What happened to the Geno who didnt turn the ball over much in college. Thats what I want to know. The guy is a dope when it comes to ball security.

He did have 26 fumbles the last two years in college. One of the biggest reasons people were against him was the fumble problem and his small hands. I was dead set against drafting him as I felt the last thing we needed was another fumbling QB. I believe I was wrong as I have been pleasantly surprised with Geno. He has upside, he can make plays, has a great arm, has displayed very good accuracy, has shown some toughness and resiliency. Will he learn to take care of the ball better? Will he learn the most important aspect of the game the mental game? Will he learn to read defenses and get of the ball quickly? We will likely not know these answer for years. I watched pretty much every Jet game since 1970 and i have seen many many bad years where our biggest game of the year was the pre-season game against the Giants as the regular season was misery. I can live with mistakes if he makes progress as it gives us hope for the future. Very likely we will be 2-7 at the bye or at best 3-6. I very much doubt we are going anywhere this year. But maybe next year if Geno develops.

Falcons coach Mike Smith on Geno Smith: "He looks like he's improving each and every week." Coaches will say anything. #Jets

Let's all stop the backbiting and root for Geno to have a huge rebound week on MNF against the Falcons and for the Jets to shock the world and even shock that douche Dick Semen

I think they might also spend some time on how to stop that old geezer TE on the Falcons from catching 12 passes like he did last week

Especially you, Grampa Noah there on your Ark

Not sure what all that meant, but the sentiment is highly admirable. Hope Geno doesn't emulate some slapdick quarterback and, instead, plays like a goddamn Jet!

I'd believe an NFL coach over Cimini, that's for sure. Geno's turnovers are pretty much outshining everything else. I hope the coaches tore him a new one for that behind the back nonsense. Protect the ball should be #1 priority. He needs to have a bounce back game. David Lee needs to get Geno on the right path.

I thought I liked him but his biggest problem to me is his arrogance. Almost all of his turnovers seem to come from that and I don;t know how much of it comes from being passed over in the first round but from the moment they called his name he has seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. At this point he probably does need to be benched in order to bring him down a notch or two.

Personally I think he's best quality so far is his toughness and even demeanor. There's a lot to bitch about but Geno has kept his mouth shut, taken some amazing shots and stood tall. The guy hasn't put it on anyone except himself. If that's a chip and arrogance we need more players with it.

I'd say his turnovers are the result of a rookie making rookie mistakes, not arrogance created by getting picked in the 2nd round. I've seen one turnover that might have been the result of him thinking he was better than he is. The majority are correctable mistakes that will come in time.

Interesting read here. Shows that the book hasn't closed on Geno yet. Just want to see improvement.

I keep focusing on the Geno Smith saga so much its hard to forget about that old adage on new QBs: two years don't worry, third year worry. I spend my other time watching baseball and soccer, that I forget in those sports you have to show your quality right away. While we want to see some growth in Smith, we can't expect the world from him until the third season. Comparing and contrasting to Sanchez at the same age is pointless. Rex stays, so does Geno.

I mentioned this in another thread, and I've tried to find some info online.

Now, I've deleted all four games off my tivo, so I haven't had a chance to go back and watch again...but it seems that Geno takes an inordinate number of drop back steps after he gets the snap out of shotgun.

Maybe I'm not recognizing it as a "pistol" formation, but I've seen him take a 7-9 step drop on some plays.

Is that unusual? I can't remember seeing a qb take that many while in shotgun.

Everything I've read says something a little different, but not one mentions a situation that calls for that deep a dropback.

    What say youse?

Here is Geno's first interception from the Titans game, where steven hill got knocked out.

    1. The Jets run a play fake, and have max protection going on with only two WRs out in the route. The titans blitz, but it's picked up. Holmes is double covered at the bottom of the screen. Hill has inside position on the corner. Geno needs to throw the ball over the linebacker, and then between the Safety and corner.

    2. Geno sees Hill with inside position, and decides to throw to Hill. The blue dot is about where the ball will eventually end up.

    3. The ball is in the air, Hill slows up but never locates the football until too late and the corner cuts in front of him and gains position.

