Vince Young was mentally fragile...Born a gifted athlete, Geno wasnt the perfect QB. I dont know but I think Geno knows what it takes and has the IQ of a smart QB. Young just did his thing. I did think Young was going to be great though
They are compared because the are both Qbs with perceived maturity issues. He was also compared to Ryan Leaf. Ryan Leaf and VY are the two biggest Qb maturity issue as of late. So anything having to do with maturity issues in the QB position will be compared to those two. The doomed to fail part is the media being the media take the worse case scenario and sensationalize that is today's media. That is why it is hard to play in NY you have to ignore all this crap. This is what Ultimately killed Sanchez.
Well said. Main difference to me is during those years and up to today, the Raider fans stuck with the team through thick and thin with a dysfunctional owner. They did not buy into the media crap like some Jet fans seem to do. IMHO.
Did you guys read about Greg Schiano comparing Geno to Namath? http://timeswv.com/sports/x508492702/HERTZEL-COLUMN-Geno-Smith-compared-to-Joe-Namath What Jets QB isnt compared to Namath?...Well, maybe not Clemens.
I think some of us need to be enlighten as to when the so called "maturity issues" came up by the after the fact analysts. Prior and during the draft, when all the experts and NFL pundits identified Geno as the best QB in this years class, I dont recall a lot of maturity issues being discussed, at least not to the level that would separate him and hinder his draft status from the rest of the group. From his interviews he appears to me pretty polished for a young man, and if he is considered cocky, well to me that is not a bad trade for an ultra competitive environment like the NFL were confidence is key and winning is everything.
What killed Sanchez is that at the end of the day Pete Carroll was right. He was not ready to be a NFL QB....
I hate to say it but the more I read about Geno's character, the less I like the pick. Really hope the Jets did their homework on this kid.
Where were all these maturity and character stories before the draft why only after being drafted by the jets do these sources come out
I think there were a few rumblings pre draft, but not as much as now. And yeah, you need to be cocky/confident to be a NFL QB.
Huh? I'm talking about racism that's ingrained into your subconsious, maybe from parents or a racially influenced upbringing. The type of person who brings race into things without realizing it. In other words, they didn't think before they spoke. They just immediately put Geno Smith in the Vince Young category when they aren't even similar players. They just happen to be black. You can try to deny it all you want, but I can see what's really happening.
So you can't prove it so it's just your imagination, personal views and prejudice against people speaking that's coming out.
its probably 2 fold - first i would say that there is a loose "gag" order in play that most teams follow. unless the player is an absolute asshole - most little things about personality and respect are overlooked under the circumstances. most team execs/league officials do not want to feed negatives to the media about these young players - and risk the backlash of character damage, finaincial loss, etc etc... second - its the jets - so that adds some grease to the negative stories and the media just runs with it. IMO - ultimately it depends what happens on the field. if smith works out and succeeds - great, if he busts and gets eaten up by the media in the process, so be it and tough doody on him and the jets.
Oh wow Schiano wasnt kidding, this is the article from 2011 where he compared Geno to Namath lol http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2011/10/rutgers_coach_greg_schiano_com.html
heh - keep your knees healthy kid. Imagine if Namath were a pro today with twitter and everything? Oh my.
What reports? Anonymous reports? Don't you realize that you are forming opinions based on statements by faceless, nameless people. You are going all in on the integrity of a reporter looking for a story to write. That is intellectually dishonest.
