We also don't at OT, WR, TE, RB, OG, C, K, P....... fact is we need thing all over the board. But to help our first round QB we absolutely need to build around him.
Outstanding analysis breakdown by Maximus as always. The breaking down by position is an eye opener. It shows where we put most of our investments in the past and where we didn’t, and provides a snap shot at what we have left in reserve for the rookies and perhaps extra for some late addition. As I see it, It should not be interpreted as to where we need to invest resources in the future. Just because because we over invested in one area does not mean we are set, and just because we are currently under invested in another area imply we are weak. I think however we can draw the conclusion that we didn’t get nearly the value out of our big investments and we could have put our money to better use in other positions/personnel. Kudos to Maximus.
Updated for Breshad Perriman and Connor McGovern. Contract details coming soon in Contract Details Thread.
Since there are only a few deals remaining unsigned, we do have a better idea of what the 2020 cap looks like. With about $27mm still there, only 5 deals remain. Maulet is likely just under $1mm. Jenkins has been reported to be around $5mm. Going off of Fales’ historical contracts he is a minimum type of player, meaning just under $1mm. Onwuasor is a question. I could see him getting anywhere from just under $1mm to about $2mm. He has played well but is coming off a bad year. We can estimate high for these purposes. Then final player is Josh Andrews, likely another guy around $0.75mm. Including this info I can estimate that the Jets have $21-$23 in remaining space. While it is true you will need money for drafted rookies, this is enough room sign other players. There are players who could be cut to get additional space including: -Brian Winters ($7,281,250) -Avery Williamson ($6,500,000) -Josh Bellamy ($2,250,000) -Jonotthan Harrison ($2,250,000) The Jets do have a quite a bit of flexibility at this point.
Don't forget that Trumaine Johnson's $12 million hasn't come off yet, either. The rookies can be paid out of that $12 million, and the team will have around $3-4 million to use during the season or carry over, in addition to whatever else is left by the time TC's over.
The numerical details of Trumaine Johnson’s effective cap hit are available so I calculated them in. While they are not official with the league yet, they are reflected in this thread’s OP.
Within the next yr or two, DOUBLE our entire free cap ($27 x2 = $57M) will be going to just 2 players who are currently on rookie deals (Sam $40m+, Jamal $15M+). Gotta get er done NOW!
I get the point and completely agree that we have to get the Jamal extension done ASAP... but our cap situation is going to look way different next offseason than it will today. Right now we’re scheduled to have $80 mil in cap room and that’s not including the inevitable release of Bell to save $9 mil. Also on Adams, at this point he’d be a fool to sign an extension. Contracts next offseason are going to be huge. He’d be doing himself a disservice to sign anything before then. He’ll most likely set the market for DBs under the new CBA.
I get that too....it's just amazing how much cap a FQB and one or two superstars can suck up. We've been lucky in that regard! (well, not 'lucky' but you know what I mean)
i think we could unload both williamson and winters without any difference in team performance. take the savings to sign an impact player, like clowney or the j-ville de. otherwise, just roll it over into next year's pot.
With projected draft pick cap hits included, the Jets are looking at $16,978,535 in space. Call it $17mm for simplicity’s sake. Just in case anyone was curious.
If this was June 1st, this is the Jets cap space with draft pick projections. This could quickly be increased if necessary. The possibility of a cap decrease in 2021 as a result of the virus makes me think the Jets will A. Try to keep rollover space B. Not do a Jamal Adams extension before the season starts, and likely not until after it is over
Yea. I can see that. No reason to spend what little we have left unless someone we really need shakes loose. Great part is Douglas made a whole lot of one year deals. That can make a huge difference if the salary drop.
