The JETS won't take a LB in the first or second round because they need to solidify there Defensive and Offensive Line as well as secondary. So the best bet is the JETS will take another player from Ohio State named VERNON GHOLSTON the DE or even another Ohio State Buckeye CB Malcolm Jenkins before they take James Laurinaitis with there first pick.
DeSean Jackson IS a gamebreaker. He's scary in the return game, and he can beat most college corners deep. California had shaky quarterback play all season, and Coach Tedford likes to run the football also. For you to say that DeSean Jackson is NOT a playmaker is just stupid. He's not worth the pick that we have...but if he slips into the 2nd round, he would be a steal. Smaller, quicker receivers are more dangerous now that the illegal contact rule is used in the NFL. DeSean Jackson isn't a true number 1, but neither are Coles and Cotchery...Jackson wouldn't be a bad pick, but he wouldn't be a good pick either.
I can't believe how much of an expert you claim to be at the draft and how ridiculous it is that you would come at me with this crap. First of all, the guy said he should be our top pick. So away with your second paragraph. None of DeSean's numbers are impressive. He's tied for 77th in the nation in touchdowns. What exactly breaks a game open about that? 61st in catches, 100th in yards. Even if you were to be a jackass and say that "you're an idiot you're an idiot 2nd round at least!" how in the HELL do DeSean's numbers warrant anywhere close to the ~ 37th pick? He isn't near the top in any statistics for WRs, yet this Chansi Stuckey clone with no weight deserves a spot on our roster over any of the other possibilities that could actually fill real immediate holes? We're not exactly lacking in the return game, pal. I would rather draft help than some fast guy. Yeah, I can tell how the short WRs have the upperhand with Moss, TO, Andre Johnson, and Larry Fitz all among the league's elite. If we're going to pick a guy who hasn't been outstanding in college, I'd rather grab a guy like Urrutia in the 5th. I don't care if he runs the 40 in .15 seconds less than the next guy.
Let's say that the Jets were interested in laurinaitis, you still have Vilma. I guess you can try and trade him, but what do you think that we could get for him. Vilma is still a very capable athlete, and would hate to lose that. I was thinking out side the box, and thought I would try it out here. Let me know what you think. What about trying him out at Strong safety, and moving rhodes to Free? I am going to get some flack about this, but really think about it.
It's not a bad idea, but I don't think he'd be good enough in coverage to be effective. But it is a thought. The Bears should make this sort of move. Brian Urlacher moving to safety is a good idea. He played the position in college. He's had some back issues of late. To move to safety he'd have to shed some pounds, which would be good for his back. Then the Bears could move Lance Briggs inside.
Personally I think we should draft Sedrick (?) Ellis -- Give him Seans # and then I don't have to shell out for a new Jersey. J/k
1. I was simply ranking the receivers. I don't want the Jets to draft a wideout in the first round either, but I wouldn't be upset to see a player with so much POTENTIAL like Jackson taken with our second rounder. 2. I never "claimed" to be an expert at the draft. 3. Short receivers, Desean Jackson is 6'0, so I'll compare players in his size range, that have the "upper hand" - Chad Johnson, Marvin Harrison, Santana Moss, Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne, Derrick Mason, Torry Holt, Roddy White, Donald Driver, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, and Steve Smith. All of these wideouts around under 6'1 and they have played extremely well at some point in their careers...especially after the illegal contact rule was put into play. If Jackson runs a sub 4.4 40 at the combine, he'll go in the first round. 4. I don't care about how average his stats are this year. Tedford's offense this season at Cal has been horrible...the offensive coordinator was fired right after their last game. Jackson produced enough his sophomore season to show everyone that he has the ability to be a big play wideout. There's a reason why Lavelle Hawkins had such a good year -- Jackson was drawing double teams and defensive coordinators were focusing in on Jackson. Why? ...because he's dangerous when he gets the ball. 65 catches for 762 yards and 6 TDs isn't that mediocre. He averaged almost 12 yards a catch. If he's in the top 100 of each category, he's not doing that bad. Let's say each Div I-A school has 10 players with at least one catch. I think there are 118 I-A teams...that's 1180 players in college football that he has to compete with for these oh so important stats. He has more talent that at least 98% of those players. 5. We aren't lacking in the return game? I know that Leon Washington has been an awesome KICK returner, but he's out of place as a punt returner. Jackson averaged close to 12 yards per punt return and he won a game with a punt that he took back to the house. He'd be an instant upgrade over Washington as a punt returner. 6. Don't forget "pal", a lot of players...especially skill position players, are drafted based on their potential, and DeSean Jackson has a lot of it.
