Because the previous two years, when healthy, he had combined for 42 pressures and 18.5 sacks Last year, as you mentioned, he was facing a sports hernia and played very limited snaps throughout the year. Including missing games, again as you stated. So I would call last year a fluke and the result of a guy continuing to play with an injury
You can call it a peak or a guy that was just finding his rhythm prior to injuring himself last year. Again, he's not worth $20 million. But I sure as shit would pay him a significant amount to be on this roster. It's not just the numbers and sacks, it's the constant disruption he creates in the backfield. Allows our corners and safeties to thrive when there's a consistent pressure, even if he doesn't get to the QB.
He played in 13 regular season games last year played in two (both) playoff games. He did not miss 5 games last year; he only missed 3.
its also weak to continue to harp on Clowney's 3 sacks last year. Clowney played 2 games in something called "the playoffs," a foreign concept to us Jets fans by now, I know. And in these mysterious "playoff games" he had 2 sacks in 2 games. Those figures aren't included though when people want to bash him for his production he was the single best defensive player on field for both teams in those 2 playoff games by the way
They also will not tell you, how outside of his rookie season that he's played in a combined (including 5 playoff games)... 76 out of a possible 85 games. Has played 89.4% of his games since his rookie year injury. Complete tools. They lie every time they tell us that he's injury prone or "often injured" because almost 90% says completely otherwise.
Must be nice to have Russell Wilson kick and drag your ass to the playoffs so you can finally perform Using the AV stat (appropriate value) he had a groundbreaking season where he had a value of 6. Did we see his peak? Its def possible. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/ClowJa00.htm
the vast majority of deals are only two year deals with team options thereafter ... i dont see clowney getting three years of guarantees at this point
Yea. Right. He "stinks" so bad but yet Miami Dolphins offered him $17,000,000 per year and last year's Seattle franchise has already made an offer of $17.M per year (which still stands on the table as of right now). Cluelessness @ it's finest.
Only clueless tools look @ sack numbers while completely ignoring all around play and all around impact from an OLB/DE. ~ Only 27 years of age. ~ 6'5 / 255 lbs. ~ USA Today Hight School All-American (2010). ~ 2x First-team All-American. ~ 2x First-team All-SEC. ~ SEC Defensive Player of the Year. ~ 1st overall draft pick (2014). ~ Second-team All-Pro (2016). ~ 3x Pro Bowler (2016-2018). ~(including playoffs) ~ 256 tackles (186 solo). ~ 85 Quarterback hits. ~ 75 tackles for loss behind the L.O.S. ~ 33 1/2 sacks. ~ 16 pass deflections. ~ 9 Fumbles Forced. ~ 7 Fumble recoveries. ~ 4 Defensive Touchdowns. ~ 2 Interceptions. ~ Has played in 90% of games since his (R) injury. He's impacted on every level from H.S football / NCAA / NFL etc and has awards on his wall all while people from their bedrooms harp all his "sack numbers" while ignoring everything else. You do not have to be a great pass rusher, to be a great (overall) OLB/DE; which is exactly what Jadeveon Clowney is.
Clowney is a good, maybe very good, edge defender. He absolutely blows people up in the run game, unquestionably he's a top tier run defender, but the Jets had one of the best run D's in the league without CJ last year. I'm not sure adding Clowney would bring that much improvement because there isn't too far to go for the Jets. He would be the best pass rusher the Jets have, but Clowney is not an elite or top tier pass rusher by any means. He might be better in Greg's D and produce a bit more in that role or he might not. Anyone suggesting that he would bring a massive improvement is projecting something there just isn't much evidence for. The Jets don't really need a great edge rusher, though I'm sure we would all take one, what the Jets need is an improved pass rush capability, particularly in obvious passing situations. Given the multitude of pressing needs the Jets had this off season I think the pass rusher was the least pressing. So if, this year, that is addressed by a decent situational guy then so be it. I just don't think it makes a lot of sense to pursue a guy whose strength is the run game and who may not improve the pass rush that significantly. Not this year at least.
What are you talking about? You return two beastly IMLB's against the run in C.J Mosley/Avery Williamson and a great edge setting and run stopping machine in Jadeveon Clowney and Gregg Williams could feature the greatest run defense of All-Time (and with improved CB play, forget about it; instant contenders).
He is not a GREAT pass rusher, but he is a GREAT guy to have on the outside, especially against the run. Clowney is not known around the league for sacks. He does not make the same impact as a guy like JJ Watt. But he makes an enormous impact stopping the run and providing pressure to opposing QB's. Is he worth $20m? No. But he is worth a good amount of money, just not sure what that number should be
