for Clemens' arm.
