I have to agree on all points there. Clemens, I forgot the rule about draft position. I wouldn't want them tendering a useless backup QB for 2nd round money.

Oh you mean the draft where we don't have a 3rd, 4th or 5th round pick? That draft?

The issue of the draft being a crapshoot is somewhat mitigated by the fact that Leon is uncertain at this point as well. However, this team has demonstrated in the past a desire to build through our own players and FA rather than the draft. I don't see them letting Leon go for a 2nd. I could be wrong, though, and if so, I hope to God we get a good replacement like Matthews in that spot.

If I recall correctly, there is no league minimum in an uncapped year. That's been a big concern for the players' union. If we do hone in on someone like Golden Tate in the first, I can see Clowney getting the axe. It wouldn't devastate me by any stretch. Part of it depends on whether Smith actually does return, or whether we tender him at a 2nd round level and someone bites for some unknown reason.

    That's hugely disappointing.

We have a 5th, and we can trade out of the 1st for more picks.

Ugh. For the 2nd time, we DO have a 5th round pick. It's the Eagles' pick acquired from New Orleans.

This says the Rams have Philadelphia's pick and Cleveland has ours...feel free to post your own sources as I have no faith in mine at all..of course, make sure you do.

Are you daft? Your "source" is Wikipedia?

The Eagles HAD two picks in the 5th round. The Rams take theirs, we take the one from New Orleans.

I was wrong. It's even better. According to the Eagles, they're shipping us THEIR 5th rounder and giving the New Orleans one to the Rams. I thought it was the other way around.

That's a win. We bumped up our positioning in the 5th round. The Sheppard trade stings even less with this.

I would let Leon walk in a heart beat for a 2nd rounder.

The Philadelphia Eagles official website does nothing for you? Look up, then shut up.

I'm reading Section 4 as saying the limits on new player compensation apply to salary, but not total compensation (salary+bonuses). That's important, and could potentially give the Jets more wiggle room to sign free agents.

In other words, say the Jets let Kellen Clemens walk and he signs a contract with a first year salary of three million. Whatever bonuses and future year salaries he gets are irrelevant; the Jets can sign anybody they want, provided they accept a first year salary of 3 mil, growing at no more than 30% per year. Since there are no restrictions on bonuses, the Jets can give out tremendous signing bonuses in order to make up for the salary restrictions and get their guy. The player will like all the up front money, the team will like that they get their player, and I'm not certain but it's possible that bonus money paid out in an uncapped year won't be prorated against any cap that's eventually instituted. As long as Woody has enough cash on hand, this is potentially not an obstacle at all.

Of course, it could be much more complicated, particularly if a team signing a former Jet decides to stick it to them by giving a minimum salary in the first year, offset with a larger signing bonus. Better hope the Patriots don't want any of our FAs, because they'd definitely do something like this to make Tannenbaum's life difficult.

Making a late push for "least knowledgeable"? Why would you post a source in which you have no faith?

So what you are saying is go up to a big name FA, say Julius Peppers, and offer him a deal worth 1.5 million in base salary (year 1) which increases by 30% each year, and 45 million in signing bonuses to round out his total contract to about 50 million over 5 years? haha thats a hell of a loophole...

But by virtue of doing it that way, he is locked to us like glue for 5 years, we couldnt cut/ trade a deal like that that without going into massive cap hell. Our best bet would be him retiring 3 years into the deal

Salary means everything. No loopholes there.

Or use the draft picks to acquire players via trade, but one pick one player. No four picks for one player.
