Paul Schreiber is horrible. Second base umpire in San Diego. Eric Byrnes was clearly just thrown out at second on a pitchout and the blind umpire called him safe. The play wasn't even that close. The next guy did ground out, though. That call could've cost San Diego the game. They need 4-3 right now.
Why the hell did the Giants send Randy Johnson out on 3 days rest? They're like 8 games back, it's June, and he's 45 and coming off a minor shoulder injury. It makes absolutely no sense.
^ I don't get it either. Adrian Gonzalez getting intentionally walked a lot because he has no protection in the order. Jon Garland isn't too good at this, though. First two pitches were either on the outside corner or just off it and Snyder had to make two diving stops. The ump automatically called balls but they might've been strikes.
So after the intentional walk to Gonzalez, it's first and second with two outs for Kouzmanoff. He hits a drive to the gap in left-center. It stays up there long enough for Byrnes to get to it, but he flat out whiffed on the ball and then went tumbling to the warning track. Byrnes is good at making a fool out of himself in the field. Second time this game he went tumbling head over heels and didn't even touch the ball. This guy is making eight figures a year and he can't hit or field. Oh yeah, and he's blocking the progress of prospects.
Teams catching on in June. Gonzalez has at least two walks in all eight games he's played in June so far. That's incredible. 2,3,2,2,2,2,3,2 He walks more than anyone. Three walks more than second place Adam Dunn, the notorious walk machine stuck in Washington. So far tonight, A-Gone has one walk and we're in the third. His career high is 74 walks last season. He should double that this season if he stays healthy.
For the park he plays in, the numbers A-Gone is putting up is nothing short of astounding. What an AWFUL trade by the rangers getting rid of him and chris young for adam eaton and akinori otsuka. EW.
^ yep over/under for Texas/Toronto was 10. 1-0 Texas win that featured only 11 hits. Millwood dominant again, going 7.2, allowing 5 hits and no walks. He's 6-4 with a 2.72 ERA.
.272 OBP last season. .256 OBP this season. And he's starting and batting second. This is worse than when they had Chris Young leading off. New manager, same style of placing low OBP guys at the top.
Speaking of Chris Young.... Yeah, you're wrong. He turns 26 this season. His OBP numbers? 2007: 148 games, .295 OBP 2008: 160 games, .315 OBP 2009: 62 games, .251 OBP Notice a pattern?
Beckett and Buehrle both homered today. That was Buehrle's first career home run and his second career RBI. It was an important run, too, as the White Sox ended up winning 5-4. Buehrle did not get the win, though. Career batting stats for Buehrle entering today: 3/36, one walk, 20 strikeouts, 1 RBI, zero extra base hits. .083 BA, .108 OBP, .083 SLG. Beckett has considerably more MLB experience at the plate, mostly due to his years with the Marlins. Third career homer. .147 BA, 2 HR, 15 RBI in 211 ABs before today.
CLEVELAND -- Cliff Lee threw seven innings of no-hit ball before settling for a three-hitter to give the Cleveland Indians a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. Lee (4-6) allowed only two first-inning walks until Yadier Molina opened the eighth with an opposite-field drive down the right-field line that hit off the wall for a double. That broke a string of 20 in a row set down by the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, who was bidding for the first no-hitter at Progressive Field and first by a Cleveland pitcher since Len Barker's perfect game against Toronto on May 15, 1981. "Whatever man," Lee said. "They didn't score any runs, that's the ultimate goal."
Epic fail for the Indians bullpen. Top of the 8th, they're up 12-8. Rivera walked. Counsell walked, Rivera to second. Matt Herges relieved Luis Vizcaino. McGehee walked, Rivera to third, Counsell to second. So they walk the bases loaded for Braun, who singles. Now Fielder has the bases loaded.
and as I actually expected, Fielder hits a grand slam. 13-12 Brewers. Nice job, inept fools. The Indians were up 8-3 after 4 and 12-7 after 6 and now it looks like they're going to lose.
WOW! John Lackey was 0/28, but he just had a great at bat against Zito. 1-2, fouling off pitches, taking two balls, and then singling hard into centerfield, netting him his first RBI as well as his first hit. After a fly out by Figgins, Aybar hit his second homer of the season. 7-0 Angels. Zito has been chased in the 4th. Not only is Lackey throwing well for the first time this season, he helped chase Zito. 6 run 4th for the Angels and it ain't over yet.
Abreu greets Justin Miller with a homer, and the Angels go back to back. Abreu is even fatter than he was with the Yankees, btw. 8-0 and the Angels are rolling.
