watson will count over 20% of the cap in 2022 and beyond. that's huge. no team has won with a QB taking up that much of the cap for a reason.
With a few cuts 70m easy and we still have other draft picks. We draft well sign good contracts I dont see any issue thats more than enough money and picks to make a good team.
As I said earlier, even if that is true, that's the cost of sustained contending runs. You'd be hard-pressed to win a SB without that sort of QB (not including outliers such as Nick Foles winning a Superbowl).
division isn't success. the redskins won a division with 7 wins. the dolphins missed the playoffs with 10. the ravens, browns, bucs and colts all won 11 games and made the playoffs but didn't win a divison. rams won 10 but no division and made the playoffs. if your unlucky and have a 15-1 team in your divison and you go 14-2 you still did great and made the playoffs.
it's because you can't build a team when 1 player eats all your cap. the teams that won are teams where the QBs were on rookie deals before they got paid or brady who took way less money then he was worth because he knew that
I knew that, and my comments were no reflection on you. You were just clearly laying out the options as posters have stated them, and weren't trying to make a case for any of them. Why would we really need help in 2023 just because Watson's salary is larger? It's not like we'd be missing a bunch of picks, either. At worst, it would probably only be our 1st round pick, and we could be picking in the mid-to-low 20s by then. We might not even trade the 2023 1st round pick, either. That was just one suggestion. For argument's sake, let's say we trade the #2, our #1 pick in 2022, and our #1 pick in 2023. Let's say that trading for Watson enables us to sign A. Robinson, J. Thuney, and 2-3 defenders (a LB, SS and CB). JD could take an OG like Trey Smith at #23, perhaps take a Kadarius Toney, who is a game-breaker, very fast RAC specialist, or he could trade down for a 2nd and another 3rd and 6th round pick. We trade Sam for a 2nd and a 5th. We'd either have three- 2nd round picks, three-3rd round picks, a 4th round pick, three 5th round picks and two 6th round picks (or something like that) or absolute worst case, we'd have the #23 pick with which to improve the OL, our WR corps, or make even take Pat Freiermuth, or Jaylen Waddle if he drops, then we'd have two 2nd round picks, two 3rd round picks, a 4th round pick, two 5th round picks and a 6th round pick. So worst case, we'd still have 8-9 draft picks this year as well as the cap room to sign probably 4-5 players. Then next year, we'd still have 8 picks, and would have 6 picks in 2023. JD could also trade down with our 2nd round pick this year or the 1st round pick we're left with next year or the 2nd round pick and get additional picks. In that scenario, we'd already have added at least 21 new players by 2023, and would still have 6 draft picks that year with which to upgrade the team. I agree that JD is not going to get raped on the deal. He will get a fair deal or he won't make the trade. He definitely has his work cut out for him, but I believe that he is the right man, and can and will get it done.
I just looked into it - it's not a Gary Veynerchuk hoodie, it's a Rally hoodie. Rally is a sports collectibles trading market site that Vaynerchuk is a participant in, or outright invested in (I can't tell at quick glance), but it isn't like he's rocking direct VaynerX (Gary's company) gear. Vaynerchuk has been a huge proponent of the sport collectibles (cards especially) market.
15 of the last 18 super bowls will be won by elite QBs after this year. This is about as bad as your argument that Dak is better than Watson.
You can, you just need to able to draft properly and sign the right players. I feel like oftentimes, teams forget that and just rely on their elite QB. You need an elite QB and a team to win. Jets are in possible position to do both.
Nonsense. Nothing makes up for not having an elite QB. You don't understand the game or you wouldn't make a ridiculous statement like that. An efficient QB might get you into the playoffs as a wildcard. If that's your goal, please GTFO because that is way too low a bar.
Thank you. The posts trying to claim the opposite are laughable and show how little those posters know about the game of football. They're an insult to the rest of our intelligence.
2020 mahomes (rookie contract) 2019 brady (took less money) 2018 foles (back-up Qb, wentz was on rookie deal) 2017 brady (took less money) 2016 peyton manning (was old and played bad and wasn't paid much as he was chasing a SB) 2015 brady (took less money) 2014 wilson (rookie contract) 2013 flacco (rookie contract) 2012 eli manning (restructured his contract was only paid 11 mil to make room for better players around him) 2011 aaron rodgers (rookie contract) of the last 10 SB winners only brady and mahomes were elite for the time. wilson and rodgers played great but weren't really considered elite at the time. all of them were not close to top paid. show me when a team won a SB with a Qb eating 20% of their cap ever. i'll be waiting
And we're saying that even if true, it doesn't matter, lol. Teams aren't going to be like, "oh, that elite QB we have hasn't won a superbowl yet during his rookie contract, and we have to pay him big bucks now, time to get rid of him and start over." That doesn't happen, my dude. I mean, come on, lol. Watson + a good build team around him equals sustained contending runs for at least 8-10 years.
I agree, it's just rare that you see a top tier QB in a situation with a great coach and strong roster. DeShaun is young so it's quite favorable in the long term aspect if the roster and coaching staff can remain solid as well. If Joe D is a great GM as we hope him to be, then he should be able to make it work. Don't get me wrong, I love Watson and would love for him to come here. If Joe Douglas feels that he can continue to build-up the franchise while managing the cap hit from Watson, then I'll support that endeavor. And I think Joe Douglas has that advantage now that he hired Robert Saleh. A coach that players around the league love and would play for.
of course they won't but nobody has had success paying out a QB that much. that's the point. it seems the best way to win a SB is with a cheap QB who outlays his contract and a solid all around team.
The question wasn't related to salary, it was whether or not you need elite production from your QB for sustained success. You do. Aaron Rodgers threw for 45 TDs in 2011 and wasn't on his rookie deal, not sure what you're talking about.
Toney is the best second level wd out in the draft, He is a game-changer. I think Miami takes him with Houstons pick in the scond
