That article is priceless. When all is said and done, receiving a 4th round pick for Herm will go down as one of the greatest thefts in history (to our benefit). Lack of aggressiveness, miscommunication, poor preparation...it is identical to his term with the Jets. The fact that the KC media is lambasting him after one game is amazing given the derrier-smooching he received from what is perceived to be the toughest media market in the country.
Can we back up just a half-a-step and recognize that the Bengals' thug mentality led to a cheap shot on Trent Green mid-slide, which may not have been the cause, but certainly contributed to the Chiefs' loss.
Being optimistic, he's not a head coach. He's good with players and people, he's not a good in-game coach. He could be a defensive coordinator in the NFL.
The really unfortunate thing for KC is, they're stuck with this guy for quite a while. This is only the beginning and they only got a glimpse of how poorly prepared the team was, entering this game. Wait until it becomes glaringly apparent the guy lacks even the most basic of skills in clock management. And they only got a sampling yesterday of how he uses conservative play-calling to prevent losing, a technique that works occasionally but is usually a recipe for disaster in most games. The fan base is going to really go ballistic when they finally realize the magnitude of what the hell the FO has done in hiring this guy.
One of the big things I noticed in our game was how we went for TDs on offense instead of playing for the FG. Both times Chad threw TD passes, I was surprised to see him throwing for the end zone. Almost by habit I was thinking FG first, forgetting that you're supposed to try for the TD first.
That's right, no flag on the play. "Cheap shot" may be going too far, but Green was going into one of those fairy quarterback slides, and Geathers put his head down and laid-into him. I wouldn't be surprised to see a fine, considering how we pamper quarterbacks these days.
It was right on the bubble. Green had not quite gone into his slide. He was technically still up for the taking. No one wants to see anyone get hurt seriously, even on Herm's team................
The real problem Herm has in KC is that he's not following a tough disciplinarian the way he did in NY with Parcells/Groh. This means that the players have no buy in to him at all. If anything he is a weaker version of Vermeil and they'll pick up on that fast. If you're going to have a coach who is the good humor fairy as his primary attribute it really helps if the players give a rat's ass about that quality. By midseason you will have vets in that lockerroom asking for a sterner taskmaster to get "the other guys" playing harder.
I have to admit to scoreboard watching and highlight watching the Chiefs...to justify all of my bellowing about Herm Edwards during his tenure as Head Coach of the NY Jets. All preseason the Media has been kissing Herm's ass - saying he'd be the most successful first year/new team HC. Why does it take a second look for some people to get it? He's doing exactly to the Chiefs and their poor fans what he did to us - only it will be worse, because they have missed their window of opportunity, and he had his here and couldn't deliver. You play to ?????????????????? lack of communications, I'm not sure what you play to do?????????????????
And to think. I was Bitching that all we got was a 4th for Herm. Hey, I was a Herm supporter until the final Year when he was simply defensless. The "NO Balls" style of coaching just wore me out
And I can tell you is that Herm is seriously looking at 0-2 this Sunday, just like we are seriously looking at 1-1. KC plays Denver @ Mile High, with Denver coming off a pitiful performance vs. the Rams. Shannahan will have no sympathy for Herm and his cronies. If you're in a knock-out league, Denver will be a guaranteed winner.
