I agree he shouldn't be immune - but I think in this draft - he is. Maybe you take a flier on someone in Round 3, but you don't push him out with all the holes we have.

    Growing into what exactly?

What about his performance this week led you to believe that he is growing or improving in any way from his last performance as an NFL quarterback?

Get him a stud receiver who will fight for the ball, then we will see. Or a real deep threat. It's tough to throw short routes with 8 9 guys on the box

Won't make a difference he can't complete a screen pace now. Which one of his 10 yard overthrows to the sideline is anyone going to catch?

You want to beat up on 8-9 guys in the box...bubble screen. The Broncos and Pats live off the bubble screen. Roll the QB out - he is supposed to be mobile. Smith threw 2 screen passes today and 1 was taken back for 6 and the other was an overthrow that was a lucky non-int

He didn't win any Super Bowls, he stumbled upon 2 superbowls.

Everyone knows Eli is not a Franchise QB, But we have to say that he is because he has 2 rings.

That's something he is going to have to work on. I think we need more talent in order to actually assess how good he really is. Besides if we have the talent and he isn't, it's ready for someone else to step in.

Whether he is or is not the long term solution at QB can be debated on numerous fronts.

What's clear is right now he incapable of stemming the tide when momentum swings against us on the road. In fact, he adds fuel to the fire. Holds the ball too long, stares down receivers... All of it...

RIGHT NOW - this is problem...

BTW - him and his receivers looked like they never practiced an out pattern EVER.

I don't want to draft a QB in the first round this year, but I'm scared we're going to have to....

What I do want is an experienced steadying back up that can still play. If we had that guy, he might have started the 3rd qtr...

The Jets haven't invested in that for 5 years now.

You guys forget Geno said we'll make the playoffs after he was drafted.

    We have to now.

You don't understand the fact that he WON TWO SUPERBOWLS.

Don't call him Elite, I don't care - but as a Jets fan, I d no't care if David Garrard leads us to a Super Bowl I would take it.

A guy who owns up for his mistakes, will hang in a collapsing pocket to make a throw and better his team.

Experience aside, maybe Simms is that guy or something even better.

What I saw yesterday is a Rookie QB who at times struggled to organise the offense, change up plays when needed and worryingly struggle with the weather conditions.

how could they have got rid of Sanchez given his ridiculous old skool top 5 pick rookie contract? people act like we had a choice over Sanchez and could have just cut him and slotted in some instant starter - the only top signal caller to have moved in Manning and they tried to get him but he was never going to come to NY with his brother here.

The thing that is becoming obvious at this point is that opposing defenses are reading Geno's eyes and his release is a bit late on a lot of passes.

He's playing the game at a different speed in his head and he's getting eaten alive out there.

Now, that said, the pass protection has been really brutal. In games where the Jets could run the ball that has been less of a factor but in games where they couldn't, like yesterday, it has been huge.

Geno seems to lack the ability to throw based on timing and what should happen. On an out the ball should be in the air before a receiver cuts so that when he turns around the ball is there. Limiting the chance of a db making a play on it. Seems like all of Geno's outs are thrown after the receiver has completed the pattern and is standing there covered. Over the middle he locks on and doesn't see anything in front of the play.

The only time he looks half way decent is on some longer throws where he can see a receiver clearly come open and have space. That is a bad sign if the only throws he can make are those and 1 yard or less screen passes - which seem to be a mystery each time he throws one.

The WCO is a timing offense. How does a rookie QB develop timing when his receivers keep going out with injuries and suspensions?

The only receivers that Geno has had to work with all year long are Bilal Powell and Tommy Bohanon. How is that supposed to work out?

Not defending Geno with this BTW just pointing out that the Jets "talent" at receiver this year has been playing musical chairs with him.

They didn't have to give him that ridiculous extension.

They didn't but in his first 3 years you weren't going to pull your top 5 pick. He was the franchise and in 2011 he did had a Jet record 32 total TD. The Jets lost the last 5 that season, but the team imploded on many levels from the locker room out. Holmes, Mason, Burress, Wayne Hunter, Rex Ryan leadership was called into question -- in 2012 the Tebow Sporano experiment was a disaster all around.

I don't get the extension - it's like they were hoping he was going to build on 2011 with Sporano and the Tebow circus as some sort of offensive guru or something.

But with Geno you don't have that top 5 pressure, that win now, that he must start and perform. No reason he can't sit on the bench and watch a bit - they have him locked up for 5 years at low money. Terrel pryor sat this week for oakland and a no name rookie tossed 3 TD passes. GB started a guy that played eh...you don't know but you can say Geno is the only option the jets have to play QB right now.

Terrible offensive line play when Smith struggles
A fragile Santonio for a handful of games
    Salas, Cumberland, and Sudfield
No Hill, Kerley and Winslow for most of the season
Running game that shows up sporadically all season

For these reasons above I can't fault Smith. Almost all of his mistakes are rookie mistakes like staring down receivers, getting happy feet and throwing bad passes under duress, etc.

Give him some bonafide weapons, a little better protection and a year to study tape and his mistakes, and he will be fine. For me, he is at or exceeded expectations for this year. Now Dee Milliner on the other hand......
