Whether or not bringing in Watson is the right thing to do depends on who our GM is.

If Idzik was our GM, I would have no faith he could build a competitive roster (fast) without our premium draft picks. Heck, he couldn't do it WITH our premium picks.

Can Joe Douglas bring in Watson and build out the rest of the roster with 2 (at most) low first round picks over the next 2 drafts? That's the question that needs to be answered before anyone can say Watson is a good idea. Ya, I know we have other, lower picks, but those 'really good' players at the top of the draft will be out of reach. Joe will have to create a Lobster and Prime Rib dinner with hot dogs and fish sticks.

Maybe he can. Our future will depend on it.

It's the other way around. If QBs were overpaid, the teams with top QBs would do worse than those with lesser QBs. But instead 4 of the top 5 QBs this year were in the final four, and only Allen was on a rookie deal.

They went winless after one of the best QBs of all time missed a season to injury?

That says a lot more about the QB than the contract.

mahomes is still on his rookie deal. his extension hasn't kicked in.
allen is on his rookie deal.

half the Qbs in the final 4 were on rookie deals.

rodgers is the 3rd highest paid in the NFL for 2020 (behind wilson and ben) brady is tied for 12th with 3 other QBs (carr, rivers, brees) in average however is cheap this year only counting 21.6 mil (10.61% of the cap)

If we go by actual cap hit in 2020
rodgers is 10th, brady is 3rd, mahomes is 32nd, allen is 30th.

Mahomes's cap hit is low because the Chiefs wanted it to be. We could do something similar with Watson if there's a year that we really want to win. Anyway, I'm not saying that all else equal a cheap QB isn't better. I'm saying that at current QB valuations, a better QB is preferable to a cheaper one.

Half were on rookie deals and all 4 were in the top 5 for QB production this year. Watson is the only guy in the top 5 for QB production that wasn't in a championship game because the Texans have completely mismanaged their roster and coaching. But there are probably 30 or so QBs on rookie deals that weren't in a championship game this year. And championship games for the last 20 years have been played with very few exceptions by the same elite QBs over and over or teams that got there once, but couldn't continue to contend because they don't have an answer for the QB position.

Rodgers cap hit is 10th, but he just signed a contract as the highest paid QB 2 years ago. Watson's current contract doesn't mean that he would consistently be a top 5 cap hit for the Jets.

Lol his post was 100% accurate. You’re going to blame Douglas for what Mike Tannenbaum did? Makes no sense.

it's low because he was given an extension which hasn't kicked in yet. the added years start in 2021. he was drafted in 2017 and signed a 4 year deal like all players picked where he was. that deal was for 17,18,19, and 20. in 2021 he'll count 29mil against the cap which is a bargain for him to be fair. his contract is very backloaded and the bonus was small. 2023 is when he starts costing a lot

teams with elite QBs almost always make the playoffs. save for a few exceptions. the difference in as you said it, is once in the playoffs all teams have elite QBs so it's typically who has the better team around them. which favors the QBs making less typically.

On top of that as you will see next year teams will have to shed talent to stay under the cap. the saints for instance levergaed a lot to make 1 more run. brees took less money and tried to make 1 last run. he'll retire now but the saints will be in cap hell and likely suck for the next 4-5 years regardless

I don't really know how to do it but the league should try to do something to regulate the quarterback contracts against the cap.

A ton of teams want to get out from under these massive contracts yet the market dictates that your hand is forced into paying them (especially after year three) and they have very little maneuverability to do so.

I suggested somewhere that they add an amnesty rule like the NBA did back in 2010. Whether it's one time or rolling on a 4-5 or 10 year basis, the player still gets paid but they get to cut them without it turning into dead cap money.

I doubt the rest of the NFLPA would ever go for a quarterback cap exclusion but it's another idea. If they don't explore ideas to fix it, this off-season in particular could expose an extreme imbalance in the league. It is also something that has already started to slowly impact free agents as their contracts already started to be much lower this past off-season. Obviously the pandemic had a big impact on that, but that will be the case for this one as well.

it's part of parity. the market regulates itself. if teams weren't willing to pay it it wouldn't happen. if they did manesty it would turn into the NBA or MLB and we don't want that. football isn't made to have dynastys. it's made to have any given sunday. the pats were the 1 exception to it and a big part was brady taking less money and really good coaching

yea, so if the only teams that make multiple championship games have elite qbs, who are the highest paid players in the league, and they are able to rework their contracts to retool the team, what is the problem with Watson’s contract?

The other option is hoping to build a team that can consistently contend without an elite qb, which rarely happens, or drafting an elite qb, which happens even less.

It's anti-parity when teams are handcuffed into overpaying for someone whose middle of the pack simply because they have to due to the way the market is.

Hopefully it will correct itself naturally.

Wentz, Goff, Cousins, Brissett, and Garoppolo all accounted for massive chunks of a teams salary cap and are paid in the top 15 in the league. No player at another position makes more than them in the league.

How would a one time amnesty turn it into the NBA? Baseball can't even be compared because it's uncapped.

I didn't say it was a problem. i said it's something that we need to consider and look at.

thats a poor job on their part. overpaying for players = bad team. getting more value for your moey = good team. HC and GM are the one's that are most sucessful. if you look at the good franchises the players constintly change but the HC and GM don't and that's why. if JD and saleh pan out we can be good

History is fluid. There are always new things that happen, and people find new ways to make them happen. The NFL is evolving. Just like you shouldn't pay players just for past production, you shouldn't make decisions solely on historical data. It should definitely be strongly considered, but shouldn't be the determining factor.

Of course, but data is inherently based on past events, thus potential future outcomes as football evolves doesn’t change the facts of what the data tells us about today.
