Shonn Greene is the #1. If Leon's recovery progress is to be believed, he is the #2. #3 Does not really need to be a big name. The Cowboys seem to be doing well with Tashard Choice.
A back with Tashard Choice's skillset at a young age with fresh legs would be the ideal third runningback in rotation with Greene and Leon, as far as I am concerned.
He's the perfect 3rd back in a 3 back system, and he can step up on occasion when Barber has to sit out for a game or two. My point being: Tashard Choice is not a special player, but a guy with the right skill set. The Jets can find a player like Choice late in the draft or as a UDFA. There is no reason to start throwing around names like Westbrook, Tomlinson, or Lewis in this thread.
Jones does not have a future as a feature back on this team - not even in the immediate future - that job is solidly Shonn Greene's. Leon has been and always will be the #2, C.o.P. back on this team. The question now becomes: can Jones play the closer. He has one thing going against him right now from my POV: His ego: He's going this hard after a contract extension which tells me he still wants that starting role and because of this, I seriously doubt that he will accept the #3 role. However, his biggest drawback in my perception is the only thing that I cannot confirm. If Jones wants to play closer than he would probably be well suited for it: he rarely fumbles, he can still read the holes and with only having to face a tired defense in the 4th quarter the chances are less likely that the running lanes will collapse before Jones gets there. Unfortunately, if Jones takes this role then he will likely be asked to forfeit his roster bonus which is something I can all but guarantee he will not accept. This is why I think that Jones is a goner.
Send his old ass walking. He broke down, I know I'm repeating what most are saying...Youth backfield time and open up the passing game slightly.
As long as he brings along the beguiling Meagan Good*, TJ is welcome with open arms. * Once again, my lack of necessary posts precludes me from installing a worthwhile image herein to illustrate my point.
I really disagree with this. You can't be the #1 back until you've proven you can handle the wear and tear, and Greene has not proven that yet. In fact, he has given us signs that he might not be able to. I think the Jets have to plan for a runningback by committee next year and giving up TJ in that situation is really risky.
Greene is the best halfback on the team. Barber is the #1 on the Cowboys yet he is injured every year. Greene is the best option right now and as far as signs that he might not be able to make it through the season, Jones is throwing up warning flags left and right.
Yeah but TJ's warning flags came attached to 331 carries. Greene got hurt early, got dinged up middle and went out late. And he basically went down in the most important game the Jets had played in a decade. Not his fault, but do you really want to go into an important game in the playoffs next season with Greene as the guy who has to stay healthy or we lose? I don't. Give TJ and Greene both 200 carries next season. Give Washington 150. Then let them sort out who is going to be on the field in January.
Even before TJ got to 331 carries, he was still showing warning signs. He wasn't hitting the holes in time, running lanes collapsing around him, and he was going down on first contact. As of right now, I'd swap Jones with Washington on your list. He doesn't fumble and even though he lacks the speed against fresh defenders, he can still read the blocks. That puts him in line to be the closer, nothing more. Greene earned a shot as a starter last season, it's time to see what he can do with it.
I totally disagree. I appreciate Jones' contributions but it time to move on, especially with the $3m bonus due next month. Good teams move on, while others cling to old warriors because of past glory. The Patriots compete every year because they are not afraid to say goodbye to the Mike Vrabels, Deon Branches, Adam Vinetarys, Matt Cassells, Assante Samuels, etc. The jets foolishly resigned Chrebet and Martin to mega contarcts at age 30 which burdened our cap and retarded the development of Jordan and later Cotchery and which led to the loss of Coles and the trade of Moss to recoup Coles. Move on, people. Thomas Jones was a warrior, but if we get anything for him it is gravy and we have Greene and Leon as our FUTURE, not Jones.
Heard last night on SportCenter when they were talking about the RBs that have been cut so far that the next one in line is Thomas Jones and Clinton Portis.
Did some calculations... over the last 5 years TJ has carried the ball for an avg of: 1'275,6yds on 308,2 carries for an average of 4,14yds/carry. Averaging 300+ carries in the last 5 seasons is a lot! I would like to see him back on the team however... at this point I'd like the Jets to cut him and then re-sign him to a 2-3 mill 1 yr deal. I don't think he'll accept but I hope we do that... I want all the vets (TJ, Douglas, Feely) back for one final shot at the SB all together... then in 2011 we get younger.
i dont understand the purpose in cutting him there is no cap so the bonus is meaningless in terms of cap hits just keep him as insurance in case leon isnt healthy or just as a extra back
I've wanted to get rid of Jones for the past 2 seasons. I'm glad I was wrong, but, think about it..do you want him when he finally breaks down or trade him while he has some value and get something you won't let later on for him? Even if we can deal him for draft picks, I'd rather gain something now rather than nothing when he has no trade value.
he wouldnt command more then a 6th rd pick probably which is a waste imo id rather hold onto him for insruance
