Mariano hurts right knee shagging balls during BP, is carted off the field http://www.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120503&content_id=30328258&vkey=news_nyy&c_id=nyy Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was carted off the field at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday after appearing to suffer a right knee injury shagging fly balls during batting practice. The Yankees were hitting on the diamond just after 7 p.m. ET as Rivera received attention in the outfield, with manager Joe Girardi among those watching the all-time saves leader be propped onto the back of a flatbed truck and driven around the warning track. Head athletic trainer Steve Donohue was riding with Rivera, who was gingerly helped into the clubhouse and did not appear able to put pressure on his injured leg. No further information was immediately available about Rivera's injury. Rivera regularly shags fly balls in center field during batting practice and has spoken about hoping to play the position in a game before he retires.
According to Girardi an MRI was given during the game and Mariano was examined by the Royal's doctor and the preliminary diagnosis appears to be a torn ACL. Rivera to be sent back to NY to be examined by Yankee doctors.
Just the Royals, and just the fourth, but so far Hughes looks like he's been building on his previous start. Velocity sitting a tick or two higher again. A bit of an easier time putting people away. ETA: Throwing quite a few changeups today, too.
Jeter has had an awesome start to the year. Hopefully he keeps it up as Cano and ARod get their swing in form. Is Rivera done for 2012?
http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2012/05/yankees_joe_girardi_doubtful_t.html KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Although Yankees closer Mariano Rivera would not rule out pitching in 2012, estimating a recovery time of 3-5 months, manager Joe Girardi said it would be “doubtful” that the closer would make an appearance this season. “I know (Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo) did it, I think his happened on May 1 and he came back and made one start and pitched in the playoffs,” Girardi said. “But you worry about the strength and the stability of the leg, it’s a big part of pitching and it would be a concern.” Gallardo was 22 when the injury happened. When asked if age was a factor with the 42-year-old Rivera — a notion a few surgeons have said shouldn’t matter that much — Girardi said it was possible. “Well, I didn’t want to say it,” Girardi said. “Sometimes younger people heal quicker, but you never know; but my thought is we probably aren’t going to have him.”

Per MLBTR -- Scout: Andy Pettitte "does not look close to ready" and may need several more minor league starts before he's ready to return to the Yankees
