True, 8 starts and not pulling out a win in Baltimore because the other guys couldn't hold onto the ball are perfect reasons to see why Clemens is a bust. See despite the fact that you'd be singing a completely different tune if McCraphands holds onto the ball, Clemens OBVIOUSLY lacks the intangibles that would have WILLED McCraphands to hold onto the ball so that Clemens (I mean the Jets) wins.
It's a team sport gus and all the guys have to do their part. Even BC's sub-par recieving corps did what they needed to do against VT. McCraphands had 2 catchable balls thrown his way (as did Coles) and did not get the job done. That is in no way Clemens' fault. Like I said before, I do really like Ryan and I'll have no issue if we take him. I was just making a comparison because the situations were so similar and I still like the flashes I see in Clemens.
The ability to come back from having a (rare) bad game, to execute a drive of that calibre, is a sign of strength, not a flaw. All QB's have bad games, only the good ones can come back at the end. That is sort of why I had such high hopes for Clemens after the Baltimore game. He was having a terrible game for 3 quarters (partly not his fault, gameplan, etc.) but lit it up in the 4th. His last drive mirrored the Ryan drive in the video, only his receivers ultimately let him down. Sadly, he soon regressed.
I'd like to propose we chalk up the poor QB play all last season the mess the line was in and have a moratorium on discussing kellen or chad's perceived performance.
We would love to believe this but it's just not the case. The signs were there in 2006! We just chose to ignore them.
I'm not sure I agree. in 2006 there was no running game...last year the line was very poor. I'm interested in seeing what Kellen and/or chad can do with both.
Great idea. No, wait, horrible idea. They were both terrible last year, despite poor OL play. If we don't draft a QB this year to replace the current crop of losers next year, it will be 2010 before we're even thinking about making a serious run.
Nothing but excuses. It sounds like Herm supporters when it was blatantly obvious he sucked towards the end.
When there is a serious OL blasting the other teams off the line of scrimmage on a regular basis, then maybe we can have an argument on the relative merits of the QBs.
"despite poor OL play"?? i'm not sure those words mean what you think they do... With a poor line 99% of the QB's out there are running for their lives or unable to execute consistently. With a poor line 99% of the RB's out there have no holes to run through and are unable to force defenses to honor them further compounding the QB's problems. 1) I respect your opinion that chad and kellen don't appear to be getting it done but you have to give them the tools to get it done. 2) matt ryan is no better than either of them and would take at least a year or 2 to get up to speed. Either way you'd have nothing until 2010 and chances are it wouldn't be significantly better than what you have now. If you want a quick fix at QB it's going to have be a free agent. Barring that, i think we all need to hope this line can maul opposing d-lines or we're in for a long couple of years. 3) if we're drafting a QB, let's not get another game manager with average physical tools. let's grab a gun slinger who needs to mature. Sam Keller from nebraska would be money and you could probably get him for a song in the 4th round. Your mileage may vary
Nonsense. Chad is done as a starter regardless of the OL. Clemens MIGHT have a chance to make it as a starter, but even when he had time he only showed a handful of "flashes". That's just not enough for an organization that spent this kind of offseason money to hang its hat on. This fact should be painfully obvious.
I think you're right Chad should be done either way. But I still think you're not giving enough discredit to the poor line play.
I can assure you that I do. 99%... Are you crazy? Unfortunately, I know Chad, and suspect Kellen, do not have the tools WITHIN THEMSELVES to win it all. a. how could you possible know that? b. he'd be starting in September 2009, at the latest. c. Chad needs to be traded or cut, and Kellen starts with Ryan backing up. sign a vet for insurance. Matt Ryan is a game manager, but that's not all he is. He's a field general. game managers play not to lose. guys like Ryan will their teams to victory. Totally different. We have a gunslinger already with a 1:2 career TD:INT ratio.
You want to improve QB play in the shortest possible timeframe?...sign culpepper and Garcia...cut chad. Open competition. May the best man win.
Quote: "...Nonsense. Chad is done as a starter regardless of the OL. Clemens MIGHT have a chance to make it as a starter, but even when he had time he only showed a handful of "flashes".'..." Well, your opinion (or judgment) is apparently not shared by the folks that count: the CS and FO of the NYJ. I think you ought to see what happens.
