My perspective having supported neither candidate in this past election: Trump won because of liberal hubris. More and more, liberals take elitism to an extreme, and it's losing them the "common man" vote, once a bedrock of Democratic support. While the media tries to paint Trump as all the worst Republican traits all rolled into one, he couldn't be further from a normal Republican possible. He leveraged Republicans to get himself elected and is now leveraging them for political capital, but he couldn't give a shit about Republican issues. The Repubs control Congress and are beholden to their base in primaries. Many of them would love to remove Trump but they need something bad enough to justify to Trump supporters that he needs to go. Give it a couple years. Or knowing Trump a couple days.
