Disagree. It'd probably be in our best interest to agree to a trade for Watson ASAP, if you assume him being our QB will attract key FA's like Allen Robinson. If I'm not mistaken, trades can't be official until the new league year starts in March, but they can be agreed upon prior? I think the Alex Smith to Washington trade from a few years ago was agreed upon early. Though, I wonder, if the Jets and Texans had a reported agreement prior, what's stopping another team (that Watson approves) from topping the deal at the eleventh hour?
Alex Smith trade was agreed upon on Jan 30. Teams could renege on a deal but that gives you a bad reputation.
Well, hey, what do the Texans have to lose at this point? Also another follow up thought on needing to get a trade done prior to the draft. Need to have the QB position settled before the draft, unless JD's plans are limited to Watson or Darnold, with no consideration to drafting a QB.
I believe the trade could be finalized upon the commencement of the league year on March 17th so that would give us roughly a month and a half to finalize the plan. Also - I believe if we retain 23, that would be a good spot to trade down and recoup some draft capital. I don't see a massive drop off in talent from 23 to say 35-40 depending on which players fall (Harris, Waddle namely). And I don't believe we'll be taking a runningback that high because the system will be friendly for middle tier runningbacks to succeed. Harris can work in an outside zone running scheme but I don't believe it'd be an ideal use of his talents.
We absolutely have the pieces and CAP to get this done. Key fact here is that we own #2 overall, people shouldn't just treat this like just any old 1st round pick. This is almost as good as it gets from a draft pick value standpoint

there's always teams looking to jump back into the late 1st round for a QB or a "missing piece." The standard price often includes next year's 1st rounder, which is quite inticing
It depends on how far we jump down. The Patriots and Ravens do this all the time. But for reference the Ravens trades from 52 along with a 4th rounder to 32, for that years 2nd and a future 4th and 2nd. Not quite sure we'll get a fourth, but a future second and third or fourth would be cool. Could be more if a team is dying to get Trask or Jones. Looking at Atlanta, Carolina, Detroit, Denver, and maybe even the 49ers.
I know the #2 pick can be worth multiple firsts from pick 20 on. But I don't see anyone giving up that much for Fields/Wilson this draft. Maybe someone in the teens will for a single 1st and some change.
Schefter also said he expects him to force a trade and that he won't play for the Texans again. I'll wait until I actually see the clip, but the initial internet game of telephone read makes it sound like the Jets are back to SOJ status in the pecking order.
The combo of Schefter saying "I think he's played his last game as a Texan" and "I wouldn't get my hopes up" about him being a Jet... not great.
Tbh, nobody knows what's going on with the Jets. Our entire Jets beat doesn't know anything, I don't think Schefter knows either.
