The question we should be asking about Smith is not whether he will be a quality QB but good enough to win a SB. He does remind me of Eli and Joe Flacco in he'll need a great group of players around him to to make up for any shortcomings. What I don't understand is why people think we should draft another QB in the upcoming draft? Unless a Marcus Mariota falls to us (Doubtful) then why should we waste a year of preparation. That's similar to people saying we shouldn't get rid of Ryan in the middle of a rebuilding job. I have come to realize that Geno probably wont be a Pro Bowl QB, but there is no reason he shouldn't be able to take us too the promised land. He has all the right moves. No Tom Cruise jokes please.
This crap again? You sound foolish. If you don't think just about every team other than GB wouldn't take Luck over any other QB in the league right now given age as a factor--including Idzik, then, well, LOL, enjoy the laughing gas. _
And that's a problem. If you just brought up his turnovers in the air, then it is fine but when you bring up his fumbles(BTW, its not always on Geno as far as the fumbles go....bad pass protection can and does happen and it should never be a formality that a QB should hold onto the ball after getting sacked on the blindside), then you have to be fair and give out the overall TDs Geno has been accounted for just like the turnovers he has been accounted for. And he isn't the Manning brothers....he has ability to scramble and run. Now he isn't Newton/RG3 but he isn't a stiff behind the line. It has shown up before...but again, if you don't have the player personnel to successfully launch it, what do you expect Marty to do? Geno isn't calling the plays unless its a 2 minute drill, its on Marty that we aren't using the deep ball(And Marty is right in not using it or at least picking his spots on when to). People have a misconception because of Madden or what not that 3rd and long should be easy conversions on the NFL level with a deep ball. They have tried btw. Tampa Bay stopped our run and wanted Geno to beat them which he did(Albeit David helped big time on the final drive). Atlanta stopped our run, Geno beat them. Teams have tested Geno and Geno has made them pay enough that they can't load up against the run anymore. I just want to debunk bringing up the completions by the way in that drops go against the QB here. Powell dropped a ball that needed to be catched. Hill ran a wrong route on the final pass. Also, QBs usually miss 10 or so passes many games....even the top ones do it. Why hold this against Geno? Why is completing 8(Should be 10 but alas) suddenly bad? Why is Geno at fault for that? If the defense is vulnerable to the run, then by all means run the ball.
We'll see about that in his contract year. 3rd year is the year of no excuse and 4th year is money year. Right now he is in the honey moon period of his 58% completion "he's gonna be great" year. Owners won't find that funny anymore when they have to pay him. While you guys drink the kool-aid I will be patiently waiting for the implosion.
great points. And Geno had a faster 40 than Cam. Not by a lot but still. I know what you mean though, Cam is a monster.
Heh. For some reason too many Jet fans really underrate Flacco. I used to think it was mostly Sanchez fans, who of course were generally delusional. Flacco is having a not so great year this year, but of course he's lost a lot of help. But he just won the SB. I mean really...
football teams aren't fantasy football owners, they don't give a damn about an arbitrary set of stats, just what will lead them to the most wins. Luck's not Tebow where he's so unrefined the possibility of winning and doing it often seems low. he's an incredibly competent QB thats won in clutch situations and is worth keeping around. no team cares about getting an average completion percentage over 60, they care about what will leads them to W's.
At one point you could compare the two, but while Flacco kept progressing, Sanchez started regressing. 11 TDs to 0 INTs in the post-season is unheard of. He had a great run. I don't think he's worth the money he has now, but players around him are getting better (Marlon Brown / Tandon Doss). I don't even think Flacco is in his prime yet. Previous poster was talking about Luck as if he's some game manager  As each game goes, Luck reminds me more and more of John Elway - especially in the 4th QTR
I am a Geno fan, but Luck is amazing. That game against the Texans what great qbs do, lose your star wide receiver no problem, go out and make the throws to win game. His stats weren't even that great, but stats don't matter. Colts were down 24-6 in the 3rd.... Enough of this Luck is a "game manager" nonsense, he is already a top 6-7 qb in the league. Once he wins a ring he becomes a top 3 qb
I disagree with Flacco, for the amount of money he gets paid, he needs to be finding ways to win games
Just saying, but look at Matt Ryan since he's been without Julio Jones and Roddy White. He has 2 TDs and 7 INTS in the last two weeks. Joe Flacco lost some talent around him and has 10 TDs and 9 INTS. They still have Gonzalez and Torrey Smith respectively and both are much better than anything we have. Both of those QBs are have been very good QBs in the past, yet they arent playing very well with out a supporting cast. How do some of you expect Geno to play with the absolute shit thats currently around him. I hate to make excuses, because some of his turnovers have been pretty bad and do fall on him, but the QB needs help and Geno doesnt have it (yet hopefully). At this point, lets just hope the run game continues to do well and Geno isnt forced to carry the team, and keeps his turnovers low.
Those QB's do not have a defense like ours and are asked to do WAY more for their teams than Geno. Ray Rice has been a ghost this season and Jackson has been injured so no running games either for them. Terrible examples you decided to use, I get what your trying to say though.
Matt Ryan looks like absolute garbage without Jones and white, so that tells you something With Flaccos case, Ill take torrey smith, jacoby jones, and dickson over a injured or healthy rabble of what we have
You are delusional. The offensive line, running game, and receivers cannot be remotely compared to 2009. Geno's stats through his first 8 games this year are better then Sanchez's stats through his first 8 games last year, as his 4th year as a starter. Sanchez also ran for 10 yards and 0 td's through his first 8 games while Geno has over 150 yards rushing and 3 rushing td's so far. Geno has done more with less, by any metric. Geno certainly has not been a world beater so far, but he has, in his short tenure, proven that he is far, far, better then Muck Sanchez ever was.
Whats with all the Geno dislike here? He is a rookie He is throwing to guys coming of the street What are they expecting? Top 10 qb ability in his rookie year?
Just look at the games where our defenses havent been able sustain their success. Cinci game is a prime example, and even Tennessee to a certain extent. My point wasnt nearly about the defenses. It was about the lack of talent on offense. As for running games, ours was never anything notable until Ivory had those two good games. Other than that its been average at best. Half of the time its been shut down (Cinci, TB, Pitt, and even the Falcons game we didnt do much on the ground). Even if Rice is a shell of his former self, he still commands more respect than any back we have. Point was (that I think you missed) that both QBs went from having talent around them, to not- and even then they have more talent than we currently have. They were/are considered quality QBs, that arent playing at a high level because of the lack of talent. How could you realistically expect Geno Smith to do significantly more than he has?... Thats all I was saying. Didnt really have anything to do with defenses.
A lot of people were invested in Geno failing from the moment the Jets took him. He was not a highly popular pick. It's going to take awhile for that to shake out.
At this point, the only thing I would like to see is for him to cut down on the interceptions. Other than that, its hard to expect more. And as I posted above, with the lack of talent we have, some of the interceptions may be attributed to that.