    4. Hill sort of stands there and watches the INT and gets crushed by the safety for his troubles.

    5. Geno looks disgusted by the whole thing on the sidelines. I'm not sure if it was more Geno's fault or Hill's, but I'm encouraged by the fact that Geno is at least making the right reads.

And you don't attribute that improvement at all to the fact that he was finally working in a good offensive system, working with MM & Lee who actually know how to work a system to the strengths of the player? No one could ever convince me than Sanchez would be better than a top 15 player, that's obvious. However I think he's been overly criticized as a single entity without looking at the big picture.

I'd don't fall into that category as Sanchez is to blame for his mistakes, his poor reads, and him constantly trying to force a ball into double and triple coverage - even with the good intent of trying to make something happen. Throw it away. But there are plenty of people here to say "its Sanchez fault" for everything that is wrong with the team or for every loss. That's blatantly unfair to the player, the person, the team, and fanbase. It's like blaming Gholston for the defense failing to stop Pitt on the last drive in the 2011 AFCCG. If that's one player that sucks and can be labelled an absolute bust, its him.

    Year 1 - rookie
Year 2 - small improvement but nothing great
Year 3 - another small step but with diminishing talent
Year 4 - hard to judge. Terrible QB play, Terrible team, terrible OC, defense falling off.

Sanchez was horrid - no doubt, but Peyton Manning would have had a hard time getting to 8-8 with the Jets as constituted last year. That's not saying Sanchez should not be criticized - he should be. He went back to making rookie mistakes and a whole host of other issues. But that also means the fan base shouldn't lay 99% of the blame of last year's 6-10 debacle at Mark's feet. That's all I am arguing for.

As I have said many times in multiple threads, I root for the decal on the side of the helmet. Geno is my QB until further notice. Mark has probably played his last game in the green & white unless by some miracle of God he can rehab AND Geno shits the bed.

Until then, I am hoping Geno can turn his shit show at Tennessee into an upset win in ATL, and he has my full support.

This has to be a big game for Geno.

There are three categories of people: completely impatient and expect immediate results always, moderately patient people who understand he's a rookie and will make mistakes, and finally there are the eternally patient people who are for all intents and purposes "too patient" and would have given Sanchez another 5 years to "figure things out" despite the fact that he's obviously not capable of being a franchise QB and would extend the same courtesy to Geno or any other player we draft for that matter.

The first category of people already want him run out of town. The last category of people couldn't care less if he throws 10 picks a game for the next 5 years because they think for some reason that infinite amount of time will some how reveal the superstar in every single player in the league, despite their obvious issues that they are unable to fix.

I fall in the middle category. I understand he's a rookie and, while I didn't want to draft him in the first place, hoped that he would be the answer at that QB spot. I understand he doesn't have to be Andrew Luck or Russel Wilson or Cam Newton in his rookie year to have any shot of being a legitimate QB in the NFL. Some guys do need some time to learn the speed of the game and read the defenses, etc.

That being said my patience is wearing very, very thin already. I wasn't anticipating a playoff season anyway (likely a 7-9 season or 8-8 at best) but more than wins and losses the turnovers are driving me insane. I get that even great QBs will turn the ball over, hell Flacco was SB MVP last year and I think he had four or five last week, but if he doesn't start learning from his mistakes soon I'm going to wonder if he's ever going to learn from his mistakes or if he's just another turnover prone QB.

So, Geno, PLEASE have a good game. Protect the football. To be honest I would rather lose this game with Geno having a very solid game with little to no turnovers than to win it with Geno being a garbage factory and handling out turnovers like a bakery going out of business.

I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty. That said, Geno really does need to begin to give us the idea that he is taking some steps forward on the ball security issue.

It might be a wise thing for the Jets to have a low risk game plan this game and maybe take a few deep shots off of that. That's what the Colts did in Peyton's 5th game when patience was wearing very thin after 3 TD's and 11 Ints. They got a win out of that.

Then they went back to the throw the ball as much as you can theory and promptly lost 4 in a row again. Peyton was 1-8 in his first 9 starts and he threw a ton of passes in all the losses.

Buffalo's secondary is making Geno's performance against them look less impressive by the week.

not to be confused with what an accomplishment it would have been to intercept him 5 times last year.

in light of their other performances, that says more about Baltimore's weaknesses than it does about Buffalo's strength.
