I agree but I think sproles was far quicker and far more elusive. this kid was a really great college player, I don't see him being a great pro. but he has the pedigree and knows what kind of work is necessary so I am willing to come back in 3 years and say I was wrong. hes not a sure miss but im not a huge fan.

Why are you so high on getting a TE?
Neither of Jets QBs are equipped to make quick reads to TE with crappy OL they have. I know you believe he is potentially a generational type guy, but that's only comes true is there is someone to consistently connect with him, and I don't see Jets having that for the next several years.

Pass only because RB or WR isn't a huge need (And if we need a WR it's not Mccaffrey's type now that we lost Marshall). Fournette may be enough of a talent to justify taking, but spending a 1st on a RB elswhere isn't the right move.

I'm all for trading down, but I think it should mean going OL, TE, etc...

I would not take him anywere in the 1st round. Personally, let the Pats take him, I would rather pickup Curtis Samuel from OSU.....

We need a top player at every position BPA AT 6 unless it's D line .Trading back would be a disaster with our draft history.

I don't look at the draft to fix this year, i look at it as adding talent for the next 5 years. this guy would help every facet of the offense and give young qbs a safety blanket as they develop. he will always be open, too big for safeties and too fast for lbs.
This we don't have a qb so why bother drafting a good skill player does not make sense to me

Cook did not test well at the combine and despite not doing well in the vertical jump (which doesn't really matter) Leonard Fournette ran a 4.5 40 yard dash at 240 lbs.

I prefer Leonard at 6 because I really think he's that much of a difference maker but I also think that McCaffrey made himself a lot of money the way he performed at the combine. IMO, he is the best catch passing RB in the entire class, and can play a multitude of positions. In the passing game he can be lethal.

I would love either or at this point, because I think both Fournette and McCaffrey are game changers in their own ways.

As for Mixon, he is probably a top 2 or 3 RB in this class. It is always more damning when there is video of the incident versus spoken word. Like it or not, and just like Mike Mayock said, some team is going to draft him and they will have to deal with the social backlash of it but there is not denying the dude can ball out. His tape is very similar to Leveon Bell....very patient, great vision, and has a nice amount of burst.

I'm all for skill players, but IMO protecting QB is more important than the safety blanket and so OL > TE.
But I see your point. A quick pass to an uncoverable TE can be protection too.

Idk, maybe I'm just not used to the idea that TE and Jets can be mixed in the same sentence.

if there was a tackle i thought would be as dominant as i think howard could be i would be all over it but there is not. howard can block too so he will help in pass pro also. he would improve our entire offense.

People will continue to bash you cause taking a TE [or guard] this high is outrageous. Many said the same when certain fans here wanted Tyler Eifert early in the draft a while back. It was all about not taking a TE high cause positional value, etc, etc ... I'd take him at 6, cause I don't think you can trade down and try and select him. That's playing with fire, cause I can easily see the Bills taking him at 10. I thought he was very overrated 2 years ago, but this year with the title game and combine, he showed me a lot.

To begin with, I totally disagree with you that the Jets don't have a QB who are equipped to make quick reads to the TE. Second, a TE who can block would not only help that "crappy OL" in pass protection and the rushing attack, but would make the offense less predictable. IMO one of the main reasons the Jets' offense has had such little success over the last two years is that their attack has been so predictable. Defenses haven't had to worry about the Jets TEs catching a pass. I may be mistaken but think someone posted that when Forte was on the field, most often it was a run, and when Powell was on the field, most often it was a pass, or maybe it was vice versa.

Its ok, they can bash. but taking a lesser player at a perceived more valuable position just does not make sense to me.
his combine convinced me we can't move down and take him also.

Jets offense had great success 2 years ago, no success last year. Each year they had zero production out of the TE position. The difference was first year Fitz had a career year as well as great production from Marshall and Decker while last year Fitz reverted back to form while Marshall had his head in the clouds all year and Decker got hurt.

With that said I'm fully on board with Howard at 6(if they don't love a QB) because he just may be the best player on offense in the entire draft. Ideally I'd like to see them trade down and select him but that can't be counted on.

The thing is, this draft is NOT the one to go heavy with OL. It's just not a good draft for OL. The strengths of this draft are at TE, CB, RB, pass rushers and DL. There is also some real quality and some depth at S. We don't need DL at all. We have need at each of the other positions listed and at QB, LT, and C. I think that Mac will either sign a FA C or draft one to compete with Wesley Johnson. The Center position can be upgraded, but Johnson did pretty darn well last season. Even though both positions could be upgraded, Mac is not drafting an OG high, not only because he just re-signed Winters and has Carpenter, but he doesn't believe in taking interior OL high in the draft. I think he will either sign a FA OG, maybe two, or sign one and draft one to upgrade the depth at C. I think the Jets are pretty high on Shell at RT, but Mac may sign or draft a RT to compete with Shell and Qvale.

Protecting the QB is more important than TE, but unfortunately, this just isn't the draft for LTs. If the Jets trade down in the first or get very lucky in the 2nd round, they could possibly get Ramczyk or Bolles, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Even if they did, I'm not sure that either would start from day one this season, and even if they did, I'm not sure either would be that good. They're just the best two in a sorry draft for LTs.

Yes, a quick pass to an uncoverable TE can be protection. I think you're correct with your last sentence. You're just not used to the Jets having a good TE, or the Jets offense using one. But it could very well be that the offense didn't utilize one very much, because we didn't have one worth using, and the Jets had so many other needs that they were forced to ignore it. Now, with a different offensive system, I think it is a must, because it is with most offensive systems.

If the Jets are able to trade down and still get Howard, I would think that it would be no lower than #8 or #9, but you may be correct that they may have to stay put at #6 in order to get him. The Panthers are set at TE, so I don't think they'd take Howard, but I could be wrong. The Chargers still have Antonio Gates, but he's 36. They also took Hunter Henry last season, and also have Sean McGrath, Jake McGee, Asante Cleveland and the immortal Jeff Cumberland, so they obviously value the position. I imagine that some of those TEs are futures contracts players, like a couple of the Jets TEs who are at the bottom of the roster. Unless they're really high on Henry or some of the other TEs, I could see them taking Howard. Other than Dwight Lowery, I don't recognize any of their safety's names, so they may be looking for safety and would take Hooker or Adams if either is there but it could be risky.

Yes, they were much more successful two years ago, but I think they were still limited at times because they didn't have the TE and they were predictable. Offenses fare better when opposing Ds have to cover the whole field and have to try at least to cover every different offensive play-making position. When they don't have to worry about the TE position, it makes things a lot easier on them. They can focus on covering the RBs and WRs, and ignore the TEs.

    That's fair.
Now, that'd mean you don't want Jets to trade out of 6, right?

Perhaps a better statement on my part would've been "the jury is still out" on whether our QBs can make a quick read. Plus, to strengthen your point, a good route running by TE will mean there is no need for too much reading - just be ready to toss the skin into a pre-determined window on a quick route. So my point about "no QC who can read" might be irrelevant in addition to being incorrect.
