The Jets gave him his chance. At his weight there was a real chance that nobody would take him seriously as a candidate and the Jets treated him right the whole way through and then gave him the job. That's worth a lot.
Please find the post wheer someone, ANYONE said Namath didn't have the right to express his opinion? Also, what specific "valid criticism" of Namath's do you agree with?
This is like the First Amendment/Hank Williams argument. Shut the fuck up doesn't mean I'm saying you have no right to say what you're saying. It may mean I don't want to hear the shit. But no one has said he doesn't have the right to say it. People have said he doesn't know fuck all of what he's talking about, or that the shit he's saying isn't valid. But that's a fundamentally different thing than what Abdulsalaam (sp?) said.
I think what most posters are trying to say is Jenkins opinion holds more value/merit due to the fact that he actually played for the Jets recently. Under Rex Ryan's regime which includes schottenheimer and sanchez. As much as Namath has done for the history of the franchise his opinion is not nearly as important because theres nothing to really back it up. Until your inside the situation you won't really understand it. Ill stick with Jenkin's analysis of the team over Joe's.
You may have been intending to refer to "the right" in some First Amendment context, but that is not the context involved here. Everyone knows Namath is not about to have the government come throw him in jail for what he said. That's a red herring. But people saying "he should shut up! He's too old! What a drunk! What does he know he hasn't played for them since there were dinosaurs!" In other words, he doesn't have the right to speak without that kind of off the point abuse. No one was talking about the police going after him.
I dunno, I think Sanchez is developing nicely as a leader, but it is awfully hard not to do dumb shit with the ball when you are running for your life, or hearing footsteps on every down. I mean, among all the other crap he has to track in his head in seconds, he has this train blowing its horn behind him nearly every down. They gotta change up the offense to cover weaknesses and protect him. Any NFL QB is going to get rattled and do dumb things when you press them. I remember a certain MVP future HoF QB throwing 4 picks in one game this season. Pressure on a QB is a good thing, unless it is your QB.
I don't want to get into a way off topic back and forth, but is your position that Namath has a right to criticize, but then people shouldn't criticize him?
No hes saying shut the fuck up because the organization that you represent and are still sort of the face of doesn't need you making it look bad. It does nothing good for the team so if you really want to help shut up.
People have a right to criticize WHAT he says, not that he's saying things about the Jets that they (meaning homers every one of them) don't like hearing.
Namath's a fan like all of us, if radio programs want to ask him about the Jets, I'm fine with it. If he says something I disagree with, I'll criticize him, but if he says something I agree with that's fine too. Quite frankly I don't think he's said anything out of line and I actually like to see his take on everything. It's no different than some posters opinions on here.
Both incorrect about Jenks and Woodhead. Woodhead never fucking started a game and made and impact here, he didn't fit the fucking scheme. Get over him not being on this team. McKnight's doing very well here. Jenks' knees were finished. How could he come back? He can't play football anymore. As for Woody, no one wanted to pay him anything worth him returning because they couldn't trust him to play 16 games and make the same impact. He retired. Ellis, most of us haven't seen him play. I can't imagine he's tearing it up considering he had a decent season last year and a great playoffs. He was playing for a contract in January. Even if you picked Edwards has a player with heart, he's injured too. So if he got injured here, and Plax wasn't signed, the Jets would be in a shitty position.
Cotchery had heart. Woody and Jenks had broken down bodies. Enough with the Woodhead crap already, there was no room at the inn, plus McKnight is much better. Ridley is about to take Woodhead's touches anyway.
Danny Woodhead definitely didn't come to my mind.. considering he didn't actually play for the team, ya know?
Jenkins barely played for us and he was always more like a player choach anyway. I can read between the lines, he doesn't like schoty as much as most of us dont like him. And u know I have said this before, Joe has earned the right to say whatever he wants about the jets. Until we win another SB, he pretty much is the jets. Sent from my EVO 3D
Look, fellows, I don't like Schottenheimer OR Callahan. I think Callahan is an asshole. He certainly acted like an asshole at Nebraska. Problem is it is almost unheard of for two coaches to be fired from the same team during a season. Barring one of these guys doing something ridiculous off the field (drunk driving, smoking pot in a high school parking lot, mating with a gorilla at the Bronx Zoo), only one of them at the most will be fired during the season. My only point about possibly seeing Callahan take over the OC duties if Schottenheimer were to be fired is because he has done it before. Deserve's got nothin' to do with it. If deserve had anything to do with it, then Rex Ryan would have to fire every offensive assistant coach. Whether Schottenheimer gets fired during the season or not, the scheme will not be changed during the season. The only change would be play calling (some plays might get scrapped and others would be emphasized more) and the sequence of plays. There might be less predictability with Callahan (or Cavanaugh) in charge. It is nothing more than that. Again, I do not like Callahan.
