Not to get too much into conspiracy theorys but it could be the agents who leaked that stuff about his characters after he fired them, which is when the whole thing really took off
I'm not gonna get into the conspiracy business either, but I do find it odd that it came out as soon as he fired them.
I am much less afraid of his failure than I would if he were taken in the first round. The old Jets would have taken the guy with the 6th pick. Instead they stayed calm, and went BPA in the first round. The fact that they took this guy in the 2nd round is a bonus. Talented, but flawed QBs should go in this round anyway.
Just heard Mike Sielski of the WSJ on NFLN share a telling tid bit. I'm paraphrasing, but it went something like this. "You know how we NY media are; we look for anything we can...about the Jets. With Geno and the media, it's at a feeling out stage right now. He just wouldn't give us anything."

You can tell from talking to people around the team during this weekend’s rookie mini-camp that many in the organization are smitten with new quarterback Geno Smith. It’s beginning to look more and more like the starting job is his to lose. Smith was impressive during the two days of the mini-camp open to the media. His passes had great zip on them and he looked more decisive as the practices went on as he got more comfortable in the offense. The 22-year-old was even more impressive off the field. He held players’ only meetings at the team hotel to learn the plays and handled the media like a longtime pro. This is not to say the competition is over and Mark Sanchez should start packing up his headbands. There is no doubt this is going to stretch into the summer. Two days of rookie camp in shorts are not enough to judge someone on. But there is a sense around the Jets that they want Smith to win this thing. So, if he can hit the side of the Atlantic Health Training Center with a pass and not commit any buttfumbles between now and September, the Jets will give him the starting nod. Even if he does stumble, I think the Jets will go with veteran David Garrard to start the season and serve as Smith’s mentor until he is ready to take over the job like Kurt Warner did in 2004 for Eli Manning with the Giants. Where does all of this leave Sanchez? The best scenario for the Jets is: Smith shows he’s capable, Garrard proves he’s healthy and another team suffers an injury at quarterback during the preseason. Then, the Jets could trade Sanchez to the quarterback-needy team — after agreeing to eat about $6 million of the $8.75 million coming to him. The only way I think Sanchez is a Jet when the season begins against Darrelle Revis and the Buccaneers is if Garrard gets injured and Smith can’t figure out an NFL offense. Sanchez can still play quarterback in the NFL. Even after 52 turnovers over the last two years, this is not someone who is finished. On the right team with the right supporting cast, Sanchez can win games. But that is no longer with the Jets. Sanchez’s status with the Jets and their fan base reminds me of Oliver Perez with the Mets a few years ago. General manager Omar Minaya gave Perez a ridiculous contract just like Mike Tannenbaum did with Sanchez. That forced the Mets to keep Perez around longer than they should have. Perez had some good moments for the Mets. His start in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS would have been one of the franchise’s great moments if the Mets had won the game. By 2011, though, the bad outweighed the good and the fans viewed Perez as a symbol of everything wrong during the Minaya era. The Mets allowed Perez to come to spring training that year, but cut him before the season, not wanting an ugly scene at Citi Field on Opening Day. Perez is still in the majors, pitching now for the Mariners. Sanchez is the only Jets quarterback to ever lead the team to two AFC Championship games, but fell short in both. He is now a constant reminder of the Tannenbaum era, something the Jets are trying to turn the page from. The Jets know if Sanchez takes the field at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 8, the fans will grumble. If he throws an interception to Revis, the $1.6 billion East Rutherford eyesore might crumble. Sanchez needs to be in another uniform by Sept. 8. The Jets can only hope Smith’s skill and Garrard’s health allows them to make the move that everyone around the Jets needs to. It’s time to move on.
Even so, Geno will not be winning the job before the pre-season. Idzik is all about competition. Also, how much can rookie camps really tell you... I want to see him up against the Rex Ryan defense.
Plus, I'm sure the people he was texting where friends and family telling him to keep his head up. It's not like he just started texting some random girl trying to get something going that night.
waaaaaaaay too early for any kind of talk about a starting qb. the kid played 3 practices in shorts against other rookies and walk ons who will not make an nfl roster. i would hope he looked good. but this is to reactionary to have any merit
Way too early to anoint a starting QB. If Geno had a successful 3 days & it pleased the organization,great. But keep things into perspective. Whoever wins the starting QB job is really gonna have to earn it. That means a quality TC & preseason performances.
Let's see how he does against Wilkerson, Coples and Cromartie before giving him the starting job. Talk is premature, but I'm impressed with Geno so far.
While I agree it's way to early, I don't put any stock in who he is against in mini camp. At this point your not looking for plays, your watching the little things. His footwork while under center, timing on his release and the quickness of it, the accuracy on his throws, his ability to absorb the play book, his demeanor when the coaches get on him, the leadership he shows his fellow rookies ect, ect. Mini camps are about his tools moving forward, not number based results.
I'm just hoping David Garrard is healthy this season. That way Geno only gets on the field at the start if he earns it. Ideally either Geno tears up camp with real command of the playbook or he sits until the Jets are either out of the race or the starter plays his way out of the job or is hurt.
Right but no one made it a point to report. The consensus on him before the draft for the most part was that he was a hard worker and a had the ability to become a leader
Lets put it this way Geno is our most talented Quarterback but he's also the least experienced. If he can prove that he has the mental aspect down and can handle the reigns then he's going to start. The Jets brass were impressed with how far along he is at this point I mean he audibled without being taught how they do it, its small but important. He held a players only meeting to work on somethings and he wants it bad. This is Russell Wilson all over again and I couldn't be happier. OTA's are coming up so we'll see more but as of now it is Geno's job to lose because he's the most talented
Just because he's the most talented doesn't make him ready. He is our most talented QB right now, but lets not rush him into the field. The sample size is too small. Wilson destroyed Flynn in a TC competition. We have yet to get to that point.
