Apologies but you are maybe the 6 th poster to post this as if it has any relevance. By this rationale, one can never question or criticize a rookie QB because one of the greatest QBs in the history of the NFL struggled as a rookie. It's a bogus argument. Geno is not Peyton. The latitude given to Peyton was and should have been greater than any latitude given to any rookie QB in the last 20 years. The latitude reserved only for maybe Luck last year. What Peyton Manning did as a rookie is irrelevant when looking at what Geno is doing or what EJ is doing or what Bridgewater or Boyd or Mariota or McCarron will do next year. It's fraudulent thinking. _
Not sure whether it's lazy or whether that's just how the modern athlete learned to style watching Sportscenter. _
That's interesting.....I feel similar. U have these 22/23 year old athletes playing this game at least for several years and they should be students of the game and know what flies and what doesn't. I can understand not knowing the small ins and outs about the pro game, terminology, and certain position techniques - but as a QB - u really should already have the pocket clock in ur head calibrated and know how to protect the ball within reason.
Also, comparing rookie QB's in 1998 to rookie QB's in 2013 is just silly. QB's are far better prepared at lower levels now than they used to be and with all the rule changes, it's much easier for a rookie QB to have early success in today's game. Really, the comparison should be from like the Ryan/Flacco year through now since they started the trend of rookie QB's playing competent ball from the onset.
Of course MM isn't Sean Payton, (and this may be a "grass-being-greener" thing), but, watching the Saints-Fins game, it might be time for MM to protect Geno by having him check down to the back on every play for a drive. It seems like two of every three passes, Brees flicks to Sproles on the outside, neutralizing the Fins' front four. It's highly repetitive, but, damn, it's effective and protecting the QB. Could be good for Geno.
Fins are taking away Brees' deep options which opens up Sproles on LBs ... matchups are not good for Miami. Geno doesn't get the same respect Brees does
hehe, it was a bit of a tirade on my part. those are the things jilozzo that just dont make sense to me. i am not going to kill the kid for bad reads or even for bad throws, those are to be expected as a rookie. heck i am not even going to kill him for the second fumble. but that first fumble just letting the ball flop around out there begging for someone to knock it out really frustrated me. its the little fundamental things that every kid who plays qb should understand. i dont care how good the kid is, someone explain to him how important it is to protect the ball.
I get the impression that Morningwheg is none too eager to adapt his playbook to any one players needs. I could be wrong.
I cant stand when people make comparisons like this.Geno is what he is hes not Peyton Manning,Waren Moon,Bart Starr or Eli ,He's Mark Sanchez with diffrent skin color
the only point to the comparison is that not every player is an instant unanimous success, even great players had less than great beginnings at times so the struggles smith has is not a sign that he can't or won't improve. does it mean he will be great as well? no, it doesn't mean that either, it just means that things can potentially change in a positive manner despite problems to start with. thats all the Manning/Smith comparisons mean. and he is not Mark Sanchez, if it seems that way its only because sanchez barely got passed his rookie learning curve throughout his tenure. Smith is a vertical threat QB training on the go,seriously where would you even get that rabble from?

funk? Has has 2 + turnovers in each game. That isn't a funk that is a disaster waiting to happen each week. How do teams play defense against the jets? Just get on the field and geno will give you the ball.
But Peyton was going to a team that was 0-16 and needed help all over the place. The Jets have talent and with the right QB or even a non-turnover happy QB can compete all season. Manning was also about 1:1 TD:INT as a rookie 26:28 -- Geno is not even close to that.
Adjusted for offensive inflation, Mannings rookie rating today would be a respectable mid 80s, where Geno sits in the high 60s. It is significantly easier to play QB now than it was 15 years ago. Talented rookies should be expected to put up decent numbers if they are "franchise" QBs in today's NFL.
Jets lack offensive weapons, I agree the Jets are talented on defense...But that WR core has never played together fully a whole game yet.
